Good points, but disagree about Marquis. I think in terms of hold up play alone, I agree with you, but in front of goal his feet do not seem quick enough. He’s scuppered a handful of half chances like the one that came across the 6 yard box tonight and when he rounded the keeper at 0-0 against Cambridge. I really hope he can prove me wrong. I still think we are a better team with Marquis in it rather than having no No.9 in the starting eleven. It’s a shame he couldn't get a goal to boost confidence.

Taylor is not good enough playing out from the back, we take too long to get it forward it puts him under pressure to force a pass, which leads to trouble. He’s not in the side to play it out, love the bloke.
Grant was very good tonight, real bonus having him back. I also think Gibbons isn’t a good player he should have left but provides decent backup

He'll find his form. You could say the same things about AC. Fluffed a couple of 1v1s this season, underhit/overhit simple passes, slow to react to 2nd balls etc. It's just not clicked for a few of them yet for various reasons.

Just been listening to JB after the game, he said we need to have multiple systems and it will take time to flow.
Hopefully not too long Joey!
Interesting he said we played 4-3-3 last night
I didn’t watch, but who played along the back line?

What a lovely move for the first goal! Excellent work for the Collins goal by JM Also very nice to see Anthony Evans doing Anthony Evans things again. If he keeps that up the contributions will be double figures this year so let’s hope it happens in the league also.

Think Bogarde went to RB when Gibbons came off and Vale moved to the right wing once Gordon came on.

Enjoyed the win but it was a strange game - As I said in my earlier post I thought Cheltenham would score - It's what we do as a team we break other teams bad runs.
Cheltenham were massively under strength and it really showed - gave us way too much room and we profited from that. Cheltenham truly should have equalised to make things 1-1 and it may have been a slightly stiffer test if that had happened.
Had to laugh as it was a tiny crowd as expected but when I arrived someone was in my seat and claimed they also purchased it - Whatever !
Anyway marks as we saw them ...
Belshaw -6 ... Almost nothing to do and I really felt for him when he was beaten by awful Gibbons defending.
Gibbons -6 ... Purely for scoring the first goal - His defending for Cheltenhams goal was circus like and without him and Connolly our defence seems much stronger. Back up player only for me.
Taylor -6 Awful distribution at times and a little rusty maybe as he was clumsy on the ball. Good in the air. Will get better.
Grant - 7 Thought he did well and starting to look like the gem JB claims him to be.
Vale - 6 Surely he poses more threat further up the pitch don't understand what JB is doing here
Evans - 7 Decent game got stuck in and a wonderful strike for the second goal.
Bogarde - 8 Excellent going forward would like him to shoot more
McCormick -6 Had a silly five minutes when he got booked and didn't think he added that much
Brown - 6 Still to see the best of him and again didn't add that much.
Marquis - 6 Needs a goal and was gutted when he saw the linesman flag go up after a neat finish. Good captaincy though.
Collins - 7 A goal at last that nearly broke the net and a willingness to shoot form distance again. Hopefully he pushes on now.
Subs - Sinclair was lively and Woods looks like a real find. Other than that not much to shout about.
For me Bogarde / Evans and possibly Grant were the only ones to send JB the message of being starters alongside Collins.
Win is a win though - we can go deep into this tournament with the squad we have - the real scrap will come at the back end when other sides have their first choice starters out as well.

It's hard to read much into that game. Cheltenham were already on a poor run and had people playing out of position in defence following early injuries. At one point they had 2 full backs at CB, a LB at RB and CM as LB

If he had taken the shot quickly with his left foot at this point below he could have scored, but hesitated and the chance was gone. Attachment Deleted

Difficult to judge how good we were because Cheltenham were so poor. Already bottom of L1 and missing a lot of players last night, and lost a few more during the game.
We won't play a weaker side all season, even if we draw non league opposition in the cup.
With the exception of one break where Cheltenham missed an open goal, we completely dominated after we took the lead. It was good to see some progressive football, and in the first half, McCormick, Evans, Bogarde and Collins all looked good.
Still need more from Brown and Marquis in my opinion, and Taylor looked clumsy at times. Tough to judge the defence really because Cheltenham had nothing in attack.
Second half wasn't as good. First half we had 12 shots to their 1. Second half 6 shots to their 4.
Bogarde has to start at Shrewsbury, and as others have said, Woods and Evans should also be in the starting 11. I also think McCormick should be at least on the bench because he makes some good forward runs.

Concerning that even against a side as poor as Cheltenham, I turned off last night unmoved on my first pick CB’s in Wilson & Cramerrrrrr. Taylor still has plenty of rust to get rid of.

Taylor slows the game down by dwindling on the ball. The whole playing at a higher tempo starts from the defenders moving the ball quickly right from the start. We didn't move the ball quickly enough from defence on Saturday as well. What was different last night was both Evans and Bogarde came deep to collect the ball before moving at pace. Ward and Finley want too much time on the ball and are too slow and pedestrian to play together. Mccormick Bogarde and Evans were a breath of fresh air last night.

The midfield was transformed Saturday with Evans sharpness & it was plain for all to see last night too. He is everywhere, high energy, always offering for the ball & moving things quickly when he gets it. As you say the difference to the side overall when he is in it, is massive.

Its a squad game so no excuses for Cheltenham. Rovers played with a 2nd choice keeper , a midfielder at centreback and an attacking player at full back (vale).the other full back and centreback have not been first choice so far. Cant give Cheltenham a much better chance of getting their first goal.
Good overall performance. Was glad to see players shooting from distance as well as the tippy tappy in the box stuff.

Best news to come about from the match was that Collins scored. That lad needed a goal, even if it was in a cr8p Trophy. Head up Chap, start banging them again.

It's probably easier to play at pace when you've nobody snapping at your heels, or should that really be kicking at your shins?, as soon as you get the ball. Let's see if they can move the ball about as quickly v Shrewsbury, who I assume will still be playing negative football under their new manager.
