The National league is tough to climb out of , we were so fortunate to crack it first time of asking, this will be an unpopular view but DC must take some of the responsibility for our relegation to the National BUT my goodness we were so lucky that he led us in that season. He had the experience at non-league, knew what it was all about and after a shaky start got the message home to players and fans that if we did not 'embrace' the experience we would be in big trouble, i look back on that season with pride in the way we treated the experience and tremendous admiration for the teams and fans who followed them, their dedication left a lasting positive impression on me and was a lesson in what being a fan is all about, those who chase the cash in the top league will have absolutely no idea what i mean and they are the poorer for it IMHO, I look at the teams in the National now and shudder, there but for 5 brilliant penalties go Rovers , Phew it was a close shave!

Exeter look like being the first of the promoted teams to reach the magic 52. What have they done better than us do we think. Also. Would take both Notts County’s scorers next season if we sell Collins. They recruited well across the summer, Sam Nombe has been an excellent signing, one who’d I go after, especially if we sold Collins. Jay Stansfield is a just a ridiculous signing for this level, only made possible due to his late fathers connection with the club. Javani Brown has suddenly clicked with league football. He has always had potential, but never shown any signs of really fulfilling it, but this year has had an excellent season. Blackman is a great keeper at this level. A lot of their defence made the step up a division (we lost the strength of our defence) and they have some pace on their flanks (we lost all our pace on the flanks) For example, this year we’ve had Clarke, Gordon and since Jan McDonald at LB, they have Caprice, who’s pacey, strong and defends well. All in all, they had a stronger base squad than us last year, which is why they finished 2nd and arguably should have won it which transitioned very well into L1 combined with some great recruitment. We need to have a blinding summer window this year.

They've taken 4 points from us and we are 7 points behind with a game in hand. Fine margins. This question can also be asked about why we will we get to X points ahead of FGR who came up as champions..

Some very interesting answers. Good club Exeter and shows the benefit of a little more continuity between seasons. We again will have another mass change, which could go either way. Hopefully a spine of continuity with some great additions will lead to a top 10 finish.

This question can also be asked about why we will we get to X points ahead of FGR who came up as champions..Slightly more easier to answer. They lost Rob Edwards to Watford, a good manager who played good football and scouted some excellent young talent out of the Scottish championship. Kane Wilson went to Bristol City. Ebou Adams went to Cardiff. Nicky Cadden went to Barnsley. Dan Sweeney went to Stevenage. Luke McGhee went to Derby. Its hard to replace that kind of talent. I wasnt surprised that Adams, Wilson and Cadden got moves but I was surprised they let Sweeney go, absolute rock for them in defence last year but they lost the whole core of their attacking talent in one window. Very hard when you are stepping up a division too, when you are going to be the smallest club in the division who can't pay the wages of other clubs to even be an attraction or consideration. On top of that, 25 goal Matty Stevens did his ACL in at the end of last year so missed all of this season and he's gone on loan to Walsall as I doubt he will be up to the rigours of L1 now.

Hopefully a spine of continuity with some great additions will lead to a top 10 finish. Different approaches in someways, they have a tried and tested system which Steve Perryman and Alex Inglethorpe set up which has produced many good players or developed players signed from local non league clubs. I think they have 4 permanent starters in their side that have come through the academy (without looking at their squad profiles). It will be interesting how Gary Caldwell takes them forward and whether he can build on what Matty Taylor produced over the previous 4 years. It's clear JB likes young and desirous players that he can mould and teach as opposed to old dogs that refuse to learn new tricks. His style and philosophy and whether a player fits into it will come before just having another body in the building.

There is one "golden ticket" in The Grecians fairy tale. They have made substantial funds in the transfer market in the last decade.
Ampadu, Wheeler, Pond, Stockley, Storey, Randall, Grimes and Tom Nichols! The Grecians have pocketed over £9m from these 8 players.
Exeter City have so far received OVER SEVEN MILLION POUNDS from the departure of Ollie Watkins alone.
Almost £2m from the sale to Brentford.
Over £4m in sell-on fees from the move to Aston Villa.
Add-ons have subsequently accrued over £1m.
There are other small add-ons still possible.
A significant portion, about £3m, of this has been spent on upgrading pitches and facilities at the Cliff Hill Training Ground, just outside Clyst St. Mary on the Sidmouth Road.
The remaining £4 million has been spent on some stadium improvements and coaching and playing staff.
Exeter's recent journey has been based on these transfer deals. It's by no means certain that the search for gold will remain successful.

It's by no means certain that the search for gold will remain successful. They have a structure and it's working. They are rightly proud of their academy who were paraded around the pitch at half time last night. Paul Tisdale insisted that as much of the financial gains from player sales was reinvested into the pitch and training ground as possible and Matt Taylor carried on that philosophy. Somebody said that Jay Stansfield is only at Exeter on loan because of his late Father. There is that obvious link but Jay was also a product of the Exeter City Academy before being sold to Fulham. The new manager has made some quality signings with Kevin MacDonald being the pick of them. This summer will be a test when several key players are out of contract and Jevani Brown looks to have played his last game following his suspension for his off field antics after assaulting a woman by beating. Yes they have been lucky in the transfer market but it is the luck that goes with the model that they have created. Remember, zero income from a single director and only £98k a year from the fans via The Trust.

Jay Stansfield has a worse scoring rate at Exeter than Collins,Coburn,Marquis and Loft this season. Wouldn't say he's a ridiculous signing for this level. His stats are average at best.

I think you need to see him play and not just look at stats. Even the Barnsley manager described him as unplayable last night. Add to that he has just turned 20 and already has Premier League games under his belt. He was being watched by quite a few Championship Managers last night including Nigel Pearson and it wouldn't surprise me if he ended up at Bristol City on loan next season for the next stage of his development.

Hes been a great signing at this level. Even though he’s not been scoring his team play XG is very high and has provided 13 goal contributions this year. That’s better than Loft and Marquis and just behind Coburn.

I have only seen Stansfield play against Rovers and did watch some of him against Plymouth. I thought he only looked a average player in these games but admittedly that's a small look at his performance this season. He may turn out to be a great player but at this moment I wouldn't swap him for any of the strikers we have. If you both have watched him a lot more than me then you are in a better place to judge.

You wouldn't swap him for Loft or Marquis? Not on his goal scoring stats and what I've seen live of him. Loft and Marquis better scoring stats from fewer appearances. Stansfield might be good in the future but not for me at the present time.

Whilst on the Stansfield subject. I was talking to Adams Mum on Saturday and the Adam Stansfield Foundation has cash available for grass roots football for under 16's. Any local teams looking for kit or equipment should apply to the Adam Stansfield Foundation. They do not finance or fund sponsorship. www.adamstansfieldfoundation.com/apply-for-funding/

Think we've slightly strayed away from the topic of how recent games have affected us.

Talking of Plymouth I see they’ve sold almost 40,000 tickets for the Papajohns Trophy final . Impressive.

The form since then has stuttered at best and the possibility of a nice day out (for those not boycotting) would have put a huge positive spin on our first season back in L1.

Wednesday stutter yet again. That is another poor result on the road for them, 1 point from 3 games. The chasing couple of sides must be buzzing now.
