Seeing Burton 2 up at Pompey after 6 minutes made my minor dislike of Pompey pump up a little. I didn't even realise they are in the relegation zone. LOLZ.
But the Toole [JJOT] has just 2 yellows in the space of 4 mins to put them down to 10 men.
Sorry, not very Rovers related, but still a tad miffed that Browner went there, as I think they are flaky as f**k and may never get back in the Championship.

Big game tonight ..., Fancy the crowd might just be swelled after Saturday and hoping for another win. So many times in the recent past, following a great performance and high expectation Rovers teams then ‘ can’t get up for the game’ and we hear the Manager bemoan that the honest set of lads just weren’t on it. Win tonight (and I think we just might ) and momentum is definitely starting... I think the team are looking ok but just wished we had one or two additions in key areas. I would have thought the opposite. Tuesday night, long time after payday, and after a month of 2 games more week. Has all the hallmarks of a horribly low crowd to me.

Agree with some points apart from the board being fakes. DC cost us and still is costing us an absolute fortune and the money he recouped in transfers come nowhere near to covering the losses for players which are on high wages that some are on here. GC has a budget framework which needs to be governed by SCMP and the only way around that is to move out your higher earners or players you don’t want to be able to sign others. We already wrote off a further £3m in losses last year, how much more is acceptable to you? As I wrote the other day, to sign a player on £2k per week, plus signing on fee and agents fee actually costs around £250k per year if no fee is involved. It’s simple maths. We already have some players earning or close to earning £200k per year. You want to see more players etc, then phone up the stay aways and get them to come back to watch to give us a fighting chance of it getting better, staying away waiting for an improvement won’t help! . I know football is a fickle business but that’s the reality of it. Where does your £250k figure come from in respect of a £2k pw player? There might be the odd free agent getting a signing on fee but your figure seems high? Also, what portion do you think is paid to agents and doesn’t fees paid to agents get disclosed each year? Agent fees are officially reported each year and ours have always been at the low end in this lge.

I think a lot of it actually has to do with the last 18 months of nothing but disappointment off the field combined with a poor DC second half of 17/18 and then the poor season of 18/19. According to the ticket office, we are 1500 season tickets down on last year. If those season ticket holders occasionally bring a partner/family member/friend as well then you can be down as much as 2000 people per game. That’s a huge amount of lost revenue. Spot on. I've said it 200 times. It takes a while to build up a reputation, and a while to lose it. We went up and up, with quirky and interesting football, and then it slowly stagnanted. Home form collapsed, mostly AFTER ST sales had been made so this season has been the one to really take a hit. Managers in the past have literally been sacked for low attendances (Atkins in particular) because it has a huge effect on cash flow. Football clubs only get around 25 chances a year to make significant money, plus all the add ons associated with a match day. Feel a little sorry for GC as most of the ST drop was due happenings in the 9 months before him, plus his style in making us survive.

Really? They are a consistent championship club with a great stadium and pedigree, and a recent trip to the Premier Lge. Have nothing against Lincoln but they are at the top of their tree. It's great when clubs like Luton and Lincoln finally get their lives in order and going flying up, but it will very very rarely last. And now I have to mention money. The difference is literally out if this works. Linc have done great on the pitch but that won't have hardly made a dent in the salary and resource comparison between the two clubs.

Well I was there and we weren’t clinical enough and didn’t take our chances. That’s not unlucky or getting robbed it’s being not clinical enough. Just felt we weren’t gonna score if we were there til midnight I wasn’t there but that we was robbed is churned out every week by loads of fans who have seen their side play well not take their chances and lose. It’s all about putting it in the back of the net more times than them and we lost two nil. That’s not robbed it’s being less clinical than the opposition. To be fair last season under Cogs we were often outplayed in the middle of the park but scrapped wins and draws to keep us up. A lot of people simply don't understand football. Or sport. Or life. It's pretty similar.

Don't think Craig needs any extra security, he's playing just as well as Davies. i really like the three of them they give our defending in general extra security. I’m sorry but Craig does not have the legs for L1 in a central pairing. However as a 3 he doesn’t have to cover the same amount of yards and has Kilgour and Davies a step or 2 in front of him. This has brought a solidarity in the back line and actually improved his game. He still is a great director of the defence from there and worthy of his place in this formation. Took the words out of my mouth. 👍👍 Sometimes people forget that getting the right balance in defence is just as important as the right balance up top or in midfield. Craig clearly knows the game inside out but he's physically old school (small and not pacey). With these two next to him it's a great combination.

Is it too much to ask for our official matchday programme to spell his name right? On both the teams page and the player sponsors page he is listed as Jaankkola. They obviously can spell his name right as the first team fixtures & results page and the match action pages have Jaakkola. I think it is poor form to spell it incorrectly four programmes in a row. Also, whilst I’m having a gripe at the programme, can’t the academy fixtures that have already happened show the result rather than the kick off time? Is it useful to know that they kicked off at 11am three weeks ago? I'm in regular contact with Rob the programme editor and I'll politely mention the relevant details on this thread 👍 UTG

Programme - unprofessional to make the same mistake twice but if the editor doesn’t know it’s happening it’ll probably happen again. Has anyone reported to Gorringe? Nothing to do with TG. Watched their goal a few times this morning, did it take a deflection? Don't think so. It was a funny old shot and goal. It seemed to take ages to reach the goal and I thought the keeper would catch it easily (We sit in the first block of the Centenary or whatever it's called now) and had a fairly good view. I was amazed when it went in, perhaps our keeper was unsighted. It was easily saveable, although well-placed. I had an excellent view of it from Blackthorn. Not right behind it so can't say if it took a deflection or bent significantly (I don't think it did either though...) but it certainly was right in the bottom corner, which can be hard for a big keeper to get. It certainly was a slow-mo feeling. As soon as he hit it it seemed like it might creep in the post, but everything seemed to be in slow-mo, including Jaakkola...

Thanks for that good write up Steve.
As someone mentioned, let's also remember that it was a seriously hot day. Both teams flagging near the end. I had a short run (3 miles; I usually do more but not in that heat) at 11am and I was sweating after like I've never sweated before...

1 nil up against 11, keeper didn't have to make a save all game, dominated midfield, great goal by JCH, penalty earnt and put away by Smith.
But, if that's what you call awful, up to you.
Players given their marching orders, change football matches. This is just fact. Sometimes the man advantage will tell and the score will go on to be a rout. Other times there’s a shuffle in the pack and the superior numbers have to adjust to a new set up (having been comfortable for the last hour) and an inevitable 10mins of stormy waters will come. You don’t have to have played the game at a decent level to know this. The game was won, for all our recent problems on the pitch, that is what matters. Nothing else. Bring on Oxford. yes, and it's funny how we are (quite rightly) remembering Junior Agogo and BRFC on another thread for THAT comeback with 9 men, whilst on this thread people are saying 9 men should always be trampled over. BTW- we also survived relegation last season by battering out narrow wins, often away from home. 3 points is 3 points. Add enough of them together and you get to mid-table.

One thing slightly forgotten/brushed over about the whole thing when people are pleading for Bury to be saved is the creditors that have had to write off 75% of the money owed to them because they are never going to get it back what about those people and those businesses This is not some calculated swipe at the Sh1!heads, but if I was a billionaire (or even a millionaire) and I bought City the first thing I would have done would be to get someone to research the debts they left in 1982 and to track every organisation / person down, add on the interest, pay them and say sorry. Any they couldn't find could go to a local or appropriate charity.

Is it not the case that when Rovers or City are at away and the match receives full commentary that more listeners and in turn callers will be listening to the show? Sir, you most stop this ridiculous use of facts. Stop it now

I liked Paul Miller. He always seemed to be in the shadow of Taylor and Stewart. Pretty sure Miller outscored both of them in 1994/95. He did. But then got very few the season after.

James Clarke. I have to say, I do love a utility player. Lockwood was brilliant. One of my Rovers favourites. AHH, the old utility player Aidy Boothroyd? Bob Bloomer? Aaron Lescott? Vaughan Jones in a way (started as right back and moved all along the line to the player we usually remember). Adam Virgo

Brilliant idea for a thread sir I’ve come up with two teams ! One mainly full of more well known players, who although were probably not underrated in the bigger picture, they didn’t seem to quite get the love and plaudits they deserved. The second XI is more of the lesser known players / didn’t stay as long. I've been watching since 1988/89 season so my team reflects that. I'm going on what they did in a Rovers shirt, not before or after. Some, like Adam Barrett and Ijah Anderson were helped to look dodgy by being in such a poor team Ijah in particularly always seemed so ridiculously error prone because he got involved in everything, and cared too much. It made him look bad, whilst others just did little. I had a chat with Sergio last year and asked why he didn’t stay at Rovers. Apparently Ray Graydon was obsessed with having his own players [I’ve heard this from numerous sources, not just Sergio]. Rovers had very little contact with Sergio after the end of the season, and finally invited him to a ‘trial’, where Ray still didn’t keep him. Yeah because Ray had so many better players lined up didn't he More famous XI
GK – Lee Jones LB – Aaron Lescott Def – Adam Barrett Def – Byron Anthony Def – Mark McChrystal AMF – Dave Mehew MF – Andy Reece MF – Justin Skinner AMF – Lewis Haldane CF – Paul Miller CF – Richard Walker Less famous XI (please excuse the 2 x LBs and 2 x RBs, and dodgy formation!)GK – Ryan Clarke LB – Joe Jacobson Def – Ijah Anderson Def – Ryan Green RB – Robbie Pethick MF – Dwayne Plummer MF – Ronnie Mauge MF – Andy Monkhouse IL – Stuart Nicholson CF – Sergio Ommel IR – Jo Kuffour
