The key for me is keeping a winning mentality. That comes from keeping the bulk of the squad together. Half the mission in sport is getting the monkey off your shoulder. DC has done that with our awful away form and also managed to turn the home form around after a few months of last season. When you look at the breaking of the 4 minute mile by Roger Bannister, people thought it impossible to break 4 minutes to the point that a human heart would explode running that fast! The record had stood at 4.01 for over 10 years with athletes conceding that it was impossible to break. Bannisters coach got in his head and helped him visualise what was needed to run under 4 mins and in rubbish weather conditions he managed to break it after having the belief instilled. After years of trying and hundreds failing the barrier had been breeched. Within months an Australian smashed Bannisters new record. Psychologically the monkey had been removed and athletes now believed it possible. within another 18 months several runners broke the 4 minutes and is now clearly a regular occurrence. Of course women will never break 4 mins as its impossible! My point is is that its clear that we have a squad of winners. Any new addition will have to buy into the clubs philosophy, forgetting any illusions of grandeur. DC does the right thing. He finds players that have been told they are not good enough. That its impossible for them to play at this standard. Either its him, or someone on the coaching staff is getting in their heads and removing the boundaries others have instilled through their negativity. We have seen the results with the likes of Taylor, leads, Bodin etc etc. Collectively, we can be as good as anyone in this league and unlike most, we will not have to wait a couple of months for the squad to gel. They will hit the ground running.

My only gripe really is the mention of the date when the window shuts as I feel strongly that you should be preparing to have your team ready for the FIRST game. DC has had all the summer to make the signings and we are now moving into the friendlies where IMO he should be fielding nearly his first choice team and see them playing TOGETHER not split up and all over the place. I was not expecting money to be splashed everywhere to show our new found wealth but at least some signs of it by signing some players with experience and qualities we were missing when we played some of our tougher matches. Physical strength in the midfield area, a top notch striker at League 1 level and a central midfielder who actually scores goals plus a goalkeeper who is on the right side of 30 to challenge Mildenhall. I believe that Hartley and Moore are both good signings but we really need three more at the very least. As regards consolidation whilst it sounds sensible in practice it will not cause two important things 1) The need to continue growing and using the advantage which our success has brought- success can breed success because it can come with momentum ie Burton. 2) The need to continue to grow support- whilst some are saying consolidation will be great experience shows that consolidation will not bring in the crowds and it doesn't take a lot for fickle fans to stay away and a poor start to the season will soon see crowds down to 6500 whereas with a few more new signings BEFORE the first game will see us sell out at Scunthorpe and be over 10,000 for the first home game. Unfortunately this game revolves around success and that means chasing the top prizes in League 1.

stevek, just to take your goalkeeper as an example. Top quality goalies will be available on August 20 who were not available on July 20 and June 20. But you would have bought (have you still not understood that we are NOT going to splash the cash?) any goalkeeper available then (a castoff basically) just to have him in the squad early. Goalies are being pushed down their clubs' pecking order as the weeks go by and will want a move....I'm talking Championship 2nd/3rd choice keepers here... after being displaced by better imports from above them. Just this week Owls, Canaries and Cottagers have imported keepers. It's about patience and timing. Same applies to outfield players (see Oxford).

Very good point regarding GKs to be honest - that does make sense.

Just this week Owls, Canaries and Cottagers have imported keepers. It's about patience and timing. Same applies to outfield players (see Oxford). As above. Not all the players are available early. You need someone at the top (or a better team or whatever you want to call it) to improve a position so that someone else is dislodged and becomes available. That might be 2 or three divisions above us and therefore players get filtered down the leagues. Also some of the better players may decide that they can still keep their place as the preferred player for that club in that position. But late in the window they see that they cannot and need/want a move. It's difficult to force a better player down the leagues. He will obviously look for the next best option - we might not be that!? We could be second choice, but we would still benefit from a better player. Stevek192 - your match reports are brilliant, but you really don't cut DC any slack with player recruitment do you?! Which is fair, that's what we want to see... However, there is so much that I /we don't know about when it comes to approaching players and getting the deal done that we could well have been expecting someone in the door by now but we won't give him the number 5 shirt or something? Anyway, it's all good debate...

That was made pretty clear right from the off. Let's take it slow, buy the right players at the right price, take it from there.
