Winchester City’s hotshot striker Warren Bentley has admitted he wants to play at a higher level of football and isn’t sure his future lies with Winchester City.
The 24-year-old has hit the headlines this season, as he is on course to break the 50 goal in all competitions, in his first season back at the Denplan City Ground, following his arrival from Alresford Town in the summer.
Last season Bentley hit an astonishing 58 goals and his form in the Wessex Premier League has surely not gone unnoticed by higher Conference clubs.
And speaking to WINOL, the forward, who is a full time PE teacher, says that he still holds out hope of playing in a higher division and furthering his career.
“I would like to play higher, there’s no secret about that and we’ve had that discussion and I’m sure most of the team would like to play higher.
“We’ve played against a few Conference South sides this year and the club’s done itself no harm in any of those games and I think I’ve proven to myself more than anyone, that I can play at that standard. I believe I can make that step up.
“It’s whether the club can progress at the same rate as myself to be honest. David [Malone, director of football] set out the ambitions of the club and not surprisingly he is ambitious and wants the club to go places and I believe it can.”
Bentley, who was born in Winchester and came through the club’s youth team before departing, isn’t going to be rushed over his immediate future, but hasn’t ruled out the possibility of staying with his hometown club.
“I don’t really like to set myself long-term targets. What I learned from last summer is to take each decision as it comes and whether that’s here [at Winchester City] or elsewhere, that decision’s not made at the moment and I don’t really like to make that decision during the season.
“It could well be here next season and the future too.”

IF this proves to be correct, then this is exactly the sort of signing that really excites me!
So many quality players have started by banging in silly amounts of goals at very low levels (Austin, Gayle etc)..
Have to wait and see I guess...

I'd rather we took a punt on a lower league striker who's hungry for the game rather than a sub 20 year old who comes in on a months loan just to sit on the bench.
Clarke failed with his gamble on Jamie white last year and he moved him on rather rapidly. He's shown he's willing to do it and I don't see why he wouldn't again.

The signing of white certainly didn't pay off and I think the same could be said for Blissett, who in my opinion will not make the grade. He did however play a small part in our promotion.
It is a gamble signing a player from part time non league football but as others have said, if you get it right (Hayles, Ellington, Austin, Gayle etc) then it can pay off big time.
Anyone know what type of striker Bentley is? Goal poacher, target man etc.

I ain't falling for that post. A 2 year deal for a player not even proven in the conference? Can't see DC offering that and even if did it wouldn't be worth Bentley leaving his teaching post for.

Plus he would take a while to get fit and up to speed for league football, surely? DC will want a player who can make an impact straight away I'd have thought. I call BS.

To be fair a 2 year deal probably isn't a bad idea for this sort of player. The lad would be on minimal wages and the second year covers the clubs return on him if he keeps his striking form up and commands a big transfer fee at the end of the season.

Don't think it's legit guys Surely there's been far too many wild rumours over the years for anyone to believe anything until its officially confirmed.

Bentley has turned down the deal (he wanted three years) and has elected to joint Havant.

No he was named but there was someone named "trialist" and McNamara said he was a non league striker, but could not name him? i thought it was obviously to fend off other clubs interest.

Not with Rovers! Nobody genuinely had a clue who he was!
