Alf Garnet was satire but was very much before it's time. All the people that thought he was a working class hero were the ones being ridiculed. As someone who, in my mid/late teens admired the writing in that show (Johnny Speight) I think we knew that he was taking the P?!s out of ignorance. His biting humour aimed squarely at ignorant racism, misogyny and nationalism. Although the Garnet character drew most attention the role of Cheri Blair's father, Tony Booth, playing a working class lefty was pivotal in driving home the point. I will never forget the scene where, after a drunken debate, he threw a drink over the portrait of the queen. I very much doubt we would see that today. The context in the media was that comedy seen as edgy was primarily driven by "clever" people like David Frost and John Cleese.(Oxbridge in other words) Till Death do us Part was the first working class comedy that laid it out as it was. Brilliant. On a par with Love Thy Neighbour?

Christ I just took a look at the other forum - OldGas basically saying white people are the UKs indigenous population. It’s astonishing how racist of a comment that is. I wonder what his take is on taking the knee. I bet I can guess. And normal service has resumed. 😶 Indigenous makes me smile. Last year I read an encyclopedia of world history, (as one does) and the stand out memory is of constant flows of people. Move east 1000 miles, children, move west 2000 miles, children, 500 miles north, children jump on boats and end up wherever. The native Indians of North American being from Mongolia, and south American Indians being those who moved further through the Americas. I maybe wrong but I think the 1st humans (maybe not anthropologically the correct term) of Mainland Britain were pretty dark skinned, which led to pretty dark skinned celts. So the indigenous argument basically starts from where you wish to start from history. Has anyone here had a DNA check to see your ethnic make up?

The further back in time I got, the more oldgas I had in my genes. I had to stop before I reached some other placental mammal.

He also ignored the usual name calling, which is strange when he labeled it the place for polite debate.

Reading his posts though it’s obvious where his political affiliations lie ( which is cool) but to allow such blatant and in your face racism by that absolute f**k wit Oldgas is embarrassing and a stain on that forum .

I see even THD is calling him out on a few things , maybe he has so redeeming qualities? 🤔
