Just seen this old picture of the vast Muller Rd End pre M32 and what might have been had it not been for our short sighted owners back in the 40s.

Interesting that we went for mood lighting along the side rather than floodlights in the corner. 😂

The size of that site with the Yoye End car park and the area where Tesco now stands could have housed a 50,000 all-seater with parking, bus terminals, and of course a mainline railway station a 5 minute walk away. I used the train every home game from Avonmouth.
What a missed opportunity.

I used the train every home game from Avonmouth. What a missed opportunity. Can see why people might say that with the benefit of hindsight. But I don’t recall (maybe wrong) too many clubs back in the day (assume that photo is mid 60’s at latest) going for those sorts of developments. It’s only post the various and sad tragedies that blighted football grounds home and abroad that the calls were made to modernise grounds which was therefore much later than this photo. The other factor is that, suppose the ground was developed as suggested (have to ask what would have driven them to do so given the way we were back then) how would it sit with the modern day retail developments that sits around it now (ok accept that it would be different to that currently in place)? Traffic, motorway etc. All speculation I grant you, but think what I am saying is that it is easy with the benefit of hindsight to say one thing now that in reality, rightly or wrongly, was not the thought processes of a lot of clubs in the time back then. Hopefully that makes some sort of sense. Anyway onwards to the new stadium....what’s that you say? Haven’t you heard? Oops! Was supposed to be a secret.....ah well!

Looks better than what we’ve got at the Mem now! There aren’t many clubs who play in a worse ground now than they did 50 or 60 years ago, but we’ve managed it!

That was one of my hopes with ALQ's coming in, that an outsider may shake things up a bit. True to form our Council could stop a speeding bullet in their bare teeth

If I remember rightly Rovers received a small sum of money to leave Eastville before the lease had expired. I wonder if it might have been better to stay at Eastville for as long as possible.

Flook and Bradshaw sold out our rights that we had acquired as tenants for about 280k I think and then took a short term tenancy. Dunfords took over with a year of that tenancy still to run and moved us to Bath. Maybe Flook and Bradshaw should have fought for a better outcome I don’t know. We’ve always been the victim of short termism whoever has been running the show but there is little doubt that we would have had the potential to achieve a lot more and have a very decent ground had it not been for the 1940 decision. I think the ground was sold to the Greyhound co by the chairman without consent of the Board .
