DC's hardly had all summer to bring in a replacment for Leadbitter when he only picked up an injury leading up to the Sabadell tour plus it hardly sounds a major injury anyway? Rergardless J Clarke seems to have recovered from his knock so Broom will only be needed as a back come Saturday anyway.

Steve Hamer was locked in his office all day yesterday trying to nail down some deals #ITK

And that is exactly what Steve Hamer should have been doing yesterday.

And that is exactly what Steve Hamer should have been doing yesterday. There was a queue of disappointed children outside his office door waiting to shake his hand and he didn't appear. I heard some parents say it would be the last time they would take their children to the Memorial Stadium during his tenure.

Find it amazing that kids would want to meet him. Are you sure it wasn't the parents wanted to "meet" him?

Slightly ridiculous comparison. Remember as well that he had a vastly experienced Manchester United team playing around him whereas we have many questions to be answered at this level amongst the rest of our squad in exactly the position Lyttle found himself last season and when did we see him again? ummm he started life at Everton....

I think a few people have got a little touchy with my OP. It wasn't meant as a major criticism, just a personal observation.
As Steve says, given the rumoured wealth of our new owners and the euphoria following their takeover, I was expecting us to have spent a little bit of money this season, given the step up from L2 to L1. That doesn't mean I expected us to splash millions and I fully appreciate (and actually agree) with the "evolution, not revolution" approach, BUT; I did expect us to have at least a little bit of cash to play around with.
I fully appreciate spending money doesn't guarantee you get yourself a decent player; nor that the player will definitely be better than those available on a free. However, I'm sure there are some players in L2 and/or L1 who are better than what we have currently, who are tied in to a contract but 1) would be up for coming here and 2) wouldn't necessarily cost millions.
As per my OP, it's obviously a case of me overestimating the wealth of our new owners and - as Paul Buckle would say - I obviously need to "lower my expectations".
I must admit that I was expecting us to have bought one or two in for £100k-£200k. Instead we've picked up two free transfers and a loanee.
As I say, it's obviously a case of me expecting too much - and that's fair enough. I'm not knocking DC or even the chairman and/or our president as at no point have they said they'd splash the cash; I think it's just a bit disappointing that we still don't appear to have the money available to compete in the way I perhaps hoped we did.
I have always supported DC and the squad, but I think those expecting us to properly compete at the business end of the table with our current squad are living in fairy-tale land.
I don't expect us too struggle necessarily - and mid-table wouldn't be a bad result at all and I'd be happy with that; I just expected a bit more financial investment in the playing side, that's all.
There is still time though. And I admit, I have obviously missed one or two interviews with DC, especially if he actually said end of August. So I appreciate there is still time yet.
Fingers crossed.

DC has his way, and his way as he said himself has been pretty successful so far. Perhaps DC just doesn't want to upset things too much

You could well be right. As I say, it's only a fault of my own that my expectations were this high anyway as nobody at the club has ever said we've got money to burn. I think I was probably just expecting a bit too much. Anyway, still time left yet I guess.

When you were a kid and you were told that Christmas was at the end of December did you start saying to your mum "When will these Christmas elves and Reindeer materialise"? on 2nd December?

I maybe wrong, but you sense DC is trying to build his reputation on taking unwanted players and turning them into good players, if he starts splashing the cash that reputation maybe blown, after all he declined Wael's offers to sign players last April and was proven, by the skin of his teeth, he was right. The fact DC's signed a 3 year contract and we've retained MT & Co suggests Wael is backing DC financially, so money surely the issue stopping DC signing players.

What most fail to realise - with regard to "splashing the cash" is that just about ALL the squad players will have had an uplift in salary, which I imagine could be quite a considerable total, plus all the incremental improvements in staff, stands, scoreboards etc.
Just a quick question as an aside, do players renewing their contracts get a "signing on" fee? I assume their agents will still want paying?
