My Uncle played back in the 50s. Some refer to the team he played in as the best team Rovers have had, especially in 52/53. He was Geoff Fox, but it was unfortunately before my time so I never got to see him play. Not many would argue about that side being our best ever, a whisker away from what is now premier league, wonder how things would have panned out had we made it?

Just a random question, but has any of your family or your friends ever play for the Gas? My uncle - Bernard Hall did in the 1960's..anyone else? Remember Bernard well always looked small for a goalie, good keeper though and fearless, which in the end cost him dear, hope he is enjoying retirement!

went to same school as the legendary Gordon Bennett and was one of his 'noisy' gang at Eastville, I know he never played for the Gas but he did everything else but! tremendous character ,could do with his enthusiasm and positivity on this forum! Had some very good players in that schools team, Steve Frith being the best by far, could and should have made it, early version of Paul Scholes! he never realised how good he was though!

When I lived in Longwell Green Justin Skinner lived next door for 6 months whilst waiting for the house he had bought to be finished! Ian Holloway lived 200 yards away and in those days it was not unusual to see 5 or 6 of the squad jogging together during pre-season to keep fit.

Not sure if this counts, but as a kid I was involved in an impromptu kick around with Phil Purnell on the Rec in Winterbourne in the late 80s (could have been just before the promotion season). His parents lived in the next road to us.*
*I’m assuming this is not a false memory but subsequent years at university could have impaired my recollection.

The Mabbutts used to live in the next street to us , and we used to walk to junior school with them and played football with them in a lane at the end of their road. Also my Great Granddad (might have been G-g) was landlord of the Star in Fishponds when Eastville Rovers were based there.

I am part of the Morgan family (on my mother’s side) who had enough family members to field their own family team in the 1930s. Jimmy Morgan played for the Rovers in the 1950s and his uncle Jerry Morgan played in the 1920s. My grandparents lived near Eastville Park and it was great to hear the Eastville Roar when I was busy them on a Saturday before I was old enough to go to matches. Another family member played for the City. We don’t talk about him 🙂 Any of them Kingswood boys, whose parents had the Essex ? I had trials for Rovers youth team and got through to the final game. We were then mixed with regular players and I had Holloway, Penrice in the side I was picked for. Colin Dobson politely asked me if I had any other sport I liked, at the end 😂. I can laugh now but cried at the time. Bristol parkway had a lot of talent. Ah! Bristol Parkway - the teams were run/managed by Roy Dolling and Ron Sims if I recall.

Lived 2 doors away from Peter Aitken when I was growing up. Mate of mine in work lives next door to Lee Mansell right now.

An old classmate of mine who still goes like me to every game, we are in our seventies now, said he used to play football in the street in Staple Hill. One day one of the boys brought his friend along to join in. His name? Geoff Bradford. I would have died happy if that was me.
