I understand cancelling events for the funeral, but we can’t sit around doing nothing for 10 days.

I understand cancelling events for the funeral, but we can’t sit around doing nothing for 10 days. Probably will have to go to work/school etc and just cancel the fun stuff. How can you say to children you have to go to School, but you can't go to football. You either cancel it all, or nothing imo

Depends upon the public mood whether games are on this weekend according to the FA
PS Friday’s games are definitely off.

Slightly off subject, but the Brighton v Palace game on Saturday week has already been called off because of the bloody rail strike! Wasn't the Brighton ground built with minimal parking in the area, so that the majority of fans would come in by rail? I don't think there are many other travel options available, and would be a big crowd as it's a sort of "derby" game.

Out of respect think it all should be cancelled, sometimes things happen which are more important than football,RIP your majesty.

Apparently the premier league games are called off, so I expect the EFL to follow suit.

It would be my first game of the season on Saturday so would be a bit gutted if it’s off!
Understand why though and can’t say I disagree with it

Not for me Clive, what’s disrespectful about cracking on even with tributes and moments of silence before matches? Fully expecting them to sack it all off mind.

Apparently there was a one-minute silence held at The Den in November 1925 prior to Rovers’ goalless draw with Millwall, as Alexandra, the Queen Mother and widow of Edward VII had died the previous day. Likewise, before the 1-1 draw at Southend in January 1936, a one-minute silence was held to the memory of King George V and before the 3-3 draw with Orient in February 1952 there was a one-minute silence for King George VI. Thirteen months later, there was a further one-minute silence, as Queen Mary, the widow of George V, had died four days before Rovers’ home victory over Bournemouth. But looks like the sad passing of Queen Elizabeth will result in sporting fixtures being postponed this weekend.

The English Football League has also postponed its two games on Friday. "A determination regarding the remainder of this weekend's scheduled fixtures will be made following a review of the official mourning guidance, in addition to further consultation with DCMS and other sports on Friday morning," said an EFL statement. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/62840622

Totally agree that this has been a historic and very sad day for the country but I don’t think sport continuing over the weekend would be making a statement that it is more important than the passing of a monarch or in any way disrespectful towards the royal family. Sport can show its respect in other ways like a two minute silence, black arm bands, wreaths placed, replacing electronic advertising with messages of condolence etc… When all other areas of everyday life will continue I don’t see why sport needs to be singled out and cancelled. There is enough doom and gloom around at the moment without making people more miserable. Let the public decide whether they as individuals wish to watch sport or sit indoors mourning. Regardless of what I think all sports will be probably be cancelled this weekend, not necessarily because the organisers genuinely believe that it’s the right thing to do but because they are paranoid about getting it wrong and and so will be erring on the side of caution. The day of the funeral should be different though - imo.

Surely it’s better for the people to be seen coming together at sporting events with a minutes silence rather than nothing? Or are they afraid it won’t be respected by some?

I’m not sure whether there are official protocols and as far as I can see sports are likely to make their own decisions and probably liaise and be consistent in cancelling. The queen was a fan of sports, particularly racing as we all know so would she have wanted everything cancelled? She was involved in many major sporting occasions. Who handed Bobby Moore the Jules Rimet Trophy, who handed Stanley Matthews his long awaited cup final medal, who gave Virginia Wade her Wimbledon trophy and played a part in the Olympic opening ceremony.? The Royals know the importance of sport to the nation. Princess Anne, Harry and William have been presidents/patrons of governing bodies.
Sport carrying on isn’t disrespectful and shouldn’t be cancelled. The nation doesn’t need its mood lowered any more than it has to.

Out of respect think it all should be cancelled, sometimes things happen which are more important than football,RIP your majesty. What do you mean by all tho? And for how long? Shops pubs take aways tv stations? Bet the golf courses remain open. Stupid country some times. Let people mourn the way they want and pay respect at public events. Now up and down the country kids will be stuck at home playing Xbox rather that playing or watching with their mates and giving respect together. Ridiculous.

Honestly think it’s pretty silly to cancel this weekends games.
Nightclubs, pubs etc will be open. Plenty of people drunk in the city centre come midnight.
Yet god forbid a football gets knocked about. 🤷♀️

Keep the games on and pay respects at the games IMO. I'll pay my respects at MK Dons, would be thumb twiddling or up the pub if it's off. Football authorities will probably be worried about offending people if the games stay on even if the offended are in the small minority. Pay respects in your own way rather than be told how to. The day of the funeral should be the national day of mourning. Wasn't that long ago that she lost her husband and was back to work 4 days later

The likes of the FA and BBC are scared stiff of them. So they will be off and we all lose out, whilst they play golf and drink in their private members clubs.
