I know Tony Craig has triggered another year here. Sadly.
Rodman has another year plus an option for another.

I hope we can get these consensual 5 key signings on free transfers, otherwise it's back to loaning U23 players from Prem and Championship. Also, people, please stop hoping for 15 players to leave every season just because you didn't like them. It's like you never learn. There is nothing wrong with loan signings, as long as you get the right ones! Just look at the impact Wilson and Mount have made at Derby this season. I realise that Rovers would never be able to get players of that quality, but there must be loan players available that can have a similar impact in Div 1. Look at the impact Mallik Wilks had at Doncaster on loan from Leeds. 14 goals and 8 assists. They have used the loan system to great effect this season with the likes of Herbie Kane and Paul Downing etc.

I know he's more marmite than Lines but close to player of the year for me. To lose both our centre halves would be very risky given that we had the 5th best defensive record in the division this season.

My worry is though that when you get to Craig's age, some times they come back after summer & they've completely lost it. Hopefully TC has another year left in him

If so I wonder if Craig will look to take up some coaching in addition to playing?

Was unsure about TC when he first arrived, felt he didn't offer us anything better than Broadbent as he lacked the ability to bring the ball out from the back, didn't seem to be able to jump and was similar height and build to Locks which I thought would weaken what was already a shaky defence from the season before.
However over the course of the season have to say that he's proved me wrong.
I've come to see how tough he is, he's always prepared to put his body on the line and he's a wily old fox of a defender who knows all the best tricks in the book! Like locks what he lacks in physicality he makes up for in his reading of the game.
Got to say he's earnt my respect and given Locks is now off I really hope he sticks around to provide continuity in the back line.

He's a master of the dark arts and his presence made a better defender if Lockyer. Hopefully he can do the same for Kilgore. And given that he played more games than anyone else this season, I would suggest he's got at least one more season in him.

Agree with all those positive TC attributes but my only concern with him is his lack of pace and the affect it has on the shape of the team. I think he's worried about getting caught with a ball behind and therefore likes to drop the back four deep. This in turn stretches us with gaps between the back four and midfield but more importantly sees our strikers isolated.

If people don’t realise more needs to go than stay then their deluded
I would rather get rid of the players stated previously by posters and sign other players on free transfers and loans than keep the likes of upson/Payne/smith/Nichols We will go down next season if we don’t...the teams coming up have better squads than us like bury/Lincoln etc so it will be relegation battling all season and horrible to watch

Plus it's looking likely they'll go into Admin this summer in any event. I'm not Upson's biggest fan but he played in a team which is top 8 on current form. I doubt we'll see either Payne or Smith in a Rovers shirt again and, like Payne, Nichols is probably under contract next season so it's not a case of just releasing him.

All teams will change and add players. Two years ago Bury were signing everyone who moved and they ended up being relegated by December and had an awful season. And with their financial problems they might not be as good as this season. And it’s impossible to say what others will be like. I suspect we’ll be better than some and not so good as others but who knows. We’ll get rid of 5/6/7 and sign 3/4 or something like that! 😉 UTG!

Aren't Bury facing a winding up order due to their poor transfer activity during their last stint in league one?
It's all good saying we need to go after player X,Y and Z but let's not forget that there's more factors that play into a transfer than simply offering a player a good contract.

Anyone know when the club plan to publish the official released list. Thought GC was dealing with this on Monday? Guess more discussions with some before confirmed?

Last season it was May 3rd, season before April 28th. Can only assume 'soon' (i.e end of this week/start of next) given previous ways of working.

What made Rovers get to where we are right now (mostly) was sticking to a team and betting more on cohesion than individual quality. The roster in our first recent L1 season was virtually the same as the one which faced Grimsby at the Conference, give or take a few modifications. Losing key men like Bodin and Taylor and being unable to replace them was what crippled us.
But sure, release everyone and keep 6 players. That'll show 'em.
John Ward sure seemed to agree with this philosophy. Wonder what happened that season.

One of our greatest failures in our time in League One under Trolls was that we destroyed the nucleus of that promotion side too quickly and failed to replace them properly. I'm not so sure that is what is going on here though. It has been a gradual evolution of the squad this time compared to a massive overhaul. Don't forget that this is going to be our 4th season in League One come August and so it makes sense that not much of the promotion team has survived. The thing that has concerned me slightly over the last few windows has been the losses of character within our squad. For example, I was never the biggest Ellis Harrison fan but there is no denying that he was a big fixture within the personality of our dressing room. Refreshing the squad isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's what you replace them with that can be damaging.

Absolutely, I agree with you; refreshing the squad is part of the game and isn't necessarily bad. What concerns me is the seemingly random and/or impulsive releasing of players. People hated Taylor for a good while during the Conference season and called for his release constantly, and while I do understand where the frustration came from, giving him more and more time only bettered him. And that's just an example off the top of my head, I'm sure there's more.
I think it's important we pinpoint which areas are in dire need of improvement first, and then sort out whatever areas we have personal/minor issues with.

But who out of the released players would you have kept? Slocombe wanted out a year ago because he was homesick. Makes sense for him to leave. Smith I guess you could make a shout for, but I imagine he was on decent money for a back-up League One Keeper. Leadbitter Regardless of whether or not you think he's a League One player, has spent more time on the treatment table the last couple of seasons than in the squad. Lines Again regardless of whether or not he's still got it, you can't keep him if he's fallen out with the manager. That just invites a toxic atmosphere in the long run. Sinclair Again another you could make a shout for, but with 3 DMs in front of him and the likes of Russe wanting to push on, where was the space for him.

I would've kept Smith just because we have no keeper as of now (apart from Andre Jr.) and there's no guarantee that Bonham is coming back to us. I'm mostly referring to the mentality in here, particularly those who wish the list was even bigger than it is.
