My Brother took part and won the Evening Post Boys Penalty Competition some 40 odd years ago. He won the final by putting 9 past Ray Cashley at Aston Gate. They gave him a City kit and scarf. when he said he didn't want it, they got a courier to go and get a Rovers one

I went to Broadoak School In Weston Super Nightmare and was in the same class as Gareth Taylor
We also played in the same club side, the mighty Milton Nomads.
I was blatantly the better player, but he got the break
One funny game at school v local rivals Wyvern, his old man ran on the pitch and punched the ref.
He was a nutter mind. Welsh.
He now works for one of Man City’s academy groups and my brother sees him a fair bit. Lovely bloke by all accounts!

The goalkeeper from the 1905 Southern League winning side, Arthur Cartlidge (who went on to play in the First Division for Stoke and Aston Villa), used to lodge with my great grandparents. He gave my then teenage grandfather, goalkeeping lessons.

My brother in law played CM alongside Ollie Clarke up until they were 18 and I would call Mark Mckeever a friend albeit mostly through going on the water more than anything.
He once told me the difference between good and bad players is purely pressure. Imagine how you feel when you mess up on a Sunday and your teammates give you stick... then multiply that by 7000 and you can understand why players go missing!

The best I can do is that I was friends with Rob Claridge in primary school. Not sure he ever made any senior appearances for the Gas though.
And I was in the year above Danny Coles in high school.

Yes, he is coach for the academy which looks to bring in players from the same area the owners come from! Their hope is to one day have a player play in the league to promote the game. All to do with globalisation of the game, my brother goes up there a fair bit and often gets to take his son into the ground to meet players and see the facilities. Another world. On another tangent, I see Bale could be off to China for a reported £1 million/week Could we somehow get him to buy us a ground? Only take him a few weeks, and I’m guessing it will hardly be hard work playing in that league?

My son was with Rovers as a goalkeeper from the ages of 10-14, they used to train at Fry's one evening a week. Brian Parkin often came to do some work with them, and John Ward and Dennis Booth sometimes came along to watch the matches they played, I remember hearing Wardy say "That keeper's a safe pair of hands" - the inner glow of parental pride went off the scale! This was pre-academy days, and the players were made to feel part of the club.
Roy Dolling came to our house in Bath to tell us that they were going to let him go, as he wasn't tall enough - he's now 6' 1" but unfortunately he didn't have his "growth spurt" until he was 17. Luckily he wasn't too disappointed, as by then he was very into playing golf, and this was the career he followed. He's played in The Open, and on the European and Challenge Tours, and now plays mainly in South Africa, but one of his best experiences was playing a round with his heroes, Brian Parkin and Andy Tilson, and a few games with Geoff Twentyman.

I went to school from infants through to seniors with Mike Trought. Many a school lunchtime game played, after school, boys club and school team games played with him.
You could always tell he was miles better than anyone else from the age of 8. I remember in junior school one lunchtime he was a bit off form and I nicked the ball off him then nutmegged him to go around him. He got so angry with that he pulled me back and kicked me up the arse!
He was a great lad though and it was a shame he never kicked on after Ollie left and then became part of the drinking culture that ruined Simon Bryant’s career.
He still lives around by my mum and dad and I still bump into him now and again.
