Greetings one and all.
Having just joined the forum afetr years of 'lurking' made me think back to my first game and the reasons for my allegiance to the blue side of Bristol.
Having left Birmingham at the tender age of 8 in the late 60s to relocate to sunny Weston, I remained a Birmingham City fan for the next 6 years despite kids at school trying to beat it out of me.
Sad to report but I was actually taken to a City game first (child cruelty) but I think I fell asleep as it was so quiet and peaceful.
First Rovers game was against Villa in September 1974. All of the ingredients were there for me to make that switch to supporting a 'local' team. Rovers played in blue (like my beloved Birmingham) and were playing against the arch enemy Villa. Rovers won 2-0 against a Villa team that went on to win promotion that season. That result, combined with the style of play and fantastic atmosphere in the Tote, made me want to commit the rest of my life to supporting the blue and white quarters.
I found a video of the game and the quality and pace of the football on show still stands the test of time. Apologies for the half time adverts featuring poor taste in 70s fashion and even poorer taste in TV celebraties advertising road safety (I think you know of whom I speak).
Enjoy the watch if you are feeling nostalgic or if you just want to see what tackes you could get away with back in the day! UTG.

My first match was a biggie - Vs Huddersfield at the old Wembley.
Didn’t make it to a home game until we had moved into the Mem though.

September 1966 - Rovers v. Swindon. Won 3-0. Sat in the South Stand, aged 6, with my cousin and grandfather. Remember the roars from around us as the goals went in. Hooked from that day onwards.

Enjoyed watching that. Brought back some great memories of Eastville.

Good stuff! excruciating commentary from Roger! referring to 'Bristol' all the time among other annoying traits! well remember some great tier 3 battles in league and league cup v Villa!

Also Eastville v Forest 10 Sept 1955 where we won 4-1.Dad took me to Ashton the previous week v Swansea but there was no soul there so no contest for me. Incidentally Forest fans hate it when they are called 'NOTTS' as that is County and they are Nottingham Forest.

That was my first game as well. I was 10. I went with my big brother and stood north enclosure side of the tote. An oldish guy rang a bloody bell all match.

Agreed - shows a lack of respect for the history and tradition of a club.
However, I do like the fact that we now seem to be just called 'The Gas' on Quest. Perhaps we should consider a name change.

We would probably be cancelled as it’s not an environmentally responsible name! 😉

Sometime around 72/73, must have been the south stand. I remember looking at flower beds and a tatty old rabbit on the greyhound track. I could hardly see the game as surrounded by grown men and the smell of fags and booze. But the atmosphere got me,looking at a full tote end and trying to understand what they were singing,I actually remember being at one game in the promotion year when twenty thousand was normal, talk about missed opportunities with eastville.

PS: Flower beds and a tatty old rabbit - sounds like my garden (and we don't even own a rabbit)
