Just thought I would give a quick heads up. There is a fair amount of the wet stuff due in Bristol this week. With Friday being the only possible dry day. With rain expected right through Saturday morning and into the afternoon, it may put the match in doubt. I think it will be playable by Saturday.

Anyone know the name of this centre half from the "they shall not pass era" ? Just for the record I have had it confirmed by a long serving gashead that it is Dave Pyle and the goalkeeper is Ron Nicholls. It was an FA Cup match v Fulham at Craven Cottage on 1/3/58 in front of a 42,0000 crowd. The Fulham team included Johnny Haynes and Jimmy Hill for those who can remember the old uns. We lost 3 - 1, but a great goal by Geoff Bradford. There is a Pathe News film of the highlights, which is longer than the usual Sky highlights that we are now used to !!! I found it on google by typing Fulham v Bristol Rovers 1958, but don't know how to include it in this thread. Can someone insert it for those that would like to see ??

That sir is absolutely brilliant . Yes, bl00dy well spotted. I didn't have a clue, but then, I have never been to Craven Cottage (Even if I had, I probably wouldn't have known) I'm impressed with your spot. Was it the windows at the back? If the centre half is Dave Pyle then the only game I can find him playing at Craven Cottage was on 4/4/1958 which if so then our goalkeeper in that match was Howard Radford. But I'm sure someone will correct me !!

Is that our keeper laid out ? I was thinking the same. A number 5 is usually a defender, so was thinking he was our keeper. I think you are probably right. Looks like hooped socks. Maybe my initial post of " they shall not pass" is wrong, but the initial responses made me laugh!! Is it our physio ?? All suggestions welcome.

I remember as a kid watching Rovers train in Eastville Park and the horrible cinder pitch at the Muller Road end which was very occasionally use if the park was too wet. The old Frenchay training ground offered a glimmer of light before it was sold-off (can't remember who was in charge then) and it's been a long nomadic existence since. So I'm delighted that this need has been sorted and really hope it's a first step in a journey forward for our club. Well done Wael and his family. Ditto!

Arsenal apparently made 4 last night Premiership clubs have quality in depth, we don't have that luxury, even at League 1 level. In my earlier comment I was merely questioning the total change of the midfield four with no creative or forward thinking player. No Lines, Clarke or Colkett. Who was supposed to open up the opposing defence in that line up?

It was the same defence that has made very similar mistakes all season-also the Managers fault but the point is that Charlton especially first half were not thatr good and quite possibly with the team from the previous game we may have gone more than one goal ahead. If we haven't got a new keeper and a tall centre half in by the weekend we will do well to get a result against Northampton but that is not to say we won't do it. Any Manager will know that it was a huge and stupid risk to change all six players in front of the back four taking into account the number of appearances they had made. A central midfield pairing of Mansell and Sinclair alone was going to cause problems because one would run out of steam covering for the other one who would have steam to spare but run all over the place leaving huge holes in the centre of midfield for the other to cover. DC showed totally his inexperience in that move and although the long term is not going to be affected by this result it is annoying to go so far and watch what was probably a team that would have struggled to beat a National League side on the day. I don't for one minute think we will go up this season or in fact really want us to go up this year-nice as it may be but with the right signings now it will help us finish higher and possibly have at least one play off game but more importantly slowly break up this squad which is not good enough to go up rather than have a complete clear out at the end of the season. For what its worth, I totally agree. I was there and concur with your comments. I thought DC once said attack, attack, attack. But there was no creativity going forward. Front men have to work on scraps. Why no Clarke or Lines and why didn't Colkett get a kick?

Having supported Rovers for fifty years, I am pretty used to seeing us lose. I never have a go at the team or the manager whilst at a game but I feel the pain like everyone else when we get beaten. I took the missus yesterday who has only been to a handful of games in her life and we were both really up for the game, particularly knowing that we would have great support. However, on hearing about the six changes, I found myself feeling more and more deflated almost to the point of dreading what was about to take place. Yes, like others have posted, DC does move in mysterious ways and has pulled off some shocks in the past but this really did seem to be a bridge too far. I live in the London area so its not a great distance for me but even so, I felt short changed by the team selected. If people are injured, fair enough but it doesn't seem as though they were? For me , the real mystery is how both Mansell and Lawrence can be picked alongside each other and be deemed to be a better bet than people who are younger and have played for most of this season and last. Both turn like the titanic and cannot be match fit! I am a season ticket holder and also have supported Rovers for over fifty years. I did travel from Bristol to Charlton yesterday and could not believe my eyes when the team was announced, in fact my traveling mate really thought I was joking when I read it out to him. Yes, I do feel cheated and would not have traveled if I had known the starting line up beforehand. I went because our two previous home results had been encouraging to the point that we had I thought we had found our best team. I believe that until the team can be improved we play our best competitive team subject to injuries. To have our two midfield players, namely Ollie & Linesy, who both excelled in the last home game, sat in with the fans, not even on the bench, was a disgrace. Never mind the fact that Colkett, another midfielder, does not get a kick and Boetang was deemed not good enough. Compared to the midfield yeterday, they would have been an improvement, at least they both can pass the ball to one of our players, instead of the opposition. I don't agree with DC's current rotation method, we do not have the quality in depth to do this. They may have worked in the past two years, in lower divisions, but not in this one. I will certainly think twice before I travel away again.

A true rovers legend. I saw Ray play many times and remember the match in '66 at Eastville against Middlesbrough when Bernard Hall was sadly injured in a collision with John O'Rourke. No hesitation Ray went in goal, all for the cause. RIP Ray.

Full agree. To think we'll take near 3000+ is madness. Do very well to take half that. Well if you read 51s post again, half that might be enough. Their average is 3500... Yes, that's what I was suggesting. Only 2911 total v Scunthorpe on Tuesday, can't find how many home supporters. I will be there UTG.

Just got my coach ticket and was told that match tickets were returned this morning, now pay on the day. Asked how many sold and told just over 600. How many do we think will travel by car or train and pay on the day to boost our confirmed 600??

apparently we've been given over 3,000. I'm gonna make the trip I see their average attendance this season is 3500. Could we actually take more gasheads than there will be home support? it's a long journey but I will be going.

When will we see our Chelsea star show what he can do in more than 10 minutes ? Are we playing too well for him to get a start ?

Meader's taxi service has 4 seats available for anyone who wants to go to York City for the final away game of the season, from the North Bristol area. He will properly charge £20 for the privilage, and will leave North Bristol at 8:30am. I understand he might also run the Taxi service to Stevenage if demand is there. Just looked at possibility of train to York. leave temple meads 7.30 arrive York 11.30 return 18.45 arrive Bristol 22.45. return price £114.40. Taxi service looks good deal

Just seen on Facebook that Bobby Jones passed away today - anyone have any official confirmation? Very sad news, one of my all time favourite players. Picture from my archive, remember him well from my Eastville days. RIP Bobby Attachment Deleted
