In this transfer window, they have already signed Mark Little from the Posh and Luke Ayling from Yeovil who are both right backs. I can't see them signing another one personally...

PETERBOROUGH United look to have cooled their interest in Bristol Rovers defender Michael Smith after making a move for Swindon Town right-back Nathan Thompson. The Post understands Peterborough were the club that tabled a bid that prompted Smith, who has a year left to run on his contract, to submit a written transfer request earlier this week. Manager Darrell Clarke has since confirmed the offer was rejected and that Smith would remain at the Memorial Stadium until the club in question tabled a bid that matched Rovers' valuation of the highly-rated 25-year-old. Peterborough are in the market for a right-back after losing Mark Little and Craig Alcock over the summer, but chairman Darragh MacAnthony yesterday warned they would not be "rushing in" and "paying over the odds" for any of their remaining transfer targets. Young Manchester City full-back Adam Drury is on trial with a view to a loan move and was scheduled to feature in a pre-season friendly in Portugal last night – but a campaigner with some lower-league experience also appears to be on their radar following reports that a bid of about £200,000 for Thompson was rejected by Swindon yesterday. Smith sat out Rovers' pre-season friendly defeat at the hands of Cheltenham Town on Tuesday night because of a minor knee problem and may also miss the game against Bath City at Twerton Park on Saturday. www.bristolpost.co.uk/Peterborough-look-cooled-Bristol-Rovers-defender/story-21649101-detail/story.html

Fed up of clubs trotting out the "minor injury" excuse, when they're actually keeping a player intact because he's going to be sold.

Update: Bristol Rovers defender Michael Smith on the verge of Peterborough United switch
Defender Michael Smith is almost certain to leave the Memorial Stadium in the coming days after Bristol Rovers accepted a new and improved offer from Peterborough United. Smith, 26, was last week compelled to submit a transfer request after a first offer for the right-back was rejected out of hand and then Peterborough looked to have turned their attentions elsewhere when tabling a bid for Swindon Town right-back Nathan Thompson. Rovers boss Darrell Clarke, however, was last night forced to omit Smith from the squad that continued the pre-season programme with a 2-0 defeat at Yeovil Town after Peterborough came back with a better offer on Monday. Rovers chairman Nick Higgs last night confirmed that Smith is likely to leave in the next week or so and the Post understands that all that remains to be agreed before the player makes the switch to London Road are how the deal is to be structured and the nature of the add-ons. Higgs said: “We are in detailed discussions with Peterborough United and it looks very much like Michael Smith will be on his way in the next week or so. “We haven’t quite finalised all the details and I will reiterate again that Michael will be going nowhere if we do not get the deal that we want. “We haven’t got a problem with Michael’s attitude because he has shown himself to be a thoroughly professional member of the squad and will give us 100 per cent until any deal is completed.” Smith, who has a year left on his current deal, has attracted the interest of a host of clubs after being named in the League Two team of the year and had been offered a new and improved contract by the Rovers in a bid to persuade him to stay at the Memorial Stadium. The full-back’s departure will leave manager Darrell Clarke looking to the transfer market for a replacement on top of the ‘two or three’ players he believes he already needs before his squad is ready to begin life outside the Football League against Grimsby Town at the Memorial Stadium on August 9. www.bristolpost.co.uk/Bristol-Rovers-defender-Michael-Smith-verge/story-21742779-detail/story.html

I'm guessing the only reason Higgins hasn't yet put pen to paper is that we are waiting for Smudger to go. Hopefully it means Darrell can stop having to scrimp and save and actually get the players he wants.

Wish they would lose him already. He wants to leave and even a perfect attitude is going to waver eventually. Agree a fee and move on. Id rather we dealt with it now than in January.
Great player, great attitude but wants out. Get rid.

I agree Ras, even if we have to lose a little in transfer fees.
Is clear this deal is holding up at least 2 or 3 others.

Great player, great attitude but wants out. Get rid. Can't agree with that at all mate. We've got Higgins lined up already, Turley all but signed. We have no reason to wish to push it through. We stand by our valuation, and should not change that. Don't let them take us for granted.
