Rovers: Alexis Andre-Jr, Mark Little, Josh Hare, Pablo Martinez, Niall Lovelock, David Tutonda, Cameron Hargreaves, Ben Liddle, Erhun Oztumer, Zain Walker, James Daly.
Subs: Jed Ward, Harry Warwick, Joe Budd, Lucas Tomlinson, Kieran Phillips, Ryan Jones, Sam Heal, James Gorman.
Lost two nil at Exeter but good to see a few familiar names getting game time.

U18's centre back. Previous to joining our youth setup he was with Bath City.

Strong team on paper. Most of those players have first team experience.
Disappointing therefore to lose 2-0.

Just about keeping players fresh/improving fitness, result doesn't matter. I will say this though, Exeters development and youth set up is very good, better than quite a few at our level.

I would agree Exeter's set up is first class. Their Academy did at the time have one of the first full size cork based 4G's in the country. The problem with Rovers, its the leadership teams at Head of Academy, Professional Development Phase including 18's, and then the Youth Development phase. They are all basically not fit for purpose. The Foundation Level have some very good guys that pass on some decent talent, then its jobs for the boys from there on.
Its not the players fault, just the inept coaching (Lack off) from the part timers and being lead by the same inept abilities.
I think Weal can see this, as the original plan was to include the whole academy set up at the quarters and looks like this is simply not on the cards now.
Its a shame there has been some decent talent slipping through the net, and that includes the coaching staff that have left. Same as every club I guess. Weal's got a big job on his hands at the moment. He got the First Team Managers and Coaching staff right now, lets just hope he does the same further down the club. Perhaps even do a Brentwood or Huddersfield.

Without studying our coaching set up in great detail who are these current leaders you are speaking about that are not fit for purpose ? And what/who could be brought in to change the current structure ? If your right it seems things need to change ASAP.

albaron , stuart1974. For the sake of the clubs future they either need to take the decision to go for it and turn the academy into a viable concern, or do what some EFL clubs are doing and scrap it and buy players in for the first and reserve team. That would make them a Tier 4 academy (currently Rovers are Tier 3).
Problem of going for it takes a lot of money resource and facilities. None of which Weal seems in the last 2 or 3 years to want to commit to. I'm not saying that's wrong because at the risk of being shot down, I am a Fan of Weal's. Buying players in is an option because you have none of the academy expense so you can invest in the hear and now, but the risk is no long term player prospects to play in the first team and go on to be big money transfer targets.
The original plan was for the quarters to house the First, Reserve, and everything below to the 7s, including the Women's squad. That appears to have disappeared now, and left the club with silly money being spent on hiring two three venues for training. Doesn't include the sums of money spent on other venues we hire for matches if they cant switch home games to away games.
The London thing was only because in their opinion we were losing out to our friends across the bridge, dare I say it here BCFC and the Saints. Which is 100% the wrong opinion for me.
I think we are at the chicken and egg stage. Just like the Stadium (but that's another argument). The academy is training on borrowed rented, anything they can lay their hands on pitches all over North Bristol. Some very good Lockleaze Sports Centre, some very poor SBL. I have seen 2 sometimes 3 age groups trying to train on the same pitch at the same time!! with no where near the Tier 3 required members of coaching staff. What they did have they might as well of not bothered.
Unfortunately this reflects in the coaching staff, you get what you pay for. The standard for the part timers for some at worst is inept they move on as they have a club on there CV and at best is great but most of the great have left (Luke Smith now West Ham, Tim Jones, serie A Paul Hughes went back to the military to name but a few) not Foundation wont have a bad word to say about those guys.
You just need to see the current Head of the academy organising pro terms (and the first to get a contract in the summer)for his son who cant get a game in the first team at the moment (apart from 5 mins against Stanley). You can argue he is up and coming but I am sorry signing him above and releasing the 3 or 4 very good and I mean very good midfielders, to me is nepotism. A couple of which have gone onto much bigger and better things. This is the tip of the iceberg and is just one example of the Head of Academy, Lead Professional phase 18's the same, Lead Youth Development the same (TP I will not include as done a decent job with what he has been given from the other two phases I have mentioned). For me making decisions on behalf of the club at the level they are at is just wrong.
Its my opinion but its a bun fight between egos that think they know what they are doing and just there to promote there own. Unfortunately this is all at the expense of the Clubs finances and talent both Coaches and Players. Joey has a big job, if he has the time and ability to review the academy with Weal, I would expect to see major changes. Some one needs to take control and make a decision on either way for me. The Club comes first.

Perhaps even do a Brentwood or Huddersfield. Exeter only have a 3G pitch, not a 4g pitch and they were in danger of losing there category 3 status, so they have just announced plans to replace the old buildings with new, now that they have signed a 25 year lease at the training ground. You say Wael has not put much in lately, he’s just paid off nearly £20 million in debt and started the first phase of the training ground. He still says we will be completing phase two at a later stage. We will have to wait and see if that happens. Some say the 2nd phase won’t happen, but then again, the same people said the first phase wouldn’t happen.

Don’t think we released any that have gone onto bigger and better things. A few moaned before that had player’s in the youth set up, but that seemed like sour grapes. Hargreaves has been given game time under a lot of managers, so they must see something in him. We are lucky to have Hargreaves senior involved with the youth team IMO. He’s managed in the football league himself and some have wondered why he hasn’t been put in temporary charge, when managers have left. Plus we have Mansell involved. Is the youth set up really that bad??? Only ever heard bad things from parent’s of player’s released. Saying they would go onto better things, then they couldn’t get a game at non league level. By the sounds of it, someone still has sour grapes. So I wouldn’t pay too much attention to them.

Interesting thread
My son plays development football and it’s very telling locally where the strengths lie to make the step up to academy football
City, Cardiff, Cheltenham , FGR and now even Glos City having tier 3 status are mopping up the local talent
Rovers haven’t had scouts on the ground for quite a few years now , can’t speak for all the age groups but this years rovers u13 are not particularly strong , turned over easily by BIC 6-2 last time they had a fixture. Completely out muscled.
BIC do not feed rovers. All the talent goes to Bristol City with the occasional boy wriggling loose of his own accord and signing with FGR / Cheltenham, etc . City have just signed 3 u13s from Bic and FGR also signed one. Rovers nowhere near having a clue where the next generation are at
It’s not good news for local boys and def not good for rovers Academy longevity.
I see today they are advertising for scouts. About time !

As Wael really binned Phase 2 of the Quarters development, or is this another ITK'er making something a fact which may not be the case, as the feedback from the posters who've talked to workmen etc seems to suggest there's still plenty of work being planned at Almondsbury.
Regardless I assume JB will want to replicate the impressive Fleetwood (Academy?) training complex at Rovers?
