Can someone help me with the name of that useless striker DC signed to replace Taylor?? Was just talking about him and can’t for the life of me remember his damn name!! Stefan Payne? Tbf to DC on paper I thought it was a good replacement at the time, both scored 14 goals the previous season and Shrewsbury made the playoffs with him didn’t they? Just shows that “on paper” rarely means much

Will forever be a club legend but it never works second time around in football. I get the love in for DC but not the obsession for him to come back.

Blimey DC signed some awful strikers in L1, Nichols, Payne, James and Bennett. Yes he did and you could add some more to the list from the non league season. But fortunately he also signed Matt Taylor who despite how it ended up was the answer to what we needed for those 2 and a half seasons. So overall I think DC was just ahead. And going into League 1 DC experienced the same problem every manager since Trolls had in failing to get the better League 1 strikers. (With the exception of Lambert and Hoskins obviously.) UTG!

I remember that, the players wanted him to take it - you just knew that he was going to miss.

Blimey DC signed some awful strikers in L1, Nichols, Payne, James and Bennett. Factually speaking Kyle Bennett wasn't a 'striker' and Luke James was on loan. DC a far superior person to Barton, however Barton is at a disadvantage due to being a scouser.

Saw him a few years earlier when he was 18 and he scored twice for Hartlepool in a 2-2 draw (I think) in our first home game of that season. He looked an amazing prospect and earned a big money move to Peterborough if I remember rightly. He suffered a cruciate injury and was never the same. Quite sad really. Edit: Wiki suggests it was a loan. My memory is fading!

I remember that, the players wanted him to take it - you just knew that he was going to miss. Couldn’t fault his effort and commitment but he is living proof that it takes more than hard work alone, most of all as a striker, I’ve always said if a striker does absolutely nothing for 89 minutes but scores a goal he’s done his job 🤷🏻♂️ Nichols was a very good football and contributed a lot on the pitch, but I’d trade every good he did for goals ya know As a side note I hope you’re doing well tilly, everybody is praying for you x

Speaking of loan strikers every one he signed was rubbish, did any of them ever score a goal in the non league season? Got a few from Cunnington and Gaffney the following season at least haha

As you say, as nice lad, and I would liked to have seen him do well for us.

Enjoyed decent spells elsewhere after us as well, including playing in league one with Plymouth. I’d say that’s a successful career for a footballer by most standards and good luck to him.

Agree, whilst he didn’t set the world alight he scored a few and got a lot of game time in a team never really seemed to drop points. The Plymouth move was unexpected but was happy for the guy, to this day still has time for the gas/fans on Twitter

Sorry, I didn't word it very well - I meant that I would have liked him to have gone on and become one of our scoring legends. He certainly did play his part re. promotion points.
