Blame the ref when he gives the opposition a dodgy penalty in the last minute and you loose 1-0. You can’t blame the ref for conceding four goals. to be fair he didn’t blame the ref for all four. He said the last two were on us and were poor so we have work to do. If you read the first 12 pages on this thread we are all saying how sh**e the ref was but Ben is not allowed to mention it? The 2 yellow that wasn’t given against Sunderland, the clear push on Leahy today which we all saw. Even the 3rd came as a result of a throw in that we were complaining about because the ref overruled his linesman. As the player if the ref has already made dodgy decisions against you things like the throw in can really grate and it meant the players were properly concentrating on the throw in. It’s a results business and these have been poor, but a though start and for the first half most posting in here said it’s was an improved performance. If I was manager of Bristol Rovers and my squad had been taken apart like it had been today I wouldn't spend 80-90% of the interview focusing on the refs performance I'd be doing my best to convince supporters that I was still up to the job. To do this, complaining about the referees performance would be last on my list as it makes you look like a mug. Supporters aren't idiots. What would I say? I'm not sure, because I'm not a football manager and I don't need to worry about it. But I wouldn't insult my supporters intelligence.

Oh I can see it alright, I just wanted Rovers to win today just a case of my heart ruling my head I’m afraid. But what I don’t need is you rubbing my nose in it, I’ll get enough of that from the Sh1!heads thanks. Well it wasn't intentional. I just want people that can use their heads not their hearts to make what will be an important decision. Please don’t start anymore match day threads, and starting it with a poll to ask people’s opinions on the result is just ridiculous! Even more ridiculous is taking the water out of people when you’ve asked them for their opinion on the result!

No “we” about it. How the players can take him seriously God only knows.

Pretty confident there are lots of posts (probably getting on for over a hundred) saying the first three games are write-offs anyway because Sunderland and Ipswich are too good for us and Doncaster are a bogey team. It would make sense if I'd just dreamt all those posts up though since it's such a completely deluded thing to say but no, sadly, I'm very very confident there are plenty of them. Forget last season, forget the friendlies, forget the cup games and forget the first three games. Fairly sure that was the jist. But did they say the first three games don't actually count towards the ten league games they were giving the manager? Who cares? If something doesn't count it doesn't count. Not counting is the absence of a count.

Garner is right about referees the standard is pathetic in league one The standard of football from Rovers is worse. Garner may be a good coach for young players but he is no manager. There are no guts in this team just pretty footballers

It’s called Psychological projection, its a defense mechanism in which the human ego defends itself by blaming others or things, the ref was port, The pitch bobbly, etc. I was merely commenting on that fact that we seems to be able to justifiably moan about the ref, but slate the manager when he does exactly the same thing.

Has anyone noticed we are bottom of league 1 yet ? We will be there for the foreseeable until the inevitable happens. I don’t think we will pick up another point under Garner.

True, but it doesn't really matter if we sit here whining at the ref. The manager's post match comments are pretty important, I would say, in the way it sets the scene for how the result is recieved by the club, players and fans. Ideally the manager should be using the interview to talk to the fans and to keep them onside; it's one of the key opportunities for crowd management. Most people seem to hate the way Garner whines about the manager. Of course in lockdown it's a lot less important, coz no one will be turning up to see Northampton next week and to shout at him and his team. So, he'll be talking mostly to his team. I can't really comment on what works with the players, Fergie used to be whiny as anything, Mourinho taciturn, Klopp fabulous, but I'm sure they use the interviews as part of their management of the team. If BG thinks that the best way to deflect from his team's shortcomings is to go after the ref, and that's a key part of preparing his players for next week, and this was a carefully considered tactic (even knowing the fans would find it weak and distasteful) then fair play to him, but I highly doubt it. It sounded to be like he was just having a frustrated whine.

How can he grow in character or as a manager if he doesn't look at himself enough? no , but I think we have to acknowledge that the performer of a referee and the decisions he makes can have an impact on the result. We might have won at Sunderland if they had gone down to 10 men, the result today may have been different if we had gone in at half time 1-1.

I respect your opinion but do you really think we had any chance of winning that today? At 2-1 Garner said it was a mountain to climb. What with half the game left? Do you think that shows enough spirit? Doncaster missed three clear cut chances which had no connection with the referee.

I don’t think there was much in the first half, for the 2nd game running to wasted a great chance early on we practically had a 3 on 1 and messed it up. I can’t recall Anssi making any last ditch saves, they had some better chances 2nd half but we were chasing and heads were down. Call me a fool but I will have money on us getting a win next week.

I thought last week we were improving and I thought soon we will win and I think soon we still will unless all our confidence is drained from us. Despite the result I was more angry at his interview. Politicians get away with it because we don't see what goes on, but with football it's different and like today I feel it insults our intelligence tbh.
