My take is that I think it’s fantastic the increase in awareness and promotion of the women’s game and long may it continue…
I took both my daughters to watch the gas last season and my youngest is obsessed wanting to go home and away every week…. my older daughter less so but she still enjoyed the games and has taken more of an interest…
If you look at the crowd at the Mem certainly as last season went on, there were more and more women and children attending and that has continued this season…
I’ve watched a few Gas Girls games and the standard is really good and what I appreciate is that generally you don’t get any of the stupid feigning of injuries or ‘dark arts’ that you see in the mens game. You get fouls and crunching tackles but the women just get up and carry on…
The stereo typing of women don’t like football is rubbish as yes some women don’t like football but guess what, the same applies to men…
The main reason the women’s game is less well known or supported is because of a lower investment from sponsorship, lower promotion in mainstream media and marketing etc that has been the case for decades (whereas go to America and the women’s game is huge) but it’s changing and improving and rightfully so…
Come watch the Gas Girls at Lockleaze and you’ll see what a great team they are

There was a couple of 'experts' banging on about putting lots of money into the WSL. No no no. Granted a lot of money has been spent but focus needs to be on grassroots, if enough youngsters are interested the cream of the crop will make their way to the top. Just focusing on WSL could result in it just ending up like the premiership. English talent on the sidelines with highly paid players getting the games. That's a very general view but you get my point I know a Chairman of a local grassroots team (Boys). He tells me that the FA are throwing money at Girls grassroots and encouraging these clubs, provided that they are a FA Chartered to sign register and form Girls squads from the same age groups. Leagues are beginning to appear. I very rarely defend the FA, because I think they have been bullied by the Premier League and don’t often show some Bo””&?s, plus that make some horrific decisions. But I will defend their desire at Grassroots teams with funding and Grants for Kit, Balls, goal nets, subs, basically everything you need to set up a Girls team but funded. This has only happened in the last few seasons. My eldest lads grassroots club now has 3 Girls teams in the last 5 years since he left the club at 16. My youngest club is doing the same. It’s just down to the club I guess, but from what my mate says it is currently self funding / profit making if you jump on quick.
