Saw a comment from an Exeter fan saying Rovers looked good going forward, but that’s no good when the defence parted like the Red Sea. What annoyed me was even before the first goal they were using their flanks to get behind us with ease & we were unable to change our system to cope with it. My biggest concern here. Why didnt JB change shape (or even players) after the 2nd goal. Ok we improved 2nd half (or Exeter stopped trying) but to watch 4 and what could have been 7 or 8 goals in the first half hour without attempting to fix the issue is pretty pathetic management. But it s ok, its never happened to a Barton team before according to his interview. Exactly the point I was going to make. A good manager would have spotted the gaps after the 1st goal and may have tweaked it then or held on until the 2nd goal to react and make changes. Doing nothing at 2-0, 3-0 and 4-0, we got what we deserved.

I think it's fair to say 4-1 overall was flattering to them. However, two important bits.
- Exeter cashed in when had a great spell and killed the game. - We've just had a season where a number of results might have flattered the opposition but that ended in relegation. It is scant consolation.
Losing by 1, 2, 3 or 6 is not a huge issue. It's the huge moments we conceded, and so early. It's hard to forgive after 18 months of error prone football.
We seem a little "gun-ho." We need players who can play 5 minutes after conceding on a different level of alertness. Not necessarily rushing, or shutting up but taking the warning.

It was only flattering to them in the context that they put every chance they had in the net during the first twenty minutes. We actually had two very good chances with crosses that we just didnt reach. I ctuallt felt on twenty minutes that we were in for a 7-0 hammering at least, It was not entirely down to them being good rather that we were awful. there was no time between the first and second goal to change things mainly because you set out with a plan and on conceding one you are unlikely to change things as you set out to get the goal back. JB was as shaken by the start as were us supporters.despite a poor start to the season nobody could have expected us to implode in that way especially against a side that hadnt scored. At this level you will not get many games where the opposition score with each of their first four shots! Past history should have told us to be aware as however bad Exeter have been in the past they have usually beaten us at St James Park.

Actually heavy defeats do matter. Apart from the chronic impact on morale, a dreadful goal difference has an impact on league position. Currently our goal difference of -5 is the joint worst in the league.
We are currently conceding too many goals (10 in 4 games) and scoring very few (3 in 4 games). This is a replica of last season and that did not end well .....

I think these stats help us see things in a balanced light. Emotions on there own rarely help when making decisions. Need facts and emotion. Thanks for this Steve. Love your posts. 👍👍 We were losing 4-0 at half time after a shocking defensive display. We don't need to see things in a balanced light as the second half stats are meaningless in the context of the outcome of the game. It’s a results business, of course. The stats help to give us insight to build on. I’m sure Joey will learn from this. Onwards and upwards. We can win at Barrow and build again. Joey is on the ground breaking bus and will be until the end of October where we can take a more balanced not an emotional view on the way forward.

Surely the way to obtain balance in the absence of emotion is to look at the evidence? Like results for example.

The time to judge (and we need to always) is at end of October. Your early view may be right. We wait to see. I’ve a hunch that this team can bounce back and calm the dissenting voices on here. Hang in there, my friend.

Just out of interest what evidence do you have for your hunch? 😂Glad you are interested in my hunches. Great question. It’s an emotional feel - no facts just emotion clearly. It’s OK to have both.

The future is often about Hope. I still have it. Some have lost it. I understand that. I’ve lost it myself a few times. Not today though.
