For the second goal did Sercombe pick the ball up deciding he had been fouled and the ref penalised him for hand ball. Does Sercombe think he is a referee? From my view it looked like he fell over and it hit his hand, and the ref looked like he was gonna ignore it, and then someone (Clarke?) kicked it back at him and it seemed to fall in his lap, or something. Watched on iFollow and he definitely picked it up deliberately expecting the ref to blow his whistle. Should get a yellow card for that too tbf

Sorry no excuses for professional footballers in February not being able to play 2 games of football in a week. If this was August maybe I could understand. Sunderland also played on Tuesday btw I think we probably had to work harder v Pompey away than perhaps Sunderland had to at home v Gills? I saw very very tired players an Tuesday night that had worked extremely hard all game and possibly there was a bit of a hangover there. Yes, of course they should be fit, but Tuesday was a battle.

Home and can’t recall a decent effort all game! So boring! iirc We had a header over the bar and a free kick over the bar, but to be fair, until the last few minutes when we were pushing and they were breaking, all they really had was a header not over the bar, and a freekick not over the bar.

Sorry boys & girls! First defeat and I must admit we didn't look like scoring. We missed the creativity of THD in midfield and I think he should have started with the same team/formation as Pompey. Ollie Clark looked rusty and Sercs struggled on the left. If everyone agrees, I'll drop the Matchday thread. If not, I'll have a go again on Tuesday. I do much better away, a bit like the team .....actually 100% away!! 😭

Hard working team , yes. Creativity , a big no. Not one shot on target in the whole 90 mins. Sunderland didn’t seem a team that are fighting for promotion, in fact I would say they were bang average today. We look devoid of any intelligence, sideways passing and hoofball. Really can’t see us staying up as we simply don’t create enough.

Rather be a big fish in a small pond as we just aren’t up to league 1.

I did not see the required commitment to win this game. Had it been present the crowd would have responded. That can be said about many home games this Season.

Why do we never seem to anticipate the overhit corner or free kick. So many crosses wasted as they land in no mans land.

That was poor. Was expecting us to lose by being unlucky against a quality expensive side. We just looked crap against a not quite as crap team. I know we moan about our recruitment but was disappointed by what Sunderland had to offer. Granted they opened us up later when we were already 2 down but never caused us any real problems in open play until then

If we had someone out wide then the 'overhit' corner/kick would be fine and could result in a good chance when the ball is played back in whilst defenders are trying to readjust. In fact the first goal we conceded today, and the one on Tuesday night, came from exactly that scenario where our opponents played the ball back in after the first cross was too long.

Of course some of this is due to others being in the FA cup - Pompey and Donny fixtures both being rearranged I.e. those teams have played more games than us, so this fitness / midweek games argument doesn't really stack up. Bottom line is that I strongly believe we used to be fitter (or have more stamina...)than many teams [hence the late comebacks] and for some reason, maybe just the reality of two promotions, other teams now often look sharper, fitter and faster than us. Yeah, we also used to play with purpose and seemed to stick to the plan late in the game, but these days we just look aimless in the last 10.

Thought their centre midfield players cattermole and leadbitter dominated completely and were very sharp. Just like most of the season at home we were very poor on the ball. I find it strange that we didn't have lines on the bench. Clarke-harris won so many headers but nobody got on the end of them.

That's because Reilly hasn't a clue at this level and our CM were too busy holding hands with our our CB's to help in out, it's strange we can play so well away but so poorly at home. Coventry and the first half v Posh are the only two games all season we've out played our opponents. What's so hard about putting the ball on our own players heads on the penalty spot from a corner? .

Reilly did not seem able to anticipate enough of the headers JCH provided. Previously we had no-one to provide the headers.

Seriously was anyone entertained by that? I was sure, the first half at least. As it was the first match i saw in more than a year i looked to the game a little close.
First time i saw Holmes Denis more than in highlights, he's a good player. I hope he stays fit and goes on like that. He can be some of a player ! Too bad Sercombe seems to be a little more struggling on the left.
He's the best facing the game in a central position. I haven't followed the club much than in highlights this season and so it's a question that how did we passed to puting our last year best player to the left and change what so nicely worked ?! Is it just by default ?
