Watching #skypapers tonight and the looking at the right wing papers headlines in tomorrow’s papers about bloody fish & warships ...... this country is off its head . Ah were going to rerun the 1970s Icelandic Cod Wars, nothing like a bit of jingoism at the start of a New Year!!. Didn't the Cod Wars end with Iceland winning? It's what these ships do anyway, just tubthumping.

Yeh...but - if I recall correctly - Iceland threatened to pull out of NATO and that would have denied access to a major anti submarine choke point at the height of the Cold War .....think other pressures were maybe brought to bear behind the scenes.......

No doubt, another embarrassing diplomatic cock up that should not have got that far.

Didn't we pretty much established the ago that no deal was the aim of the Government anyway? It was always disguised of course but it is the only way those investments pay off isn't it

[br If you take short positions in the market and bet on a huge downturn, yes Like the Tory Backer Crispin Odey ? Been suggested for a while he'll make a lot from a no deal. So then, how about we no deal on 1 January but miraculously sign one by the end of the month. Boris' disaster capitalist backers get their money, EU gets the blame for wanting to 'punish' us but we sign off before the economy is irreparably damaged. £s and knighthoods all round. You can see how conspiracy theories start.

You can see how conspiracy theories start. That’s the thing isn’t it- no deal is not strictly no deal, it’s just no deal on January the 1st right? So then as you say both sides can continue talks and agree a deal at some future point? There is nothing that says that talks will end completely after the 1st? I agree with others that it seems like no deal was the plan all along so I certainly expect the current round of talks to end with a deadlock and what we are seeing now is all pretence just so that either side has the ability to pin the blame on the opponent by showing willing to still turn up and look like the good guys in all this. The BBC brexit podcast suggested as much that there is a lot of work going on purely to stage manage how both sides appear to the people they serve.
