Why is every story in this thread about military action against our perceived economic rivals... It's always, lets threaten to bomb China and Russia for doing what we used to do when we had an empire. Is it? Apologies if that is how it comes across as that is exactly the opposite of what I have intended.

Most big international stories on the 10 o'clock news and front pages just always seem the same. It's interesting but frustrating. Colonialism never stopped, it was just rebranded in various ways. Neo-colonialism.

If the international finance community refused to transact Russian oligarch money then that would really squeeze Putin. Just like Middle Eastern Oil petro dollars or Chinese stealing intellectual property we wont. On a military front, if we were serious about supporting Ukraine, then why does NATO not deploy to the Black Sea? We wont because Germany is so reliant on Russian energy imports. On your first point, agreed. We have been happy to 'look after' their money for a while now. On your second, NATO has deployed to the region, but the Montreux Convention restricts the numbers, types of ships and duration allowed by non Black Sea nations. Your knowledge on these matters is far greater than mine. Is Russia a signatory to the Montreux Convention?

As the USSR it is, but it is also exempted i a degree insofar as it is a Black Sea nation (along with Romania, Bulgaria, etc). The key player is Turkey, they are the ones who are responsible for access. Whichever way this plays out, I can't see NATO doing anything overt bar some token deployments to member states. There is a training and support package going on to Ukraine forces.

What is going on here? "The UN has called for the United Arab Emirates to provide "concrete" proof that Princess Latifa Al Maktoum, the daughter of Dubai's ruler reportedly being held in detention, is alive. In a statement issued in Geneva on Tuesday, UN human rights experts also said she should be released "urgently"." www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-56820707

Indonesian submarine missing and low on oxygen. The sub is 44 years old! Who'd want to go to work in a submarine made in the 1970s? reut.rs/2Pfayz3

What is the time they vociferously seem to yearn for, 1960s? Interesting that the 50s/60s were a time of socialist ideas for the people, and not big business & corporations.

As a child of the 50s and a sixth former in the late 60s it was very youth led. The older generations, 30+, like my parents, looked down on us with disgust. Not so much for holding a left wing political view, but because really we wanted overturn everything.

But is it just a human trait that older generations look down on the young? Not me personally, but as I get older the amount of times I hear people exclaiming 'kids these days' is ridiculous.

Look at the vitriol aimed at Greta Thunberg, and language used to describe younger people who had the audacity to protest against totalitarianism and racism, by certain members of this forum before they migrated to the other forum where they cower in a corner pointing at all the vile people on this forum. You have to laugh

I think it just may be that, the other day I witnessed a schoolboy running up to a lady on a scooter. What did he do? He pointed out she had got some debris stuck under her wheel and helped her clear it. Like most generations, there are good ones and bad ones.
