Bristol Rovers do not have a successor lined up to replace Ben Garner, Bristol Live understands, with the club set to welcome applications in the coming days.Garner was sacked shortly after the 4-1 defeat to Fleetwood Town on Saturday with Rovers 18th in League One with just three wins from 11 games. Focus quickly turned on Saturday evening to who Rovers will select to succeed him. The early bookmakers’ favourite for the job is head of recruitment Tommy Widdrington, who is set to be in caretaker charge for Wednesday’s EFL Trophy tie with Chelsea U21s and is priced as an odds-on chance. But the club do not intend to consider him as a candidate, nor does the 49-year-old crave the job full time.Instead, Rovers plan to conduct an application process over the next couple of weeks before narrowing down contenders and holding interviews.
Widdrington, CEO Martyn Starnes and of course owner Wael Al-Qadi will oversee that process. Starnes is expected to discuss the situation with the press this week. Some fans suspected an immediate successor was waiting in the wings given the swift swing of the axe that ended Garner’s reign within 90 minutes of full time on Saturday.
That is not the case and the club is open-minded on options to replace Garner.
His coaching staff of Jack Mesure, Kevin Maher and David Coles remain employed by the club and they are expected to stay unless they wish to depart.
The club is believed to be eager to ensure its new manager coalesces with the existing framework and strategy to make the club more sustainable by developing talent from within. There will also be an expectation to deliver an attacking, entertaining style of football that Garner promised but ultimately failed to deliver. Garner’s game management is understood to have been a particular concern for decision-makers at Rovers, with like-for-like substitutions and naive passages of play in recent weeks testing their patience before the Fleetwood debacle proved to be the final straw.
There was no revolt from within the dressing room, but the board had seen enough and believe a different voice is required to get the best out of this overhauled squad. But Rovers will not panic and rip up the template to start from scratch. They have faith in their strategy and the players recruited. And, while remaining open-minded on possible successors, a more proven manager is the preference.

Thanks for posting this. Interesting. So the new manager will have to fit us - we're not going to make wholesale (or any) changes to suit him. Or so it seems.

It's a bit early to make that assumption from just an article on Bristol Live? Isn’t that what the article states? I’d be surprised if we made wholesale changes. We’ve just bought in 14 new players apparently to follow 7 in January (appreciate some were loans then and now though)

It's a bit early to make that assumption from just an article on Bristol Live? Yes, fair enough, but it fits with my impression of Wael. And his apparent vision for the club. Although you could then say that's why Bristol Live said it.

I came to the same conclusion reading that. I think for me that is what I would like to see, a manger that buys into the vision of our owner and club and works towards that instead of us having to start all over again every time we lose a manager. Some may see it differently to me though

So a club in league one in a ramshackle ground is expecting an experienced manager who has a reputation for positive attacking football to waltz in and be happy to work with our current head of recruitment AND his predecessors support staff AND his players?
Pfffffft.
We’re not Sunderland or Ipswich, that is a hell of an ask. Any manager worth his salt is going to need us convincing them not the other way around and having these requirements that the new man will have to fit into is going to limit the quality of applicants considerably one would think. I fear we will end up with another Garner who hasn’t made a name for themselves yet and is desperate for a job and will say anything to smooth talk the owners that they can fit into the parameters. I can’t see a Paul Cook character being happy with those constraints.

This isn’t a dig at the Post as to be honest Sam Frost has been spot on with regards to new signings but I would suspect that he would have got the stories from the same source who obviously knew when a player had agreed to sign for us prior to the end of his contract and subject to the medical and laid that news onto Sam who then managed to report it like a week before it actually was made official by the club.
However when it comes to the manager position even though they are reporting there is no sucessor lined up and the club will await applications I do believe that the club will have a number one target in mind and the person who gets the job would have been sounded out prior to yeterday’s news.
They obviously will look at applicants as there could very well be a person who applies and the board go “ooooh didn’t think he would be interested” but my hunch is they have the person they want in mind and its a case if they can get that person on board.

Any manager coming in will naturally want his own back up/assistant manager - the club certainly wouldn't stand in their way. I also don't think it's unfair for a L1 club to ask for L1 experience who prefers attacking football (won't most managers consider themselves attacking anyway?) Regarding recruitment & players - well it's not often a manager comes in in November and changes the entire squad in January. We certainly don't need that and I think a manager will naturally see some players come and go. Ultimately if the right manager (EG Cook) came along, I'd fully expect the board to make some concessions anyway for the right person.

Was very close to getting the City job who have far superior facilities, team ability, premier league aspirations than our own, so I’ll be thinking that’s more his level than 3rd division mid table mediocrity in a stadium that most league 2 teams would be ashamed of. If we’re going for a proven manager Willing to work within those constraints, then that screams either Flynn or Nigel Adkins to me, the latter I wouldn’t be happy with.

“A more proven manager would be preferred”
Proven at any level or only league one above? The latter will rule out a lot of names that have been mentioned.

Lee Johnson not liked but obvious choice I said to to my mate earlier, if you look at the Sky Bet market for the job. If the BEP is correct which I believe they are right about the new man having to follow the clubs way of operating with regards to transfer recruitment model such as getting younger players in, develope them and them sell them on for a profit then Johnson is probably one of a few on that list who fits that criteria. TBH I don’t give a t**s if his voice is annoying or he managed the City!! If he was the best candidate in the boards eyes then I would support his appointment 100%. The fans who don’t want him will more than likely have other reasons too but deep down it will more than likely be because of his City connection and these fans were probably the same when we signed Steve Phillips and lets be honest even though Walker and Lambert are the main players fans remember from that season for getting us promoted there is no way we would have made the play-offs had it not been for Phillips in goal. Yes he did spend money at City which looks massive compared to what we and other teams spend in league 1 and I may very well be wrong but if you look at City’s spending is the the championship it was probably around halfway or below other teams in it yet bar his last season and even until he got sacked they still had a chance of getting in the play-offs the team always finished higher than the previous season and this was done by signing younger players. Like I said I will judge a player/manager on what I believe is thier good/bad points and not who they played for/managed in the past. If he was to get the job it would be because the board feel he is the best candidate and if its someone else it will be because they are the best candidate in the boards eyes and not because of their previous connections.

I said it previously, the road Rovers are taking will surely be one where there won't be much upheaval.
The ethos and philosophy wont change, even if Garner failed, the next manager coming in and the next one after that, and the next one etc, won't need to make wholesale changes.
A model like Swansea's where they had Kenny Jacket, Roberto Martinez, Paulo Sousa, Brendan Rodgers and Michael Laudrup etc who pretty much all had the same philosophy, which led to Swansea's success from the 3rd Division to the Premier League and staying their for a number of years. They still have the same philosophy now.
Brentford as well, seem to have a similar philosophy.
This is the sort of model Wael wants.

There are examples of many clubs that have a vision and way of operating and the managers they employ fit that model. It can work and I believe this is the way forward for BRFC and many other clubs trying to adapt to this way of thinking. We need to change the way we run as a club and most modern managers now understand that clubs are moving in this direction. I feel if we had to convince a manager to come here he wouldn’t be the right man anyway, most likely a journey man manager.
