Swindon beat Coventry the other day and then they lost to Ashton today 4 3. They were 4 1 down at half time. Does that mean that are going to challenge?? Or does it mean they are going to get hammered every week as well??? And some of their fans were in attendance to see them get beat by a side in about the seventh tier of the football pyramid.

Another useful training exercise against a good league 2 side, sure the coaches are learning all the time about new signings and trialist's and when the big kick off comes they should know there preferred starting 11 and bench, good to hear JCH among goals hope it cheers him up! yes i am a rose tinter but that's preferable to being one who is itching for Ben Garner to fail isn't it? up the Rovers! Another useful exercise against L2 opposition and the players are learning all the time about Ben Garner before the season kicks off so they can sort out their preferred manager before the season starts.

When fixtures allow I make the occasional visit to FGR. From what I've seen their general style has been retention and knock the ball around at pace through the midfield but have always generally lacked in the final third (Doidge being the exception) The issue for them has been a complete change of squad in the close season which really annoys the locals when they believe they could improve league position the following season. 9 out and 9 in during the close season so if they have settled into that style already then we have a lot of work to do judging by peoples views on todays display

Some time ago just after the new millennium. Rovers beat Premier League West Bromwich Albion 3-2 at the Mem in a pre season friendly.
We finished 23rd in Third Division at the end of season.

In 2009 Norwich lost at home to Colchester 7-1 on the opening day of the season and then got promoted as champions

Funny old game eh... ...and they were not relegated. 2015/2016 Stevenage went into the final game of the season at Accrington and had not kept a clean sheet away from home all season. Look what happened then

I feel short-changed. Why, this week, does no-one feel appalled, embarrassed, shocked and humiliated that the unprofessional J C-H is unfit, out of condition, fat, and disgraceful?

I gave up watching half way through the second half because the streaming was so poor. From what I saw of the match we did not have much physical presence, I am not sure how JCH managed to get two goals he received appalling service. It was clear that we missed AO in midfield, I doubt our manager will see it that way since he puts style over effectiveness. I think our formation should be 5-3-2 with JA alongside JCH up front I agree that we seemed to lack the bite in midfield that Abu Ogogo has given us in the past.
I don't want to over-react from a pre-season game that I could only see 50% of, but from what I saw we struggled to get out of our half for much of the game because FGR pressed our back line throughout.
From what I've seen, Abs is a (much) better player than any of our triallists. IMO we need to reverse the decision to let him go.

I think pre-season should be taken for what it is, however BG needs to act on what went wrong today before the start of the season.
My concern is that it’s hard to go from a losing team to a winning team. Before Covid shut everything down, our form was abysmal. I’ve not forgotten that and I am still anxious about the start of the season, particularly with our first few games being tough.

Agree with 246 re Abs, we need what Abs can bring to the team , good to note that apart from the usual suspects most members see these training games for what they are, just that and will be fully behind Ben and the team from the off.

Watch or turn up to pre season games because it's a bit of fun .catch up with people ,have a beer and joke at the players. Put some cash in the coffers of smaller clubs usually. That's the normal pre season. The result does not matter. So it's different this year, watch the game if you want to see the players or help give the clubs finance. Dont be serious about it. It's about getting minutes into the players without them picking up injuries.
Rovers defenders / midfielders are not going to launch into big tackles in a friendly. They have no desire to risk injuring another player during a friendly.FGR certainly dont want to lose a player to injury from a nothing game neither do Rovers. There are no dirty tricks going on to wind up the opposing player.
It's a tame run around to build match fitness. Nobody goes the extra mile in a friendly.

I recall the excuses that were made back then: he hadn’t had enough time on the training pitch and didn’t have his own players. Now we’ve made some signings and had a big build up to the start of this season the excuses for us being given the run around by Forest Green are that we are being worked too hard in training. I wonder what the excuse will be next week for why Garner still can’t seem to get us looking a cohesive outfit?

Sort of, there just seem to be hints that the old problems are still there: chiefly ineffectual use of the ball, possession for possession’s sake that is in areas of the pitch that don’t hurt the opposition and then struggling when playing it around at the back and then being pressured by teams pressing. That pattern of play goes beyond meaningless friendlies and harks back to Garner’s time here last season. Maybe it’s all just smoke and mirrors to fool any Sunderland affiliated drones that were flying over the pitch to see what we are up to and at the stadium of light for our first real meaningful game we will unleash a game plan of purposeful, sexy passing football....but on the evidence we have seen so far during Garner’s reign that would be one hell of a bloody turn around.

I get your point, but for me, as a player, preseason was about making sure you were in the team on the first day of the season by impressing the manager/coaches.
