Lanyone ever solve a problem like John-Joe O'Toole? The former Bristol Rovers midfielder's career at Northampton Town appears to be in more doubt than ever after manager Chris Wilder today responded to claims from O'Toole that he was playing for a move after being told by the manager that he did not feature in his plans and could do nothing to change his mind
In a candid interview for Northampton Town's YouTube channel, Wilder said that he had not signed O'Toole, who is currently transfer-listed, on "good money" with the intention of having him sat in the stands but that he had "underperformed" and "had to look at himself first" for the reasons that have led to him falling out of favour.
O'Toole, who was always a decent, honest and affable chap in any dealings he had with the Post, scored 16 goals in 48 appearances for Rovers before falling out with supporters over an article that was published in an Irish newspaper on the morning of the day Rovers were relegated in 2014 - even though the interview had taken place some three weeks earlier.
He triggered a release clause in his contract and joined Northampton Town soon afterwards and received a hostile reception on his first return to the Memorial Stadium with his new club on the opening day of the current season. He scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 win but refused to taunt those who had abused him and said afterwards: "I got a bit of stick, but it wasn't anything that I wasn't expecting in all honesty.
"I said it when I left and I'll say it again, leaving the club was the hardest career decision I have ever had to make. The fans didn't see that decision through my eyes and that is fair enough. I got on really well with them when I was here and I have a lot of respect for them.
"It felt strange coming back here for the first time because whatever the fans here think of me now I did really enjoy my time playing for the club. The last time I was here was definitely the worst day of my football career and possibly one of the worst days of my life. To go down in the fashion we did was horrible and it is something that still haunts me today. My time at the club didn't end well, but there are good people here and even though I got a bit of stick today I wouldn't bad mouth anybody here at all."
Will O'Toole ever fulfill his undoubt potential

I think it will spell the end of JJ. Even if he took a huge pay cut, who would want this bad apple near there team. My drive needs tar-macing if he gets desperate.

I reckon he's just what we could do with. His interview didn't go down very well because he spoke honestly about his ambition. It wasn't his fault that he joined a team of losers. 14 goals in that team is admirable.

Good player, possibly (when he felt like it) Good enough to pick a team around (very rarely) Therefore when we picked a team around him (which JW did too often), the team did badly nine times out of ten and he shone (maybe one in five) when he could be bothered.

He got quite a few MoMs. Our team were unstable and mentally weak. JW didn't have his heart in it either for his own reasons. Our side now could accommodate JJ easily and imo would be stronger for it. He is tough, scores goals, box to box, strong in the air, good on the ball. All we needed was a Chris Lines and a Beard next to him.

Massive ego, limited talent and a total Special lady garden. Just my opinion of course

I liked him.Not as effective as he was in his loan spell here because he was played further forward, hence the amount of goals he scored.Still way better than all the midfield players we had at that time though.2 appearances and 2 goals this season I think, there will always be managers prepared to take a risk when taking on players with an attitude as they will see themselves as the ones to "sort his head out",he will get another league2 club or better simply because he has easily enough ability to do well at that level.

He's a good player. Unlike many, I thought there were games when he was the only one fighting for the cause in that fateful season. Unfortunately, he became disillusioned towards the end, but then he was playing with Beardsley, Bond and co. Would I have him back? Nope. Do I blame him for our relegation? Nope. Without his 15 goals, we would have been dead and buried by Easter. The timing of the interview with the Irish press was poor. He probably didn't mean it in the way it was portrayed in the article, but that's a journo's job - to create a story. Even so, he should have kept his mouth shut.

I f*cking loved him and I'd have him back here like a shot. When was the last time we had a tall, strong, aggressive central midfielder who could score goals with his feet and his head. For that matter how many central midfielders are there with those qualities below Championship level? He was our talisman for a while. 15 goals he got in that team, and we had some abominably bad players. Was he a bit of a kn*b at times? Yes. Does everybody wish he hadn't done that interview? Yes. Ultimately we were a better side with him in it and we'd be a better side with him in it now.

I could have got Man Of The Match a few times if I'd started as many Rovers games that season as he did....yes the team were unstable and mentally weak, no argument from me there, but if he's half the player he thinks he is he could have actually helped those around him, and I suspect he effectively hindered a lot of them. Our side now *could* accommodate him, not sure the manager, players or a large chunk of the fanbase would though...

In most of his games once he signed permanent he was one of our worst players, in 13 of those games he scored which often won him the man of match award covering up the fact he just really wasn't very good at anything other than chipping in with a few goals.
