The fact with football today is that the main young talent is being horded by the Premiership and the majority that are left are unlikely to make the standard of League football. In fact only a small proportion of the youngsters who turn out in the Premiership teams under 21s will actually make it even into a League Two club.It was always hard to become a proffessional footballer as so many end up failing and always have. The gems are there but finding them is as much luck as good judgement.Hulberts recent record at a reasonable non league level would suggest if he keeps it up he could warrant a place on the bench and a chance. 100% right. Its something daft like 0.012% of U9's going into Academy football will ever play at league level. There are so many variables during that period, and it isn't just about the players ability either.

Surely the percentage is the same as it's always been otherwise overall playing numbers would be reducing, as players retired or dropped out of league football? If the Premiership are soaking up all the decent talent don't we need to now concentrate on picking up the best of those players when they are released by the Premiership clubs?

In his excellent book No Hunger In Paradise, Michael Calvin quotes the figure of 0.012%. www.businessinsider.com/michael-calvin-shocking-statistic-why-children-football-academies-will-never-succeed-soccer-sport-2017-6

Good luck to both of them, hope it gets them ready for a pre-season with the Gas in the summer Any news on Phillips at Swindon SM?

Totally, ive said this for a while now. Everton in particular seem to be a good source of talent which have benefitted clubs in the lower levels. Southampton pick up a lot of players from the south west area yet we dont see any relationship with them of late.

I understand exactly what you are saying, unfortunately for us when talking about Saints or other academy players that are released, they generally end up anywhere other than us. (Pains me to say but our neighbours across the river pick up most first) We just don’t have the infrastructure at academy level, facilities and the coaches are just not good enough. That’s me not being negative, just realistic. That’s the clubs choice as to where to direct their funds in the way they see fit. I completely respect that. Currently we just can not compete with the local clubs around us for released players.

Personally once it's certain we can't get relegated or into the playoffs I would have hoped at least some of these youngsters would get some game time in league football in the latter games of the season.
Guess that's very unlikely now. Not sure if Barton has that much interest in trying to develop home grown players. Never know for sure whether it's lack of ability or a failure to develop potential talent. Won't be singing 'he's one of our own' very often I fear.
Some won't care but I think there is something special in watching home-grown youngsters develop into first team players. But must admit it's a rare occurrence in recent years.

I know a city fan who’s sons joined southamptons academy over city and rovers but said rovers knew more about his son and were the best with him and his family but due to our academy rating couldn’t offer what Southampton could, another guy I know knows a city fan who said the same but chose city cause of his loyalty. It goes to show our scouts are about and do they’re research we just can’t offer what our rivals can.

Sometimes it pays off to play the youngsters in the first team and let them improve with better players around them. Premiership clubs are looking at Benny Couto (18) and Harry Vaughan (17) both of Oldham. Neither have played more than 20 games but Oldham could make a fortune from them

I think we are still looking for another Striker in the window, one that is young, fit, and hungry. We have one plying his trade in a league that is clearly not challenging the kid, and he's only 18 or 19 and is on 8 in 9 in 10 games or something like that. Bring him back and give the kid a go. If Premier league teams throw in the occasional youngster here and their, why cant we. The quicker the Academy get over themselves and understand that they are not at Man U, Chelsea or however, the better chance we have of both improving and perhaps making some money down the line.

Surely it’s the first team manager that chooses whether to play the youngsters in the first team. He is the root of the problem (and all others ) do you have a connection to the Academy? You seem to have a very dim view?

It’s more a case if you’re good enough, you’re old enough rather than you’re old enough you must be nearly good enough.

In defence of Cam Hargreaves I would argue that he’s never been given a sustained run, the odd start and odd 10 mins here and there

You seem to have a very dim view? I agree it should be down to the first team manager. However it does need to have some process behind it. What relationship does the first team coaching staff have with the academy, what is the owners objectives and KPI when instructing the first team management etc etc. You are right ultimately the first team manager makes the decision on who is in the match day squad. But this is down to his remit from the owner and what is ultimately presented to him by the Academy manager, and that is the key question for a number of years.

The same amount probably make it at Prem Championship level, however at L1 Especially L2 academy level, it is far more difficult to go up the Leagues, than it is to get a Club coming down the leagues. That is down purely to the standard of Coaches most importantly, then the facilities etc ect
