I don't get what the butt itch is? DC said end of August and it's 2nd August. When you were a kid and you were told that Christmas was at the end of December did you start saying to your mum "When will these Christmas elves and Reindeer materialise"? on 2nd December? As I've already pointed out, I haven't heard all of the interviews and hadn't realised that DC said the end of August. He didn't exactly say I'm going to make signings at the end of August. He basically said he wants to bring in 2 or 3 quality players but he won't panic buy because he has until the end of August. That's the way I interpreted it anyway. I'm sure if he'd found the right player he'd have signed him already so the Christmas comparison isn't really fair. You can't bring Christmas forward but Clarke will no doubt bring those players in as soon as possible. If indeed it is possible, Christmas might never come.

i think there is a basic need to give the team that got us promoted a fair crack at league one. simply put if we had 6 new players in the starting 11 that fantastic spirit that helped us get promoted would not exist as many players would feel deflated. also i wish people would say which players from the likely starting 11 they want removed?

GK - Don't think either Puddy or Mildenhall are good enough. CB - Someone to offer serious competition to Lockyer & Hartley. Don't mind Clarke or McChrystal but I doubt either will be challenging for a first team spot this season. CM - A creative, quick and preferably goal scoring midfielder to challnege Lines for his place in the team. So I only want to see a change in goal. The other signings are to offer serious competition to players we already have.

Portsmouth signed Carl Baker, Walsall signed Erhun Oztumer and Charlton signed Lee Novak - All fit this criteria and all signed while we were twiddling our thumbs.
All the known decent players have been signed, time to unearth some more hidden gems.

What's to say DC didn't talk to and/or make an offer to any of those players and we simply lost out to the other club?

Maybe, although id be worried about losing out to a L2 side and Walsall, although Pompey do seem to offer generous wages.
Any of those 3 would walk into our midfield imo, then again I pay to watch games and DC doesn't so I guess that says it all.

Tbf, we know Pompey have cash (spent it like it was going out of fashion last summer) and Walsall broke their transfer record a few days back to bring in a player. Also, Novak is a striker. Anyway, my point is we have no idea what's going on behind the scenes. All we hear about is when we do sign someone, not the countless number of attempted signings that fail to materialise.

how many times have you watched these players play? Not many as they have all been playing regularly at a higher level than us.

what was our managers opinion of these 3 players? Ask him. Like I said its just my opinion, whether or not we could have got them who knows but the better players seem to have been snapped up early doors.

I remember when we snapped up Adam Drury "early doors" he was gone before the season started! As for the better players having already been snapped up...who moved on the 18th of August? And who moved on transfer deadline day of 31st August 2016? You don't know yet ! To my mind the four that arrived in league one on Aug 2nd (McCann, Rudd, Aneke and Binnom-Williams) have just as much quality about them as the three you picked out....so the decent deals are still out there...if DC wants someone and they're available at a price acceptable to us then it will happen...unless they have an aversion to the West Country or fail their medical of course!!

Just had a look at our starting lineups for the start of the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons:
2014/15
Mildenhall
Leadbitter, Lockyer, Parkes, McCrystal, Brown
Mansell, Sinclair, Monkhouse
Brunt, Taylor
Subs: Clarke, Gosling, White, Harrison, Preston
For 2015/16 we had 2 new faces, plus Easter and Lines who came in during the season.
Mildenhall
Leadbitter, J Clarke, Lockyer, Parkes, Brown
Sinclair, Lines, Montano
Easter, Taylor
Subs: Monakana, Bodin, O Clarke, Gosling, Blissett, Preston
I would hazard a guess that our starting line up would be that which finished the season, maybe with the addition of Hartley in defence instead of McCrystal, so;
Mildenhall
Leadbitter, Lockyer, Hartley, Brown
Bodin, Lines, Mansell (if fit), Montano
Taylor, Gaffney
We could be fielding a first XI which have 6 players who kicked off our Conference season, good for continuity and shows DC isn't one for wholesale changes. I would think one more signing and then he will wait to see how things go over the first few games.

Not many as they have all been playing regularly at a higher level than us. so following your thinking through maybe just sign 11 players who have been playing at a higher level and hey presto were ok? the 3 players you mentioned might have been playing badly at a higher level? we know most of our squad played very well albeit in league 2.

Didn't Buckle try something similar? The only position which concerns me is CM, but how many decent CM's will want to join us just to be CL's deputy?? Goalie wise I'm happy to see how Mildenhall performs in the first few games, if he's poor bringing in a goalie doesn't seem difficult, CB wise surely MM is a good enough sub? Wiki suggests Erhun Oztumer is only 5'3'' so we'd have some fun winning anything in the air if he played alongside SS!!

dont get why people are in such a hurry to change/rip up a winning team??? I think "rip up" is an extremely OTT comment. Nobody (as far as I can see) is suggesting that. What I am suggesting is that I think it's incredibly naive to assume that a side who played non-league football just 2 years ago will now be good enough to really make an impact on L1. I'm not saying that they won't be good enough - I'm just pointing out that I think it's incredibly naive - and indeed rather fairy-tale/fantasy stuff to imagine we will still be able to compete (properly) in L1 without strengthening and improving our starting 11. "Stand still and get left behind" is the old adage. I truly believe many of our players will make the step up and - at the very least - will be able to play a part from the bench. But I also think some areas of the team (especially midfield and goalkeeper) can be strengthened and I'd be disappointed if we don't address this. That's certainly very different from saying "let's rip the team up".
