Or we make him work to his contract or he doesn't get paid. It’s hard enough getting a player who has had his head turned give 100%. How can a manager tell the players he is leaving (if true that is a disgrace given that he hadn’t even had permission to speak to anyone else) and then give his best so we win matches. The whole dynamic has been blown up. Coughlan is basically a bad influence now, given the timeline I fail to see how he can just turn up on Monday morning like nothing has happened. The only way this can be salvaged IMO is the following actually happened but we’re just now aware yet - Mansfield approached us a few days ago - GC spoke to board and the informed him lack of budget etc - GC tells them they need to do something to take the club further - Mansfield approach again & allow them to speak to GC - GC tells us he’s thinking about it and will decide tonight - GC stays at Rovers, the player rumour wasn’t true - he stated family reasons for his concern and lack of budget but he has a contract and is loyal to the club etc Even then I’m not sure people would be happy - but under the current circumstances it’s the only way I see this as salvageable

Would have been better to have said nothing until he had actually made his mind up.

Who did we play on the last day of the relegation season to the Conference? Where was DC from? Bloody Mansfield. An ex girlfriend used to live there. I hate the grim, miserable place

Even if the scenario I posted happened, I’m not sure how I would feel about the whole situation still

GC has to go now.
Not clear if it’s genuine personal reasons or lack of faith in the board or both, but it’s a sad indictment of us that he’s willing to swap us for Mansfield.
We need to accept his situation and look to get a new manager in ASAP.
I hold no bad feelings towards him, and continue to hold him in high regard and respect, but I am upset with our board. Regards him living away for us, and Southend before that, it’s true but coaching away from home is a whole different kettle of fish to managing away from home and I can see why that would be a contributing reason.
I do wonder if we’d have been more supportive towards him whether he’d have stuck at it a bit longer.

The way DC went about thing when he was approached was, “I have to sit down and think about it, I like how things are going here and I believe we are in a great place but it is a big opportunity” or similar and people respected that.
The way this has been portrayed is as if GC has made his mind up that he’s leaving whilst Mansfield haven’t even been allowed to speak to him by the club. So they’ve spoken privately and he’s decided he’s off, and made the mistake of announcing that before a deal being struck.

Even if the scenario I posted happened, I’m not sure how I would feel about the whole situation still He would have to publicly apologise, for starters. Apologise and give an explanation that culminated in him giving that interview. Regardless of the ins and outs one absolute certainty is that he should never have told the media that all that crap about having a decision to make. It should all have gone on behind closed doors.

I'm not sure Coughlan would have been very happy with Widdrington's massive 2 day interview with the Bristol Post last month. If ever there was a job application in the public domain that was it. I wouldn't be surprised if Widdrington isn't in charge for the Cup tie on Tuesday night, he obviously wants the job and I'm not sure the people now running the club will know where to go next. I suppose if it's not Widdrington with their connections in the game they could go for Derek Adams.

He’s been in record multiple times saying he’d rather do the recruitment side. Possibly for similar reasons to GC looking to move up north.

They invite you into their tent with the lure of seeing their woggle collection and then when you want to leave the tent zipper has mysteriously jammed shut. Apparently

It wouldn’t be totally out of the question either. Strewth....
