To be fair Barton needed the big squad so that he could switch from plan A to plan B to plan C and so on. If your manager has a set way of playing then you don’t need full backs or wingers who can’t adapt to the style chosen. Only 5 subs maximum can get on so a squad of 16 plus promising kids should be good enough provided your top 16 aren’t inconsistent (Collins, Finley) or constantly getting injured, which was another gamble Barton took by signing players too good for L1 (Rossiter, Ward) but with eye watering injury records. Taylor has addressed the inconsistency in two ways he’s got Finley reaching the right levels every week and shipped out the occasionally mercurial but often mediocre Collins. Some bodies in to share the load given the exhaustion levels and the high workload would be desirable but the main rebuild in summer is when we’ll see both the manager’s and board’s true intentions.

Bolton forum claiming several people saying he has checked into the hotel next to their stadium and also has changed his Twitter profile to professional footballer and removed Bristol Rovers. Oh no! If he gets an accurate impression of what it’s like to live in Bolton/Horwich he’ll never bloody sign for them!

Like the thinking here in starting a deadline day thread early. Tell our transfer admin that today is the last day of the window then when they deliberately procrastinate on a deal and complete it at 23:00:15 expecting the transfer to be rejected they will be shocked to hear they were successful in beating the cut off by 23 hours and 59 minutes!

As we aren't safe and have an injury prone back line I think it would be madness to get rid. All we need is one of Friend, Wilson, Hunt to be injured again. ……which one of them will be. All good players but they do like our medical room. Not their fault I should add but true nevertheless. UTG! Plan is to convert Rossiter into a defender to cover….oh wait….

I don’t get why people keep suggesting we jettison decent players to sign inferior ones. We should be aiming to come out of each window stronger not shorn of the current fan scapegoats to parachute in resources that are not setting the world alight at their current clubs. Just swapping current ‘hate’ figures for future ones.

Nah it's really poor for me. Some banter around actual football sure but signing a player? It's a business deal I really don't get what we're gloating about. It did seem a bit strange to me it's not like we are some major rivals or there is any needle or anything is there really , I doubt you looked up anything about us until Conteh much like I didn't have any interest in Rovers since that Play-off final . But maybe it's just the modern way I have enjoyed reading this over the last few days a decent and varied forum , I will be keeping an eye out for your results and checking in on this every so often for sure so you have a new subscriber . Hopefully a win tomorrow and Conteh plays (well) Did he have his own song at Grimsby? It seems to me like Karma Chameleon would be made for him! Something like…. Kamil, Kamil, Kamil, Kamil, Kamil Conteh boys Lets make some noise whilst he destroys whoa-oo nothing he finds easier than breaking up the play which he does all day then he sets us away whoa-oo he’s the boss of the midfield (midfield) all opponents have to yield Kamil, Kamil, Kamil, Kamil, Kamil Conteh all he shields the ball Until they fall… nothing he finds easier…etc

We used to be the most amateurly run professional league club in England…apparently we’ve got worse.

A front two of Dean Martin?? Think that suggests too much alcohol will be in use to make them effective!

Upon his arrival we all thought he was a super tro(o)per but now he’s thinking “ it’s slipping through my fingers, mamma Mia, better ring, ring someone for an SOS or it’s so long and Hasta Manana baby!” The owner looks at him and winks “Knowing me, knowing you I wish it was the day before you came!” MT replies “Same here…I do, I do, I do, I do, I do!”

I see that Bristol Live is reporting that Matt Taylor advised we’re racing against the Friday midday deadline to get a transfer over the line that will enable inclusion in the Blackpool game squad…hasn’t anyone told him our transfer administrators aren’t good with deadlines???

I reckon we scored too early. Norwich were sleepwalking out of the cup until somebody galvanised them into life with a rollicking half time team talk. 0-0 at half time and they don’t get a passion injection…. We score 20 minutes into the second half rather than the first and the game is ours.

Several times in this thread you mentioned Richard Kone and as can be seen from the recent update post above a club at our level has taken the plunge with him and he’s begun promisingly so I’d mark that down as a successful scout. I think there have been other examples where a player has attained or surpassed the standard you suggested they’d reach. I know we’re all hoping you’ll unearth the next Nigel Martyn or Gary Penrice but we also know how rare they are and for every one of them there are a hundred Shaq Hunters!
Now this thread has achieved a decent age and sample size I wonder whether it is representative of a typical club scouts results? How many of the names on here reached or exceeded a level equivalent to L1? How many may not have attained that level but have achieved raising themselves to a higher standard of football than that they were playing when first talent spotted? How many stagnated or slipped back? And how many gave up entirely? I know several were suggested for trials or development squad possibilities rather than recommendations for the first team squad so even those plying their trade at a higher level now would be considered development successes. If the hit rate stats prove comparable to those of a footy scout in a paid position maybe you could wave those numbers in the current regimes direction and you might have their ear in future.

Enjoyable experience at Carrow Road yesterday, not every player was on top form but they all put a shift in which is so much easier to get behind and consistently sing as one voice. With Vale and Thomas we genuinely offer options on either flank to attack and both players link well with their inside midfielder and wide CB to both defend and work the ball away from danger with tight crisp passing rather than the long slow build up we witnessed earlier in the season. The goal was the icing on the cake of a stellar performance by Grant Ward who showed the form that made him a championship midfielder before his horrendous luck with injuries. Was pleasing that Canaries fans were only able to sing “ one-nil on your big day out” for less than six minutes. Norwich is actually a decent day out with the quality pubs etc but they probably don’t realise we’ve been told our big day out has been in such wonderful locations as Derby, Bolton and Portsmouth!

How is he doing in the Conference? Think he has only played a couple of games due to injuries. Allegedly coming back to us in January. Yes he got injured early season and Bromley went on an impressive run of form without him. He’s forced his way back onto the bench but has been reduced to cameo appearances due to the good form of the starting XI.

Wish we would sign our own players really. He's out-of-contract in the summer, so perhaps there is a chance of a more permanent deal in the future? Even so I think we’d get more passion and commitment and a determination to do what our manager wants to be done from giving Ryan Jones a run in the side. He was impressive in the preseason games only to be turfed out on loan, injured and then underutilised. Time to back him in my opinion.

Which is funny because apparently JCH is too old, and Rhodes is 4 years older. (and Norburn) Didn't get to watch the match, so gonna skim the comments to see how we did even though we lost. Couldn't help the JCH comment though. Marquis is older than JCH but still JCH is too old for us. 😂 I don't think we were as bad as the comments on here will suggest. 1st half pretty even and a really good watch. Norburn with a worldie and a smart finish from Marquis saw honours even and probably a fair reflection of the first 45. 2nd half Cox made a poor attempt at a really easy chance to clear and we were punished 45 seconds in. We looked really shakey for a spell after that but it wasn't like Blackpool were all over us for long periods of the game. But for a very lucky offside decision, we could have have pulled it back to 2-2. After that it was Blackpool in control and they ran out deserved winners but it wasn't a hammering by any standards. Agreed. I took my sister and nephew (Gasheads) and my eldest niece’s husband (neutral…northern Irish Charlton fan). Consensus was both teams tried to produce a decent game despite the wind, we made a sloppy mistake just as the second half started and then got caught on the break chasing the equaliser which Thomas’s disallowed goal and Collins foiled one-on-one suggested we might get. Ultimately they had more players performing at par or above than we did, you can win games in L1 with a couple of substandard performers but only if the opposition has either equally as many, or more misfiring individuals and Blackpool didn’t. Thomas and Finley were our most prominent performers and there were at least two Blackpool players who achieved a higher level of performance than them.

Been chatting to a few FGR supporters in my village. All more than happy with his performances despite results and sad to see him leave. We all agree that 'Belshaw' would be a great name for a pet dog. It’s a dog with 8 legs but can’t command the back four.
