I think it's his 2nd half tactics that are the reason for criticism. Trying to waste time from the start of the half and inviting pressure.

Grealish missed an absolute sitter. Had we gone in 3-0 it would have been a totally different 2nd half and Southgate would have shored us up sooner.

A huge win over there no question, result all that mattered in the hardest Group game first up, but that rancid second half was on the players tonight.
Everything decent first half completed disappeared, Jude & Rice went from running the entire match to mere passengers from the very first second half whistle. Saka, Grealish, could name a few more. Very unlike this England side, we came out like the job was already done & merely had to trot about for 45 more mins.
But still, went & beat Italy on their patch first time since 1961 & inflicted their first Qualifying defeat in 41 matches! In the so called ‘cauldron’ Maradona ground. Our first half showing reduced it to a mere library.,Some win.
Will win the group comfortably from here.

Pleased to see Kane overtake Rooney as top England goalscorer. I never liked the attitude of the scowling one.
I think Kane has probably got a higher % of his goals from penalties though, which obviously don't count.

Kane - 18 pens scored in 81 appearances Rooney - 7 pens scored in 120 appearances Worth noting that for a long time Lampard was Englands regular pen taker during Wazza’s international career (9 scored) |

Just putting this out there. I know pens are important and take skill to convert, but there are undoubtedly a lot more given in modern times.
England goals from open play:
Charlton 46 from 106 caps
Rooney 46 from 120
Greaves 44 from 57
Lineker 44 from 80
Owen 39 from 89
Kane 36 from 81
Kane may well go past them all, of course, but it’s not a given. Charlton as a midfielder and Greaves’ totals are mightily impressive. Greaves never took a pen for England.
