I was trying to find some positives after Saturdays game which is very difficult but then I looked at the Stats for the match. Exeter - Possession 44% Rovers 56% Exeter Shots 19 Rovers 19 Exeter Shots on target 9 Rovers 9
Exeter Corners 3 Rovers 4
Exeter Fouls 7 Rovers 6
Looking at all the other games in the division only one other team managed 19 shots at goal and that was Forest Green and they won 6-3!! They had 11 shots on target to our and Exeters 9.
The real telling factor other than the result was the fouls count- 6 fouls committed in a 4-1 defeat indicates to me a lack of commitment and too goody goody though in some ways I suppose it is good that we do not appear to be a dirty side and tackle fairly although I think probably a more accurate assessment would be that particularly in the first 20 odd minutes we didn't get near enough to Exeter to commit a foul! I think over the 90 minutes their goalkeeper probably made more saves than ours as well.
I try to tell myself that we can't be that bad again as we were in the first 20 minutes but if I'm honest our defending was so bad that it is very likely to happen again if we don't get sorted out. My biggest worry when we signed Hughes was that we beat Accrington 4-0 last season and even in the game where we lost 6-1 it could have been 4-4 at half time and Hughes looked all over the place. It may be a case to give Kilgour a chance next game but then there is Baldwin who played well on Tuesday but was awful Saturday and IMO now he should be one of the ones to leave as there is no consistency in his game other than he makes a lot of stupid errors,
I am not convinced we can cut out the individual errors other than by giving the back three more support from the wing backs- will JB bring in a couple of out and out full backs this week to enable us to play a back four? Certainly I think it is a good ideal to have the players to enable you to change to four at the back, We do have Houle who has not done much wrong but the problem is that we appear to be totally set up to play with wing backs.
Anyway another plus was definitely the performance of hanlan when he came on and his partnership with Nicholson who got some more minutes also grant did well when played at the back- perhaps he could play as a full back?
If we learn from Saturday then maybe it was the kick up the ass that we needed, Maybe it will also trigger a bit more action in the transfer market that the Oldham win may have covered up- only time will tell.
I have my ticket for Barrow so can only hope for a vast overall improvement in our defensive work and surely similar stats to Saturday will see a better result.

How many shots were in the second half when the game was dead?

Stats mean nothing a lot of the time.
Exeter took their foot of the pedal in the second half. The half we had 12 shots and an average of 61% possession.
Stop trying to gloss over the fact that we are sh**.

Definitely worried about the lack of pace at the back. Perhaps Grant at RCB is the way to go (JB hinted this in his interview). But Coutts needs to show why we brought him in. Two awful appearances so far and no leadership AT ALL. I'd let Baldwin go if we can, too inconsistent and I'd rather we continued to develop Kilgour.

I think these stats help us see things in a balanced light. Emotions on there own rarely help when making decisions. Need facts and emotion. Thanks for this Steve. Love your posts. 👍👍

With regards to the keeper making more saves, of course he did, of 9 shots on target 4 of theirs went in and only 1 of ours did so he definitely made more saves but only 3 of any significance

Here's some proper stats. I'm tired of this fuzzy thinking and ridiculous straw clutching that is going on. We want hard facts, indisputable actuality. Here's a celebration from Saturday: What have we got. Jay, and number 20 and number 12. What could this mean, only one thing. J is for John, so John 20:12, which is a clear reference to the bible. If we look up John 20:12 we get "and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot." This is a clear reference to football (heading and kicking, obviously). Who might play in white, Leeds, of course. But let's not get carried way. Shrewsbury Away kit was white when Leon Clarke was there and also the seldom seen Hearts of Midlothian away kit was white when Glen Whelan was there. This is a clear reference to the two prospective players training with us. These stats prove beyond any doubt, I think we can all agree, that our 'saviours' will be Glen Whelan and Leon Clarke. I've practically proven it through the use of stats.

Interesting stats, but a team that can’t defend and can’t score is in deep trouble.
Those stats suggest we can’t do either.

It is not only the keeper who stops shots on target- they can be blocked by defenders. The three of significance could have been the difference between 1-4 and 4-4!! All four of their goals should have been prevented without the keeper making a save.

We are two players over the 20 limit at moment, to bring in two full backs and a striker means five have to go soon or we are paying people not to play. Others have said we need another central defender as well.
Of course we can bring in loads of U21 year old, but then will they be any better?

Saw a comment from an Exeter fan saying Rovers looked good going forward, but that’s no good when the defence parted like the Red Sea. What annoyed me was even before the first goal they were using their flanks to get behind us with ease & we were unable to change our system to cope with it.
