Corbyn being blocked from standing as a Labour candidate, likely to stand as an independent. Worked for Ken Livingston. Hope Islington is a little more thoughtful. Corbyn has been harshly treated by the moderates in the Labour party. I think he might have been guilty of being slow or afraid to crack down on some of his more extreme followers who were indirectly or directly anti Semitic, but there's surely no suggestion he was himself like that? Maybe that's reason enough to get rid of him for some people, but it seems a tough punishment to me. He was a faithful servant of the party for a long time and led it well for a while, even if his views were never going to be appealing to middle England. A censure and warning would have worked I think. It's not as if he was ever going to get into power. I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong. It has been known. Completely disagree. The objective of any political grouping / party is to gain power in order to implement the ideas that the electorate voted for. He was inept in this regard. On the question of anti semitism I doubt that he was/is an antisemite. What he is, is a believer in the plight of the Palestinians, views that personally I share. Again, on this, he recognises the role the west has played in this disaster. Again, a view I share. But he never effectively articulated this view, instead he came across as an upset sixth former trying to make himself feel better. Finally, I will never forgive him over Brexit, he sat on the fence for so long that any hope we had of carrying that wing of the party faded to nothing.

I'm with you, always struck me as a politician stuck in the 1930s,nothing against him personally, get the sense that Starmer is a "trophy" leader likes to have something up on the wall to prove he's in charge. It's an immature way to lead and speaks volumes of his own vulnerability. Disagree. Starmer has to beat the Tories, not pander to the (mainly) Tory media headlines that he has no policies. The Tories hate him in the same way they hated Blair, they know he can beat them. That's why.

I don't see there was any need to take the action he did ,perhaps to prove strong leadership,no dissent, discipline etc.

Corbyn is toxic to 70% of the voting public and just having him back in the party would arm the Tories with just the attack lines they’d be looking for . Corbyn was bloody useless anyway , stayed schtum over Brexit ( that’s worked out well hasn’t in Clive ? 🙄)….didn’t have the nouse to realise that flooding the zone with too many policies instead of just picking four or five main ones ( he did have some good ones ) could of worked. Instead , he had so many nobody believed he could carry them out as it became outlandish . Not forgetting his complete Wishy washyness on antisemitism, liking that poster on Facebook etc .

Have to agree with Oldie and Yatton here. Corbyn did well in the 2017 GE in part in having a reasonable manifesto, not being Theresa May and possibly because he remained relatively fresh.
However, I can't forgive him on the security aspects (refused to blame Putin over the Salisbury poisonings, for example) nor for his lacklustre campaign during Brexit. He then went totally Tonto over the 2019 GE throwing all sorts of promises out and became ridiculous. That gave us Boris and an 80 seat majority.
I see this move having several benefits to Starmer, he kicks out a serial rebel, it clips the wings if the far left of the party, it sends a signal to the electorate he and Labour are back on the centre ground and it may be personal too over Brexit and antisemitism.
Provided Islington elect Labour rather than Corbyn, it's a shrewd move.

Looks like Trump is facing prosecution, that'll get his supporters riled.
Hungary and Turkey agree to Finland joining Nato, formal offer and acceptance letters yo follow shortly. No progress on Sweden although that's not quite so important as Finland had the physical border.
Pension age rise to 68 being deferred as we aren't living so long. That's a bonus, eh!?!

Lovely, wonder if Suella Braverman will send them to Rwanda. "A group of Nepalese security guards who were rescued from the fall of Kabul in 2021 are facing removal from the UK, 19 months later. The 13 Nepalese military veterans - known as Gurkhas - were employed guarding the UK embassy in Kabul. Their lawyers say their legal right to remain in the UK since their rescue has been "voided" by the Home Office. A Home Office spokesman denied anyone with a permanent right to live in the UK had had it removed. The men, who are Nepalese and Indian nationals aged between 37 and 60, were working for a private security firm that guarded the compound housing the UK and Canadian embassies in Kabul. Removal directions for the group are scheduled to begin on Thursday 6 April. Bam Gurung, 37, who worked for 10 years as an embassy security guard, told the BBC he had hoped to start a new life in the UK and serve in the Army. He said: "We are very, very saddened. [For] two days I have cried with my friend, I cry with my mum. "I would have made good life in the UK and I would have contributed to the UK government." Jamie Bell, of Duncan Lewis Solicitors, said: "All were evacuated on the same flight and all of their claims were processed together. It is entirely unclear as to why there has been a difference in treatment between them. "We have received no clarity from the Home Office as to why having evacuated these brave men, they are now being treated in an inhumane and cruel way." Mr Bell said the immigration status of five of the men appeared to have been settled until the surprise raid. Eight others had been told they were ineligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) status after the Home Office applied on their behalf following the Kabul rescue." www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-65182440

Can’t believe we have to wait until Jan 2025 for the next GE.

Can’t believe we have to wait until Jan 2025 for the next GE. Government don't tend to like winter elections as the cold, dark nights puts off many casual voters with those motivated (usually against the incumbents) coming out. The mood music is Autumn 2024. 18 months to go.

Whoops!😃 "Nicola Sturgeon's husband, Peter Murrell, has been arrested in connection with an investigation into the funding and finances of the Scottish National Party (SNP). The former SNP chief executive is in custody and is being questioned by detectives. Police Scotland said a 58-year-old man was arrested as part of an ongoing investigation. Officers are also carrying out searches at a number of addresses, the force added. A large police tent has been set up outside the couple's Glasgow home - while officers have also been seen at the SNP's headquarters in Edinburgh." news.sky.com/story/man-58-arrested-in-connection-with-snp-funding-and-finances-12850333

I have a feeling we have seen the high water mark of the independence movement.

Anything to do with the Conservatives being in government and making policies? If the Conservative leaning media isn't reporting events then maybe there is a reason.

Rather than look at the name of the media outlet, read and listen to what they write and say. The evidence then is overwhelming. It depends on what you’re considering left, right and neutral. I would concede that the supposedly left wing outlets don’t champion things like 20th century left wing positions like nationalising industries, expansion in state benefits etc (guardian probably the only one who does the latter) There’s kind of 2 things going on here. Traditional left wing politics (which I believe you’re judging it on) and modern liberalism. The media is overwhelmingly liberal. It’s overwhelmingly pro EU. Anyone who claims the BBC or the media were for brexit, we have to end discussion as our viewpoints are so alien we can’t agree on the fundamentals. In modern parlance “left” can be summed up as: Pro globalism and open borders Supportive of pride and questioning the nuclear family Critical of western history and narrative Supportive of criminalisation of hate speech Supportive of environmentalism Pro regulation of business Right, as follows; Critical of open borders Supportive of traditional family values Pro freedom of speech Pro independence I agree that if you’re an old school leftie there is literally nothing for you other than parts of the guardian. Similarly, if you’re a new money type Tory who is actually not fussed about migration but you want free trade and less government, there’s very little for you either. You’re stuck with the Mail. Or the old money telegraph. A lot of people don’t fit boxes but I think a better way of saying it is the media are pro liberal but not traditionally left wing. To say they’re all for conservative value and old school basic conservatism is pretty wide of the mark but they are not critical enough of big business.
