Let’s just go back to bringing in the likes of Alex Wall & Brad Goldberg and keep these doom merchants happy. We got promoted the season we signed them as cover for injuries so maybe we should sign them.

Well, quite. Riordan was talked up, Mathews was talked up, Nichols etc etc. If I had a quid for every signing that’s been talked up to death on here and then flopped I’d be a very rich man. I would have thought people would learn their lesson and just let the proof be in the pudding so to speak but it does seem to be the job of the football fan to act as hype merchant for their club’s transfer dealings: “ZOMG! This is our best transfer window since...the last one!!!11” etc. In fact IIRC history tells us that the unheralded signings (JCH, guilty of rubbishing that one myself I admit, Jaakola, Lambert) have a way of causing bigger waves than the ones considered great buys at our level. There might be something in that. We paid £250K for Lambert which was decent money for an L2(?) player from Rochdale, Jaakola was an international goalie and JCH an ex Championship young striker, not sure those players are the best examples of players with no previous pedigree before we signed them! Ogogo was also an experienced L1 player. Not sure why certain fans only seem content to look for negatives, if we hadn't signed any players they'd be posting Wael's a fake and not it's a clever move to wait nearer to transfer deadline day, although how can we really wait until late September to sign a CB and CM anyway. It’s not looking for negatives more than being bemused at how there is never any variety in opinion about our transfer dealings despite people regularly getting it very wrong every transfer window about the quality of our signings. The same people return 6 months later and start bigging up the latest signings as being just as good as the last (the last lot who won 2 in 15 or whatever it was I might add). We’ve not had a promotion in 4 years and yet year on year our signings are getting better and better apparently. Would have thought we would be due a promotion by now on that basis! 😛 Re: Lambert, you’re right he did cost a few quid but if I recall he seemed to go under the radar amongst the fans on the old forum. Also if I recall correctly his deal was like JCH, announced around midnight when it looked like we hadn’t managed to get anyone. Maybe we should sign all our players with minutes to spare given our record.....

Pretty sure the last two summers have been poor, DC got it totally wrong, then GC didn't seem to have the backing he thought he was going to get. As far as differing opinions, your not offering any opinion on the new signings, just suggesting they won't be any good as we can't sign good players.

Thats because nobody got injured and we kept winning games. I really hope some of this seasons players do not play at all for the same reason.

It is a very valid question, though. Certainly length of contract has probably become more important to players than actual salary. Who knows what scenarios clubs are planning for. Some may think they can cope with reduced attendances, others are fearful that any length of time could see them go to the wall. A whole season either with no crowds or, indeed, no football at all will inevitably see hordes of clubs fold. With the format of 3 games a week for the entire season any club seeking to be successful will need a big squad - yet this is being curbed by the EFL along with wages. Anyone basing their club’s fortunes on having a decent 1st XI but not much depth will inevitably struggle. That's naive.. Theres no way in the world that zain westbrooke would've joined us unless we were paying top dollar... I bet the guy had barely even heard of us

I assume Adam Dawson was also signed as cover, as was JML last January, he didn't stop them playing regularly, Baldwin looks like he's been signed as cover but it wouldn't surprise me if was a regular starter this season. Although you must be the first poster to complain that we're not signing players who are clearly not good enough to make the starting 11 regularly.
