What do Ze germans make of Rugby Nobby? It's a growing sport here. Germany play in the Europa Division and they are hoping to qualify for a World Cup within the next eight years. The German National team play their games about 2km from my home in the stadium of the Offenbach Kickers. I've been to watch a couple of times with German friends, and it's not that bad a standard. Germany are crying out for another sport because apart from football there is no other sport that they watch that draws large crowds. Like most lower level nations they have a sprinkling of SA. NZ, French etc players. The fastest growing sport here is Cricket, with over 400 new clubs being started in the last year. This is mainly due to the influx of migrants, especially Indians. I was looking at the world rankings and it's amazing how many countries participate in rugby. I think it might yet take off. There's definitely a gap for a team sport like it, being as exciting but so very different to association football. American football will never catch on because it's a load of stop-start bollox designed for TV and staged purely for advertisers' money.

When you see countries like Spain making progress it makes you realise that there are a lot of countries playing rugby now.

What I like about rugby union (and league) is the respect that the players have for the referee. In football, from kids age groups onwards the very opposite is true.

In a similar vein, I like the way the laws are set up so that it's virtually impossible to get an advantage by breaking them (provided the ref notices, of course) whereas in football you can often accept a free kick or a yellow card coz letting play continue could be worse.

Why did I agree to view a house at 10:30! Ffs! Enjoy the rugby and have a beer. Women decide on house-buying, so you are not required to attend.

Wales were within a missed drop goal of beating these. Just saying.

One thing is probably for sure.. we won't play as well as we did against New Zealand and South Africa won't play as badly as they did against Wales. I guess we must be the bookies favourites, but it is by no means in the bank. Still.. at least we aren't playing Wales. That would have been horrific... Probably for sure, that made me laugh. I think ENGLAND will , if anything, play better. We hammered them in the warm up games and fast Eddie seems more with it and exudes a quiet confidence that I’ve not seen in him before plus we have cut out the silly penalties. I expect SA to try their kicking game, as did Wales but this is a totally different squad, in mindset and skill levels. I feel pretty darn confident of a sound victory. We really have learned from our mistakes This post hasn’t aged well! Sorry KP, for fans like you I’m sad England lost. I’ve just had a week of sneering because Wales lost to an absolute rabble whilst England won the real final playing champagne rugby. As it turns out, Eddie Jones would have been better not mocking Wales and heeding Warren Gatland’s advice about playing your final in the semi final. Gatland’s game plan to kick the leather off the ball against SA was ugly but it was spot on. If I was an England fan I’d be petitioning the RFU to get Warren Gatland to name his price and ditch that specialist in failure Jones who knows nothing better than how to lose a World Cup final whilst being extremely ungracious in the process.

Is it a legitimate result all of a sudden because it makes England feel better about themselves? Genuine question!

Baiting aside you could argue that it’s SA > Wales > England > NZ right now which would make sense with SA being world and SH champions and a fully fit Wales winning a grand slam. To argue against that you would have to say that the 3rd place play off is as significant as the final, when it was a joke of a game last week when England were prepping for the final. Can’t have it both ways.

Is it a legitimate result all of a sudden because it makes England feel better about themselves? Genuine question! Is it a legitimate result? I don't really even get what you're asking to he honest. If you mean Wales losing to New Zealand then yes it's a legitimate result as you lost. Or if you mean losing in a semis by a whisker then yes it is a legitimate result as you lost. Are you just trying to make yourself feel better about yourself despite the fact you lost in the semis? Or is it just the old Welsh obsession with England?

It does have to be said you had a far easier route to the semis too. And only just scraped past a pretty average Australian side.
Every game is a completely different scenario. It's so easy to say that "we only lost by 3". Rovers manage to get done all the time teams that have been getting thrashed left right and centre. Just look at the Bolton game!

I’m just saying it’s hard to say NZ are 30 points better than Wales because both sides made decisions they wouldn’t under proper test conditions- ie both sides took tap penalties, in this day and age the tap penalty is the preserve of exhibition rugby so it’s hard to argue that England are better than Wales because they beat NZ and NZ trounced wales in a meaningless game. I should wind my neck in at this point, I’m usually very gracious when it comes to rugby, I’ve just had a week of mockery at Wales because we apparently played like a bunch of school kids last week when actually it turns out that Wales game plan was spot on and we got a lot closer than England did. That’s not to say that England don’t deserve credit, they played a literally perfect game of rugby to beat NZ and as a Wales fan I felt hopeless at times vs SA because an England final looked like a step too far. I just wish there was more respect for Wales who, it turns out, are better than people think (including myself). I also reiterate that you need to ditch Eddie Jones, did well against NZ fair play but he shames rugby with his snide attitude. He should be managing Manchester United. If you had Warren Gatland you would be very very hard to stop.

If you had Warren Gatland you would be very very hard to stop. To be fair it was a typical English week where everyone thought we'd won before we'd even kicked off. We heaped all the pressure on ourselves and it fully played into South Africa's hands. It's almost as if a lot of our fans forget we've lost far more critical games in almost every sport than we've won! Anyway this is a Rovers forum so I'll leave it there. A fiver to watch Rovers lose on Ifollow later with a few lunchtime beers for me today.

Yeah I think you looked past the final after beating NZ, to be fair I probably would have done the same if Wales has beaten NZ in that manner!

Wales were within a missed drop goal of beating these. Just saying. Quite clearly SA didn't bother getting out of 2nd gear to beat Wales. The score line was immaterial, they beat you and you didn't get to the final, just like you never have. SA obviously upped their game against England and played most of it in overdrive. They knew they had to do that to stand ant chance of winning. Both scenarios are probably ridiculous. The fact remains that SA beat both Wales and England. There's no shame in that, and we can both be proud of what we achieved in this World Cup.
