Coughlan doesn't sound too happy that it has been reported by the press before it was officially announced but he has also as good as confirmed it. "This is the beauty of football. We haven't had any confirmation, it hasn't been decided and yet it seems to have appeared in the Scottish papers.
I have got my suspicions as to who has put it in the paper and where it has come from but I will clear it up.""With the introduction of Tyler Smith and Victor Adeboyejo, Gavin found having five strikers at the club he didn't feel he could meet the challenge and gain regular first team football so he has asked if he could go out and get some first team football. "I said not a problem, as soon as someone wants to step off the bus I open up the doors and let them off. "I fully understand his wish to play regularly at his age [26], at his stage of his career having come down from Scotland as well. There is no prize for guessing how it has ended up in the Scottish papers."It is something Gav has chosen to do and I am not going to stop him because if he doesn't want to stay and fight I can't make him stay and fight for his place, stay and be competitive with the other four strikers. I can't make him stay. The ball is in his court. "He wants to play first team football which we have to be respectful of and look, take me back six months and Kyle Bennett came to see me and he wanted guarantees of first team football and I just can't give guarantees so they go, they get the chance. "If they are good enough to hold down a place they stay, if they play well they stay in, if not they come out. "Gavin Reilly has just opted to explore his options." Sounds like Reilly compared his skills and ability against the other forwards in the squad and decided he wouldn’t play much because his were of inferior quality. With an attitude like that, when there are so many with little or no experience and only one “guaranteed to start when fit “ striker (JCH), I cant see how he would ever have had enough confidence to be a success with us. Not the first player to bottle it in the face of a challenge...but to me it didn’t seem that daunting a challenge if you’re prepared to back yourself.

Sounds like GC is watery as hell Well it's his own fault. From 6 strikers? now what is left. JCH out injured and only one good season of consistent scoring. Nichols. Good form at scoring only in lowers leadues Deon Moore young and inexperienced. No history at this level. Tyler Smith Young and inexperienced at this level and no history Mensah out on loan Reilly out on loan. All the signals were there for Reilly to think he would not get a look in as GC has to play loan signing or they will be recalled. Ask DC re Mc Burnie etc IMO sounds like inexperience as a manger has kicked him in the nuts in handling players who think, real or imagined, they wont got a look in. I hope for everyones sake the young lonees grow up very quickly. Of course the transfer window is still open for the marque signing hehe update on squad numbers release. Adeboyejo and Smith added to first team squad and Reilly listed as well. Moore omitted. JCH and Adeb No 9's so Reilly Nichols and Smith the other striker. We all know Nichols was first choice so having to play loanees Smith would have jumped the queue. From Reilly point of view he was a best a bench warmer as he was last year.

I don't think it sounds like that- Reilly was a peripheral player last season and when your manager prefers to play a striker who has scored less than you have in 4 times as many appearances and then brings two more in on loan you have the choice of either trying to change his opinion through small cameos (if he is lucky) and spending a lot of time on the bench or actually doing what you are paid for somewhere else and proving your worth that way. If he was a waster he would be happy to sit on the bench but he isn't because he wants to play and prove his worth. There is risk there too - if he proves he can't score for Cheltenham then where does he go from there?

I just wish Coughlan could get players on the bus as quickly as he lets them leave off the bus. Two days to go to the first game and IMO we are short of three players still.GC a bit contradictive I feel that one time he says he likes to just do business quietly whereas not long ago he was talking about Marquee signings!

He was also talking about being happy for players to go out on loan in another thread. His media stuff is really grating on me because like you say, one minute he is full of it, then he is not, contradicts himself and I thought the digs at Reilly not being man enough to fight for his place were in very poor taste especially after he had a dig at the Irish media for leaking stuff that he wanted kept in house. I think he could do with reading that book by Alex Ferguson, having pops at your players in the media is not a good look.

He has struggled all summer because of the budget Wael has given him. Only today he has mentioned how he couldn't compete with Blackpool for a player.

There is risk there too - if he proves he can't score for Cheltenham then where does he go from there? Possibly, but they all get exactly the same amount of time to impress in training...and one of the reasons DC kept giving for persisting with Nichols was that he was showing up well in training. Now unless GC doesn’t pay any attention to form shown in training Reilly would have had more than just cameos in matches to change his manager’s mind.

Personally couldn't give a monkeys how they perform in training - its on the pitch that matters. It does worry me that we can't compete with Blackpool for a player and if that is the case then perhaps Wael should be looking at the point of bothering and buying us in the first place. It has to be said that a lot of the debt has been built up on things that have had no fruition ie people appointed to look at Training grounds and stadiums and too much emphasis on backroom staff rather than getting the playing side right. We seem to have the backroom staff of a Championship club and the playing side of a bottom League 1/ Top-middle League 2 and the ground of a National League side. In many ways we haven't moved on from the ragbag Rovers.

Kind of, although you haven't taken manager's biases into account. Managers can be biased towards certain players, we saw it with DC where his favourites always got a game no matter when they were out of form. I guess the question is, if you were Reilly what would you do? Stay and fight for your place or go on loan to try and kick start things?

And yet, scarily, they claim that 95p of every pound generated goes to the players despite admin costs going up by 300% or whatever it was from the Higgs regime. I can't even figure out what our strategy is any more. I don't think we have one apart from hope that our youth can bolster the gaps in the squad.
