On a wage budget 5-6 times bigger than ours having spent their way out of League 1 the previous season. Not saying its a bad example it's just not one we are likely to emulate.
I would of thought Burton was a good example of a well run club not spending over the odds but still punching above their weight. Shrewsbury too have done excellently this season on a wage budget similar to ours. It can be done.
Until this season they hadn't spent a penny on transfer fees since they signed Lee Gregory from Halifax for £300k back in 2014, and even then they made half of that back by selling Scott Malone to Cardiff.
Millwall are 1 point of the Play Offs in The Championship despite only spending about £600k net over the last 4 years.
Burton have spent twice as much on transfers in the same time frame.
Its about being prudent in the transfer market, I'd rather have better quality free transfers on higher wages, than not so good players who cost transfer fees.
Millwall have done brilliantly.
Millwall have done brilliantly this season having come up from League one there is no denying that. They have a superb home record and if we are to go up in the next 2-3 seasons this is something we need to emulate if we want to survive in the division above.
Burton may have spent more this season but they are still a very well run club to be where they are on the crowds they get.
You say "I'd rather have quality free transfers on higher wages, than not so good players who cost transfer fees" but equally couldn't you say that it would be preferable to get quality players who cost transfer fees to not so good free transfers on higher wages? There are two sides to that particular coin, a shrewd transfer policy will often encompass both.
