Hanlan is awful in this system and that’s a hill I am prepared to die on

Two good assists as well. Decent footballer at L2/Conference level. Hopefully he makes the step up to L1 more successfully next time he gets a chance.

I can’t believe some people don’t rate Westbrooke. Our best player by several thousand leagues You're kidding. Absolutely not. He’s a class above every other player in a blue and white shirt.

Is it just me that gets frustrated with Hanlan? He is very industrious, but doesn't do enough to get into goalscoring situations. Perhaps that's just lack of service (fair enough), but when he laid it off for Westbrooke on the left of the area a few minutes ago, he was so laboured in getting into a goalscoring position. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh? He’s nowhere near as good as is made out. Slows our attack down massively.

Now training with the under 23's, he sounds miles off. Garner told Bristol Live the injury has healed, but Barrett is still some way from a return to the first team.
"At the moment he’s training with the under-23s and trying to get fit," the manager said.
"Once he’s fit and up to speed, he comes back into the reckoning for the first team.
"It’s just getting him back up to speed. The hamstring has healed, he’s just trying to build his fitness levels now and get back into a good physical condition and be on the same level as the first-team players."
Sounds much closer to a return than Ayunga: "Jonah’s progressing well," Garner said. "Where the injury was in the hamstring was a bit of a difficult place, so we’ve had to be careful with, but he’s progressed really well over the past week or so.
"We’re really happy with how he’s progressing and he’s entering the latter stages of his rehab now, and he’s trying to push back and get fit and get training."

A friend of mine is Argyle and wanted to know what I thought of Grant, which did actually require some thinking to be fair. Interested to hear what others have to say as I'm certainly not blown away, but it's clear he's very highly rated by Garner.
I told him the following:
I think it's probably still slightly too early to judge him properly. What I have seen so far I haven't been overly impressed, but that's not to say he's not a decent L1 midfielder. He's reasonably effective in the holding role - which is the only position he has played for us - and several times now I've seen him prevent the opposition breaking two or three on one, which is good. However, I think there's definitely aspects lacking from his game. He honestly doesn't seem the most mobile or the fittest of players, and I have at times been disappointed by his work-rate. I think for a fairly big lad he's not the strongest on the ball, either. We tend to play a three in the middle with him sat behind two more creative players, but I think he looks better in a three with one next to him and one in front.
He's probably a L1 player because of his positional and situational awareness as much as anything. Technically he's not sensational, although he did play a great first time ball out to our right back to cross in for an assist the other week. On the flip side he missed a bit of a sitter after about 5 minutes at Shrews. But I'm not sure that he's really in the mould of player that Garner has championed previously so I do wander what he sees that perhaps I can't.
I think he's one of two players (Hanlan being the other) that seems to slow our play down, and whether that's intentional/tactical I don't know. All in all, I can't see that he's any better than Ogogo was... Maybe marginally better with ball in to feet, but he doesn't offer the same energy or presence in the middle of the park. That being said, it's still very early days and I believe he took a while to settle with you also.
Not unimpressed, not overly impressed, just slightly ambivalent if truth be told. Perhaps feeling like that is not a bad sign for a player given his particular role, though.

James Daly has the energy of a Stuart Sinclair but the brain of a much better player. So good at closing down not just the man but the angle.

We'll do well to hold onto Daly for more than a year or two I'd say.

The subs worked well, I thought. Only criticism is that perhaps they should have come sooner.
McCormick and Daly put in huge shifts and we were looking leggy across the pitch before Nicholson and Oz came on. Nicholson for Daly looked like a straight swap, but Nicholson does have a tendency to drift wider left. I was disappointed with Nicholson's work rate for the first 10 he was on the pitch, and don't think he initially did enough to put pressure on their back four with fresh legs. The Oz/McCormick switch saw Westbrooke play slightly more defensively, and Oz sat just in front of him and Grant looking to provide an outlet on the break. Upson wasn't on the pitch long enough to pass judgement.
After the initial double substitution the back 5 seemed to drop deeper as a unit, and the midfield sat narrow, which meant that Shrewsbury had a lot of the ball, but had to work backwards as much as they looked to go forward. I think we nullified them well after the changes, but we looked vulnerable before them.
Obviously not the most convincing of wins, but a sensible performance, and I'd say Garner got it right as we could easily (and should) have nicked a late one to kill off the game completely.
There's definitely the makings of something decent there, but can't help but feel that it could easily go either way at the minute.

Rubbish first half, I thought. Looked flat footed and they really should have scored from at least one of his mistakes. Pretty solid second half and the clearance off the line was an excellent piece of defending. Hopefully he continues to improve, but Harries and Baldwin are setting the standard at the moment.

Sometimes sloppy in possession but spirited performance, jaakola is a tremendous keeper, thought we were lucky at times, Ehmer great stop on the line, but felt Daly should have had a pen second half, and Grant should have hit the target first half. We have a young inexperienced team who will only get better. Had the pre match whirl circle, dont understand why Home games are easy to get but away makes me wonder will I see any action. Same for me. Had to download the EFL ifollow app in the end and get the game on that. Getting the impression you can only get home games via the club website. For away games you need to use the EFL ifollow app. Can anyone confirm that or explain why the club website is so bad for away games? I watched through our website. No issues, crystal clear and didn’t buffer or lag at all. My first time using the streaming service though, and was panicking slightly after purchasing because it was showing that I had subscribed and had access, but I couldn’t immediately see how to actually watch. In the end I went back to the news article from a few days ago, which had a link to the “match day centre” for this evening’s game. From there it was a click and I was away. Not sure why the club can’t link to the match day centre from the subscription page, but then nothing is ever straightforward with Rovers.
