I don't see that, not at all. Take the loan player out of the picture and we might just be a poor L2 side. Then we have a couple of players at the very end of their careers. I see nothing much beyond that. If we go up, and with the players we have we should, then next season will be a real challenge (if they all leave) It's a double edged sword however,if used correctly can be very effective as it is with us this season,I have no knowledge but assume most teams in our league and above utilise the loan system,we have 3 playing regularly and my assumption is none of them will be here next year ,perhaps Connolly if we go up The advantage we have is that JB plays the loanees and has good connections further up the pyramid to get replacements we've not really been in that position before so I would believe they will be looking at replacements now or pretty soon depending on where we finish . In truth whilst not as drastic as last year there will be rebuilding with players out of contract and age etc. And of course it’s a sustainable way of doing it esp if the parent club pays a large % of the wages. Of course it’s better that we would own the players but given that the way the PL clubs now hoover up most of the young talent, loaning those players is a sensible way to supplement the squad. It’s very different from what it was 20 years ago, even 10 years ago. We probably get the youth players that, in this area, Southampton, City and others don’t want. And seeing that the Development Team seems to have almost disappeared then loaning top quality youth players who can hold their own in League 2 looks a very good way to go about it. Of course we may have to do it all again next year but that seems to be the way of a lower league club nowadays, every season. And I’m pretty sure JB said something along the lines of there “being plenty of players out there who want to play for BRFC.” That, in answer to the contract situations with Evans and Nicholson which he wasn’t worried about. The answer seems to be, get promoted and we won’t have as many problems as it will put us in a stronger position re these loaners!! Let’s hope so. UTG!

"Hughes was appointed manager of Stoke City on 30 May 2013. He guided the club to three consecutive ninth-place Premier League finishes in 2013–14, 2014–15 and 2015–16.” That hardly sounds the work of an awful manager, compared to the likes of McGhee and Buckle he's got a decent record, whether he can replicate that in L2 is another matter. He is lucky to have started his club career managing in the Premier league because of his record as a player and now he somehow finds himself managing in the lowest tier despite having that headstart. His last 3 jobs have seen him sacked with leaving teams in the relegation zone. QPR, Stoke and Southampton. Only Southampton ended up surviving the mess he left beind. His teams are also awful to watch. Stoke were already doing well before Hughes joined. Pulis did a fantastic job there and it was downhill after he left, they still haven't recovered since then IMO!
Do you think Hughes is a good manager then? Go on put your neck on the line Topper instead of deliberately opposing people's opinions to everything that you end up contradicting yourself constantly. Oh come on GGMI don’t be daft! Both Pulis and Hughes have very good managerial records, with some clubs there were more successful than with others. It happens. But on the highlighted bit of your post you are right Pulis did a fantastic job there. But so did Hughes, the 3 seasons 2013-16, as Topper has pointed out, they finished 9th. Hardly “all downhill” after Pulis is it? And as for the dig at Topper at the end, he doesn’t need me to stand up for him, but he’s made his view very plain so why have the dig? The way you continually seem to goad and antagonise him is totally unfair and unnecessary. UTG!

I do accept that this is true of most clubs but, having your playing squad overly reliant on loans whilst not developing any of your own talent (we appear to have given up on that) and at the same time losing £1M a year, in a ground not fit for purpose, doesn't feel very sustainable to me. Maybe it's just me, but painting Rosey pictures based upon half a season of decent results after relegation whilst ignoring all that's around you...well you reap what you sow. I enjoyed yesterday's game why wouldn't I. But looking around, listening to my fellow fans conversations, it did feel surreal.

That's not intentional by the way, that is me getting frustrated by someone who I feel always opposes things for the sake of it without fully committing themselves most of the time. When Hughes left Stoke they were in the relegation zone. It is obvious to me he just isn't a very good manager. I know it, Joey Barton knows it, 95% of footballing people know it. If he's that good why is he managing L2 Bradford City? Why have a Championship club or even a L1 club not taken him on?

I enjoyed yesterday's game why wouldn't I. But looking around, listening to my fellow fans conversations, it did feel surreal. Oldie, yes, that makes sense. I was commenting on the short term loans we have in relation to our team and the position we’re in. The financial implications of loans are mainly positive. The point about developing our own talent is right but we’ve found that increasingly hard to do over the years. It seems most of our young talent seems to go and join other clubs’ youth schemes before even appearing for us. It makes money for us without the fan base knowing too much about it. Especially when the club gives out 1 year or 2 year contracts with very few longer ones. I wasn’t commenting on the big-picture stuff about BRFC being sustainable in a stadium not fit for purpose. That seems pretty clear. And whilst appearing to be happy about how we are playing at the moment with a chance of a promotion challenge might, to you, be ignoring all that’s around us, is to me, the life of a supporter of a lower league club. We get our positives from how our team are playing and where they are in the table. I don’t think we’re ignoring it all, just enjoying a few months of decent football after such a period of crapness. I don’t quite know what I can do except enjoy the better parts of the journey. What do you reckon, from a fans viewpoint? UTG!

GGMI is still bitter after making a total fool of himself asking posters to start a petition to dismiss Barton now, just a few months later, he thinks he's an expert on football managers. I've no idea if Hughes will be a success at this level as it's a big a step down from the Premiership, however, fair play to him getting back into management rather than just sat criticising other managers on Sky/BT Sport.

Now that's what I call antagonistic! Like I said, that petition I asked people if they wanted him gone to start a petition. Not that I wanted to or started one myself! I was just trying to stir up a bit of heat on the forum at that time. Ha, Point proven Topper. Once again you are sitting on the fence after being argumentative for the sake of it.

Yes, of course he’s a decent manager. Silly to pretend otherwise looking at his record. UTG! warehamgas see above post and you might reconsider that opinion!. Good players do not always equal good managers. He’s a decent manager irrespective of whether you like him or not. You’re correct good players don’t always make good managers but I’ve never said that they did so not sure what your point was. But this thread is about our promotion challenge not Hughes so best leave it there, this is just deflection and distraction. Unfair on other posters. UTG!

I enjoyed yesterday's game why wouldn't I. But looking around, listening to my fellow fans conversations, it did feel surreal. I have always been a firm believer that younger players will only get chance to improve sufficiently by being involved in the first team, either starting or coming off the bench regularly. I wonder what standard Hoole would have been at right now in comparison had he been playing for Taunton Town on loan? Although Exeter have a great youth system, they generally work with smaller squads on a lower budget and with lower expectations, so it's an easier decision to play 16/17 year olds and they they usually reap the benefits blooding them early. Ollie Watkins wasn't outstanding from day 1, he was in and out of the first team and made sub appearances until he started to shine. What chance have our own youngsters got when the likes of Sion Spence can't get a look-in? I've never liked the loan system; the thought of 'borrowing' other teams players, most you never have any chance of signing, just makes league tables farcical for me. I accept loans have always been part of the game but it turns the advantage to which contacts you have in the game rather than who has the best squad of their owned players. It's even more farcical these days when a parent club recalls their player in Jan, and loans him back out to another club in the same division!!

Colchester (H) Win Northampton (A) Draw Carlisle (A) Draw Bradford (H) Win Tranmere (A) Loss Salford (H) Win Port Vale (A) Draw Forest Green (H) Draw Rochdale (A) Win Scunthorpe (H) Win
19 points out of 30 putting us on 76. Enough for automatics? Unlikely. Would take us into the playoffs though for sure.

True story. I bet £50 and us winning the league at the start of the season. About 5/6 weeks ago we were about 22/4 points behind Forest Green and I think they had a couple of games in hand also . So naturally I thought …..this ain’t happening lads. Went on Skybet they were still offering me 29p cash out , so I took it and put on a accumulator…. and lost .
Sort of regretting it now 😂

11-1 on PP for a top 3 finish. Could be worth a cheeky tonne Could be worth it. I put £100 on Rovers being in play offs a few months back at 14-1. It was the first time I’ve felt so confident in years. Feel even more confident now. Saw the top three odds. Look good to me. I see champions bet is 200-1. Now there’s ground breaking right there.
