I've got them to win the league, if not, definitely top two. Clarke was the best defender in the league for the past two seasons and is a big loss, but they still have enough to get in the automatic places in my opinion. No doubt a good signing but tbh I wonder why they bought Ellis in the first place. I doubt if they would have signed him if they had got Marquis first. UTG! I was thinking the same. They have been playing 4-2-3-1 with Ellis the sole striker but he hasn't scored in pre-season and now they have just rumoured to have spent close to £2m on quite a similar player, it makes you wonder how many starts Ellis will get.

Do you know what, the same thing crossed my mind. Have they lost a bit of faith in what they have seen from Ellis so far and decided they need somebody else as their no1 striker.

I’d take Ellis back on loan.

John Marquis to Pompey is a good signing. It is understood the fee is close to £2million. Holy F##k £2m between 2 league 1 teams.... the world has gone mad

Lincoln City close to signing Tyler Walker on loan, another club doing good business. Walker along with Jorge Grant and Jack Payne will see them pushing for the playoffs imo.

If they are spending more than us it probably means they have an ambitious owner gambling on Championship football in the next couple of years. May work out for them, may not.

They averaged more than us last season. 9,005. We will have to just put up with our ground, lack of training facilities, not being able to compete for players and just hoping for survival under the current ownership unfortunately.

Yeah but we're the new Crazy Gang so that's something to be proud about, right?

True but the difference is they have had some very good cup runs and earned enough from them to fund a new training ground I think. Plus they have built on their upward impetus whereas ours stalled a few years ago. Seeing how they get on in L1 will be an interesting comparison with us. And, I really think a one-club city like Lincoln does make it easier for a club. In a two-club city esp for the smaller club it becomes harder imo. And having local owners who have an emotional attachment is different from owners who don’t have that attachment and come from overseas. UTG!

I doubt we can compete with Lincoln for players sadly. Well he said in his match preview that he’s not finished on the business front, still wants more pace, flair and physicality in the squad. As long as they don’t command a fee and don’t want much in terms of wages then we’re in with a shout of getting them.

Another good signing for Oxford.
22-year-old 6ft 5in centre back Elliott Moore has joined Oxford United from Leicester City on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee. Has represented England at under 18 and 20 level in the past.

Oxford have just banked the best part of £2m for Gavin White so must have money to burn on new players, although god knows how a player can be be worth £2m after signing on a free last season, Oxford seem to have mastered the art of getting maximum transfer fees for their players.

We could have had him too, after the chief scout was tipped off about him months before they signed him.

I do think a valid point to make is that we haven’t received a transfer fee that we can reinvest in the playing squad like we have done in previous seasons. Last year we sold Harrison, the year before that Bodin and the year before that Taylor and though we arguably didn’t get as much we could of done for them, the revenue received was still enough to pay for the wages of a couple that we might not have been able to afford previously.
Lots of envious eyes will be cast at Oxford, Portsmouth, Doncaster and Blackpool I’m sure but until we find our own gem to sell for a couple of million quid, we will have no chance in competing with some of the signings that they are making.
