I’ve always thought perhaps we could re-train his position to a wide man or attacking midfielder as he can’t score. 100% agree, got to be the way forward for Tom

Nichols does a job for us so maybe this season he will score more ~ he is a good footballer so we should just see how things pan out under a new team structure and manager ~ he scored before he joined us so maybe it's about our style of play and how he is asked to play ?

I know Tom isn’t the most popular player on the terraces and imo is unfairly made a scapegoat on the forums at times, but I honestly believe he is one of if not the most technically gifted players at the club. I do understand why some don’t rate him because as a striker who came to the club with a high transfer fee attached (by Bristol Rovers standards) people expected goals. I see him more as a creative player and I don’t think he has always been utilised to his strengths either by the role he has been asked to do, or by the way the team has been set up to play. If what GC has stated in terms of how he wants Rovers to play this season is correct I can see Tom having more of an impact this season. He has already had 2 seasons here to prove himself so this will be his last chance, which I’m hopeful he will take

Anyone know if he scores in training games? If he doesn't then a waste of time selecting him. If he does is is it nerves on the day perhaps?

I reckon, in all seriousness, he will score 15+ this season. It will be just the way it has gone with our transfers recently where he hits his peak towards the end of his contract and then leaves for nowt. If he has got 10+ by Christmas maybe we’ll accept 200k in January from a team at the top of the league. Unless Coughlan is unable to bring in another decent striker to play alongside JCH, I'd be surprised if TN even started 10+ games by Christmas.

No doubt he has ability but imo he's not a natural striker. It's not a case of him missing bucket loads of chances it's more a case of him not being in the place to convert the ones we do make. To me he doesn't seem to have that instinct of where the ball will drop that the better forwards seem to have. If we're keeping him as an out & out striker it would be a no from me but if we're looking at him as more of a winger /creative player then he's worth persevering with.

He was never a striker at any of the clubs he’s been at other than here. He played left of a front 3 at Exeter where he scored quite a few. He definitely played as a striker at both Exeter and Peterborough.

He definitely played as a striker at both Exeter and Peterborough. Was that his natural position to start with though, or was him playing striker to fill in for injuries? Also to that point, if so how was his goal scoring when asked to play as a striker? Maybe our scouts looked him up from goal scoring stats but playing in a CAM as has been mooted (I also agree perhaps it's the playing style he's been asked of here) but attended a match he played up front. Might not of got a goal but wrote it off as a bad match and we've then bought him in on the assumption he's a goal scoring striker? Food for thought! I've been unimpressed with him as well, but I'd love him to come good and prove me, and everyone wrong!

Sorry but he's hopeless. Loan him out to anyone willing to cover some of his wages.

Clarke brought him in as the "new" Taylor. what we got was someone who goes down easily, someone who is easily pushed off the ball; someone who is not just good enough. you can say play him wide, has he got a cross? No and we have seen how weak his shots are. If he is so good why isn't he at Walsall? £355k to get him here and his worth is now £0. I did say he was on a 3 year deal when he arrived AND he is one of the higher earners at the club.

Someone says that every year, and he doesn't. Just 2 league goals in 2 seasons from open play. How long we have already kept him is mind boggling. Thanks clarke

In his time there he would sometimes play as a lone striker and at other times he would partner the likes of Clinton Morrison, Jayden Stockley or Graham Cummins.

Regardless DC's no fool so he's not going to take a chance again on TN, although we've no idea if DC hasn't already offered to take him off our hands. If GC does sign a marquee striker then TN should be good enough as back up No 10 or playing in the hole, assuming that he doesn't decide to seek 1st team elsewhere.

He went on loan to Bath City and I watched him play for them as a striker and that was in 2012.

I think he’ll score first game of the season, then continue to bang em in, on a regular basis, then we’ll sale him for £350.000 to city. UTG

Most creative player at the club. By creative you mean 2 goals in 2 seasons yeah?
