I wouldn't want us to lose our Pirate identity. It's a link to Bristol's history and a big draw for kids in particular. A lot of clubs would kill to have a nickname with such a strong identity and marketability. I've always felt we could be doing a lot more with it, the badge included. Sorry I totally disagree with that, even when we were kids we never referred to Rovers as the Pirates.
As for Bristols history theres loads of things that I would associate with Bristol before I thought of Pirates, in fact does anyone think 'Bristol..oh yes pirates' ?
I wonder how many people don't buy club merchandise because its got the Pirate badge on it ? probably not many on here but I bet quite a percentage of all Rovers supporters.
Time to get rid of the old boards Pirate badge and find something better.
If you see 50s footage of Rovers vs City games the Rovers mascot is dressed as a pirate. Just because we have since acquired a second unique nickname, is no reason to ditch the previous, also unique, nickname. Bristol has a long standing association with piracy, eg Blackbeard, and even the word 'rover', was originally a term applied to a pirate. In effect, we are already called Bristol Pirates. One of the criticisms of the previous regime was its inability to make use of our USPs - to lose the pirate nickname and image, is to my mind anyway, madness. Why have one unique selling point when you can, and already do have, two?

I agree, I think most really like our badge. I think it's great. I'm not so sure, I think most actually don't. Just the feeling I have always had. I much preferred our last badge. The last one looked like something that was cooked up in 2 minutes in windows 95.

I agree that Bristol doesn't automatically scream "pirates", but you really think a large numbers of supporters wouldn't buy the merchandise *because* it has the pirate on it? I would find that very hard to believe. It's hardly abhorrent is it, even if it's not exactly your cup of tea! Purely speculation and guesswork of course, but my personal view is that more people would be put off from buying something with a skull & cross bones on it than a silhoulette of a pirate. What would you rather have on the badge that brings the "Bristol" element to it? I can only speak for myself about not buying club merchandise with the Pirate on (although I have bought a few things from Retro Rover ) I have noticed though that out of all the Rovers supporters that I know as friends only one person wears a small lapel badge with the Pirate. When you say abhorrent,I would group the badge with Crocs, onesies or shell suits, something that I wouldn't want to own.
I am not sure about the skull and crossbones either, although several of my mates had Rovers tattoos done in the 70s with skull and crossbones.
The 'Bristol' element ? well city have got the Suspension bridge, thats probably the most iconic Bristol image...I quite like the Bristol crest that Rovers had in the 60s early 70s, I do like the simplicity of the Sankt Pauli badge so maybe a Rovers version of that with a Gasometer in the middle ?.

What about the Young Pirates, Crossed Swords clothing (which I know is separate from the club) and many other things we have associated with our current nickname? For me it would be madness to change it. What would you even change it to out of interest?

I have to say those Crossed Swords always remind me of the hat badge in F Troop..but to be fair some people buy the stuff, they obviously don't like the current pirate either.

Knocked this up, this is the sort of thing I had in mind. Quite simple, clean and I don't think that pirate looks corny at all. Just my opinion of course. That is THE worst attempt I've seen for a Rovers badge. Are you on a Friday afternoon wind up?

Our current badge is too camp. We need something more manly like this......

Personally I really like the pirate logo and it looks very impressive on merchandise. It is unique. Probably one of the reasons Wael bought the club!

Which surely suggests that City don't have a mascot image worthy of the name, whilst we do. The quartered shirts, something else unique to Rovers (I don't count Wycombe), date from the thirties, but no one suggests they are 'old hat'.

Any change is clearly going to be controversial as opinion is obviously very split!
FWIW I love our badge and don't see the pirate as camp. The 90s badge was very, well, 90s and was fine for that era.
I have to say I don't identify with the pirate or skull and cross bones at all. If we dropped it it would be of no consequence to me. I think the Gas nickname is far more unique and more should be made of it officially.

How about something like this classy effort from Newell's Old Boys? Just change the word to "GAS" and have blue and white quarters in the background. Thank god you said change the word to GAS. I don't care about OTIB but that would just have been loading their gun for them!

But surely the crossed swords is pirate related!
