Wondered if Garner might eventually go down the 3-4-3 route as used by Wolves if he could bring in a couple of pacey wide players? Or even use Nichols wide where he might be more effective? Jaak Davies Craig Kilgour Little Upson Ogogo Leahy Rodman JCH Nichols or the more usual 4-2-3-1: Jaak Little Kilgour Craig Leahy Upson Ogogo Rodman Sercombe Nichols (or new LW) JCH It will be interesting to see how we develop Certainly the nucleus of a good side coming together For me I’d prefer Hare in there when fit, and JCH if he stays needs support up top - he’s not so effective on his own For me going forward Jaak Davies/Mayo kilgour Craig Hare ogogo upson NEW rodders JCH NEW having trouble fitting sercs in which seems silly but has he ever found consistent form in a position? So only a couple of tweeks in Jan and we have an oven ready, pre Brexit team ready to be unleashed! UTG

So only a couple of tweeks in Jan and we have an oven ready, pre Brexit team ready to be unleashed! UTG I think Sercs was player of the year a few seasons ago playing through the middle. He lost a season of his career when DC put him on the left - which I think only happened because DC wasn't confident with other options. Early days but I reckon Garner sees Upson and Sercs as our two best passing footballers. So I wouldn't be surprised to see them both in the middle (maybe in front of Agogo who absolutely dererves his place) to control the ball when we have it. What's been missing in the last couple of games - and perhaps even the last year - is a link between the midfield and JCH. Could be a role for Nichols/Hargreaves to drop into? I have the same problem with Rodman as you do with Sercs. I think he is an important player and was the only player looking to dribble at the opposition at Fleetwood, but his current position would be tough for anyone. He's an attacker so defensively he is often left wanting (although it's interesting that Fleetwood seemed to prefer playing on the right at Leahy), allowing opposition wide men to send crosses in. Unless the manager is happy for crosses coming in because of the solid three guarding the box and has told the wingbacks to stop runners at the expense of allowing crosses, but that seems risky. So to fit Rodman in all I can suggest is switching him to the other side when Hare comes back as first choice on the right. Simply because Rodman is better than Leahy going forward. What would be ideal is if we were allowed to field 12 players. It's the least the EFL could do after we helped kick start Bolton's season for them.

LL has had a decent season so far and is becoming a consistent performer for us in defence and attack, with a lovely cross on him also. Just my take of course. It will be interesting to see how BG operates in the transfer window & what additions he can make to this very good team of ours.

Just a joke like this following post on Boxing Day? "Is it wrong that his face and way annoy me already? Take it back to school as such and he reminds me of one of those annoying keener types that use ten words rather than 1 and are away with the fairies!" Proper comedian...but don't give up the day job. Yeah he’s not my cup of tea to be honest as I love an old school manager in style that’s a bit more aggressive but with all the modern tricks of course but pirate I’m completely behind him at the games and really hope he does well. I’m just annoyed a little as I can see the changes and disruption coming imo and we were on to a good thing and if we just got a left winger, and goal scoring forward then we could of really challenged in my opinion. I now foresee disruption and evolution into a new style which takes the focus off of our league position subconsciously and will mean we will be up and down for a period before it settles again. For me the players now look on trial and on edge rather than settled as before. None the less good point today and we move on and pray we beat me dons and push on and hope I’m talking sh**! I fear I’m not and we will sink until big changes in the summer. Agree with some of that but imo GC was never going to go for a winger, not his style, he wanted it tight, defensive first and what we were under GC was what we were going to stay as. I liked the results he brought, not overly impressed with the style and thought he was often tactically out thought. But I’m very grateful for his time with us but I’m supporting BG now and hope he does well. And if we fall out of the play offs then I don’t think it will automatically be his fault, so many matches this season we sneaked a win or a draw when we could so easily have lost. Wimbledon was an example, it was so similar to many matches, this time we lost but our play wasn’t very different to where we snatched a one goal win. Very fine lines. UTG!

As far as Ogogo not sure if his hand injury is an issue but he's been shocking in his last two games since GC departed, his early yellow card yesterday was a stupid tackle. Assuming BG intends sticking with WB's I'd be looking to bring in a decent ACM to finally replace Lines one who can also tackle, but I assume the entire L1 are after that type of player. BG really needs to be to the bottom of where he stands, injury wise, with THD & Little as we've carried those two for most of this season. Not sure where we'd be w/o Rodman being able to play at RWB.

Leahy has improved over the season but I'm still not entirely convinced. I'll give you he is consistent though. Like the poster before with their Sercombe problem, I was looking for a solution to the Rodman problem. Trying to squeeze a round peg into a square hole for the sake of including him because he is a threat going forward. Bonafide wide players cementing their position has been an issue for quite a while now. Transfer window is definitely an interesting time. What business we can (and can't) get done will define our style for the remainder of this season and next season.

Some really good thoughts here on selection
I think we can all agree garner has the nucleus of a good side
I like his emphasis on ‘pace and athleticism’ as for me we have lacked any genuine pace for a few seasons now
Rodman has performed well in a position we needed cover so fair play, I’d like to see him attacking more as he has goals in him
Garner needs to assess full backs, as we can’t continue to carry Little and THD for another season. Shame but it might be time to say goodbye to both.
Our best chance for promotion in many a year this one, I don’t adhere to the theory of being ready, look at Sheffield Utd, we were playing them a few years back.... good coach with a recognised system can get you places!

My point was choosing the two best performers at wing back this season (and the greatest threat in an attacking sense) which I'd argue are Hare and Rodman. A 100% THD would be my first choice but sadly he's been so chronically absent I don't feel he's worth a mention anymore. It was a gamble to bring him in to start with and unfortunately for everyone it's not paid off. I don't rate Little as more than cover from what I've seen of him. Agogo has earned himself a couple of off days, especially at this time of year when there's a game every 3 days. In my opinion he is a better option than Clarke - who, like Agogo, is also guilty of a silly booking. Who would you replace him with from the current fit squad?

Nichols has looked a class above since coming on. Ha ha - very funny. Not being funny. He might let himself down in front of goal but the cross field pass he played to JCH for example was beautiful and pin point. He is technically a very, very good footballer.

But he’s paid to not let himself down in front of goal? Nichols may have a future as an attacking midfield player but sadly he is no striker. His assets concern his passing and ability to find colleagues with a good ball. He simply is not resilient or quick enough to play upfront in either a spearhead or supporting role. Some players have reverted from strikers to midfield players to great effect. Examples include Whiteside (Man Utd) and Kennedy (Liverpool). Of course Nichols is nowhere near the quality of those players but he may have a future in midfield. After 2.5 years, we can conclude that he is no striker - his goal output clearly suggests that.

I spoke to THD a few days ago he feels a little discomfort but not pain and is hoping to be back real soon. If so that would be great, I believe him to be the clubs most naturally talented player

Unless he can find his early season form I'd try Russe as Ogogo has been shocking in his last 2 games, I also can't see his short passes back to the CB's etc whenever he wins the ball fitting in with BG's style of play.

I’ve seen his first two matches and so far from those two games it seems to me that he wants to keep things exactly as they are across the back five whilst getting us to play more through midfield and more sideways passes to spread the play than we did under GC. It hasn’t really worked from an attacking point of view yet but obviously we’ve got to give it time and signings to see if it can work
