The thing is these foreign premier league executives and coaches lack a fundamental understanding of the nuances and cultural sensitivities around English football and the affect that introducing these B teams would have on supporters. Bit of controversial opinion perhaps but I genuinely don't think it comes down to greed, I think it comes down to them thinking "this system works perfectly fine in my country, why on earth hasn't England adopted it yet". When in fact if B teams were introduced into the lower leagues it would make a lot of fixtures non events, push teams like Rovers down the pyramid and take the spotlight away from historic, well supported clubs, which is something supporters in this country really don't want. I'm just hoping the premier league themselves, show a bit more common sense and stop these calls by the chief executives in their tracks before things start to get ugly. I think you are spot on with this Axe, English football is unique in the way it is in the fabric of its culture, football began in England and has been there a long time (to the extent that it was banned by Edward II in the early 14th century, coincidentally English was not his native tongue and he didn't really understand the traditions of the lower classes either). The guy from Manchester City is taking what happens in his country and assuming it will work in England.

Wenger did it with his disregard for the cup competitions until Wembley loomed and a lot of them question not having a winter break when they first come here.

The guy from Manchester City is taking what happens in his country and assuming it will work in England. Let's not forget Man City own clubs all over the world. It would be incredibly convenient for them (and any other big club that can afford to do so) to have a direct feeder club in the lower leagues. Especially given that they may not be easily able to farm their youth players off abroad since UK left the EU. Make no mistake; the motives are greedy. They want to hoover up as many academy players as possible and give them as much competitive exposure as possible. Widening the gap between the big clubs and the small clubs and ensure the top 4-6 places will be even more monopolised than they are already. To accommodate the additional clubs; there was talk of adding tiers into the Football League... but I suppose if the lockdown continues then more clubs will end up going bust and when the Premier League clubs swoop they will just be making up the numbers...

Yes axe I’m sure you’re right. I suspect most of us on Gaschat and all over the country who support clubs outside the PL hark back to a “golden age” when football was far more equal, when there were 92 FL clubs not 72 EFL clubs. Fans will look back to the time when they were at their best whenever that was. For us it may be the late 50s through to the 90s depending on your vintage. Foreign owners or even younger, British based owners will have a completely different view of football. They will look to “grow the brand” similar to what Lansdowne has done to the the other lot. Just as Lansdowne has adopted a strategy to diminish his rivals (us) and establish his brand in Bristol so the different clubs in the PL will do their best to grow their clubs and support by diminishing others. Of course no one will come out and admit that but that is effectively what will happen and what they are trying to do. The PL is a completely different entity from the EFL and have gone in different directions since 1992. I’m afraid the EFL clubs appear to be hanging on by their/our fingernails to any kind of progress. Once the PL agree to help the EFL clubs financially we all know there will be a price to pay for that and I’m afraid that B clubs will be that ultimate price. It may take a few years but it will happen for all the reasons you’ve said. I don’t like it but I’m not important and I don’t think there are any answers for most of the EFL clubs that they like or find acceptable. I’d say they need to secure their futures by becoming sustainable and matching income to expenditure but that’s unlikely to happen. Once they compromised by accepting U23 teams into the Checkatrade or whatever it’s called for the money they were offered, it showed that most of the owners of lower league clubs will do anything for extra income. It was a financial decision and whilst I dont like it I’d rather they admitted what it was and stop trying to bull**** me about it helping young players and helping the England team or making it a better competition. They fooled themselves if they thought that was it, it wasn’t. Once they accepted payments for that other compromises will follow. UTG!

If cricket is an example, this would not work! The FA , etc. would probably indicate that any players who play in these leagues may then not be allowed to play for England, Premier League teams, etc. Kerry Packer example. Also like cricket’s 2 division elites, no threat of relegation from 2nd division which is one of the reasons county cricket is full and stagnant in this country?Sorry yaz but that’s rubbish. Can’t comment about Division 2 red-ball cricket but I’ve watched nearly every ball of Somerset’s home matches over the past 4/5 years and most of their away matches and in Division 1 County cricket is vibrant, popular, tough and hard-fought amongst very good teams. But I have also enjoyed this conference-style Bob Willis Trophy which I hope will stay where every team has a chance of winning the Championship. But I agree with your general point, it’s just a poor analogy. UTG! OK Fair enough. Enjoy the cricket! Me, I am loving Every minute of the IPL. Superb watch?

They fooled themselves if they thought that was it, it wasn’t. Once they accepted payments for that other compromises will follow. UTG! The Premier League brand image is and always has been a lot stronger than the EFL one is, therefore one of the biggest threats to the EFL comes from disgruntled Championship clubs who see an opportunity to form a Premier League 2 where better TV deals can be arranged through the PL's connections and overseas players can be drawn to the 'name'. I think the EFL thought that by bringing B teams into the Football League trophy, they could appease the growing calls from those involved in the Premier League for more involvement in the lower leagues at only the expense of what was a poorly attended sideshow competition (I actually rather liked the old JPT but there we go). The problem with that is, its allowed the notion of B teams to get its foot in the door, becoming a slightly more accepted concept and the EFL was always going to be left vulnerable to further encroachment and interference from the Premier League as a consequence of it going forward. I can't stress it enough that there absolutely should be no price to pay for EFL clubs who need financial assistance from the premier league to survive. EFL clubs regularly develop PL academy talent, form an integral part of the competitions the PL clubs compete in and going beyond that make up a huge part of the social fabric of the UK, whether that be from providing a distraction to people who work 9-5, 5 days a week or the tremendous work that a lot do in the community. It would be a travesty to see 6 or 7 league clubs go out of business from this but equally outrageous if the PL manipulates the EFL for financial support in return for B teams within the pyramid. I really hope it doesn't.

If Premier League clubs want a B Team they should do what other clubs have had to do to form new clubs, Manchester City start a team in the North West Counties, Chelsea start a team in the Combined Counties, etc etc. It can be done, Chelsea even bought their second stadium off a club that has done it.

Thanks wareham, good article and it chimes very well with my own feelings on the matter. Soriano quite frankly can go f**k himself.

Its been good to see a lot of people come out against this. from managers such as Neil Warnock to many journalists. People at the top just don't get what the lower leagues are about.
Man Utd fan Dave from Torquay who once went to Old Trafford for a league cup game say's we need B teams because they do it in Spain! These are the types of people for the idea. They have no idea about lower league football or how it works.
