A timely reminder of why I usually try & avoid this place during preseason!

Whilst only a friendly, with the team that was selected I would’ve expected us to have ‘bossed’ the game - not to have effectively been outplayed by a league 2 team and certainly not to have conceded four goals. That the issue, I don't really understand how the tinters are just dismissing the game as a friendly as though it was a one off, it seems apart from JCH once again the players had no interest in turning up again yesterday to play for BG.

Methinks that’s nonsense, Topper.

Stoke and Crewe both lost yesterday to Burton and Barnsley respectivly.Think we need to wait until the real stuff starts before we panic although BG isn't a number one for me and the lack of a Chris Lines type creator is still a conspicuous absence The key difference is both of their managers did well last season.

So where do we look for an objective view? I suggest we look where the monied people give their unbiased opinion. The bookies. We are now 25/1 to be Champions and 8/1 to go up. There are eleven teams with shorter odds to go up so in their opinion we will be 12th. I know this doesn't mean much, but it does give a more realistic view than some of the extreme views, both ways, expressed by us fans as we are emotionally involved. So if we were to finish 12th, would Wael be happy, would we be happy? Bookies get it wrong every day, but sobering thoughts perhaps towards our manager and signings? Personally I’d be more inclined to go by our preseason performances than bookie odds given the circumstances! At our level it’s dictated more by the market. League one observers have got excited by the apparent investment in the club in the offseason. Writing off of debts, seemingly high profile signings. I’m not a betting man but if I was I’d consider our odds offputting and poor value for money.

There were plenty of options for them to go elsewhere. Its pre season it's all about fitness and getting to know each other's game. I have and will never take anything from pre season games it's what happens in the league that concerns me.

all the goals on FGR website now. FGR two free kick goals show Annsi is far from up to speed atm. Excepting there was a strong wind he was nowhere near either shot.
FGR second goal was clearly offside but why was our No5 (Ehmer?) just stood there and not defending by playing to the whistle? Very ring rusty imo most of the Gas players although the strong wind spoilt the game as did missing all the goals watching live (but is wasn't live due to buffering). I wouldn't pay to listen to the commentary either, they sounded like 2 fans stood on the terrace after coming straight out the pub!!!! They were simply chatting not commentating imo

My comment was not to be downing but helpful for any further games they may be employed on. 10/10 for attending 10/10 for effort 10/10 for trying but like my school report "must try harder" a little less chat and a lot more commentary please

Not sure John Motson could commentate on a game when watching at pitch-level and having to look through a fence and two dugouts.

From what I could make out from the poor streaming quality FGR were by far the better side and deserved to win by more than one goal. The issues are:- 1) Too many tippy tappy passes at the back 2) Not enough tackles made in front of the back three, when FGR had the ball Rovers looked like a team of fairy fluffs. 3) JCH completely isolated

.... Ben Garner is not fitting in at The Gas. A draw at Newport, defeat by FGR. He always talks post and pre-match like good times are around the corner and they never arrive Ben, do they ? It’s preseason. So can’t read too much into it. But yes, extremely worrying. On one hand I’m worried that our first fixtures are our more difficult ones and losses will be buried under “gelling” and “strength of opposition” and that he’ll get even more time if things continue on from last season, on the other hand it means a new manager gets the easier fixtures instead! So are you advocating sacking him after 2 or 3 games if we lose them?

No. I'm just sick of the excuses and I'm concerned he'll get another 20 games like the 20 odd he had last season and our season will be over by Christmas. The club has decided to give him the chance to build a squad and it would be madness to not see it out for a period of time. If we're mid table after 6 or 7 games I won't be complaining. But another stretch like he's already had and the writing will be on the wall. When do we stop making excuses for Garner?

You're right we do need a draw a line somewhere if the performances are poor for the first X number of games of the season, as the excuses will run out eventually. I just worry that on the evidence of this thread, the line will be drawn unreasonably early for some supporters. I really hope we start reasonably well, as this place will be a horror show if we don't.

Its preseason. I'm relaxed. Still a tiny bit concerned about the number of league games our midfielders have between them. Could do (imo) with another midfield option.

Methinks that’s nonsense, Topper. Read any players post move interviewers and they all say the same thing, club is going places, great manager, decent training facilities, etc it's almost as they've all reading from the same script, the truth usually is we gave them the best deal, I can't see any of those players listed, apart from JML, joining us just because BG was our manager, although we all know BG can talk a good game. Let's see what he can do this week as we've 3 tough looking friendlies coming up.

True - I still look back fondly at the cracking season we had under Buckle following the impressive pre-season results & performances under him.

So are you advocating sacking him after 2 or 3 games if we lose them? I wouldn’t be giving him much longer than that considering he was given a chance last season and presided over a run that nearly saw him go down as the worst manager ever in the football league. I don’t see how 2 wins in 15 league games can be written off as a fluke and all the signs are there from yesterday that nothing has really changed in terms of Garner’s ability to deliver on getting us playing attractive successful football. If we are going to continue hoofing it under Garner we may as well have got down on our knees and begged Coughlan to stay because at least he was good at it. Far from being the young progressive coach and the antidote to Coughlan-ball that he was sold to us as Garner so far is just a poor man’s Coughlan. sh** football without the results. If I was Wael I’d be looking at going back to the drawing board if we’ve won less than 4 of the first 10 games. We need to see some wins early doors so we can at least avoid a shocking run like last season.
