Dude wants to say the word sprint again. Apparently he didn't like what he saw in the first half either 🙈

I just read some more posts on the Wigan forum. Some more even handed posts which said basically we play the kind of football they are trying to play, but we just did it better. I think that was the right analysis.
The first 30 mins it was clear Wigan’s approach was the same as ours but the difference was that we actually played it out from the back successfully and they struggled to. Also, our forwards were all over their back line but they didn’t press anywhere near as much and let us have the ball much more. They looked a bit like we did last season. Consensus is that we were clinical, up for it but Wigan were a bit weak and didn’t offer much resistance.
I think that’s fair analysis. I would point to several moments where we had some incredible one touch stuff which carved them open. Thomas’ goal was one hell of a move.
Just shows when we can move the ball quickly we can destroy quite good teams.
Possession: 50/50 today. Not the 70/30 as usual.
What will be absolutely key to getting out of this league is Joey and the team figuring out how to beat the low block. We can see clearly what happens if teams try to play our game and fight us man to man - we smash their heads in, basically. We are very good at actually playing football. What we must figure out is what happens when we fight a slugger who keeps his guard up and throws the odd haymaker.

Just got back..
Wow what a funny day all round and great to see some old faces, one in particular it might be first time this century! Nice to catch up, T ... in the usual haunt I probably saw you last time!? Oh how the cider flowed... And the reprobates too! A beautiful sunglasses day - which would've come in handy on East side at times, but nay, all around the place with our dazzling approach play.
I particularly liked the just stop satan protests at the end of filton ave/glos rd.
Muchas better than trying to stop oil....try doing that in deepest winter!
And, even in winter, just try stopping our juggernaut of fast flowing free thought football?
Which leads us into anyhoos, onto something less important:
Yep I guess by technical k o, Hunt deserved m o m with a goal and assist. He did have a wonderful match. Worthy winner. Great goal at important time.
But....that didn't tell half the story. So many upped their game from what I saw last time round, including my personal m o m, Sam Finley. I thought he was the much improved player. Dogged and determined, his midfield prowess was just how we remember him. First to the ball and hungry... dangerous. Never allowed them to settle and was instrumental in is dominating the mid. Nice assist too, more alert and quick to the ball for Aaza to cooly finish
Also, ably supported and another power performance from Bogarde
So we went to a back 3.... lovely contribution there from Josh Grant. Mopped up everything, good link with HV and looking very natural in that place.
Jewel in crown, CT for me...Wyke had a lucky deflection when we mistakenly thought keeper was fouled but apart from that, he had Wyke in his pocket.... extremely quiet game from him.
Lovely contribution from LT and cut in and finish - wish he would try that more often - that got us going. With the run of play, at the time.
Just a delight to see Aaza enjoy his football again!? Took his goal well and linked up with JM whom rolled back the years in true centre forward fashion to score a header(?) What's that all about? .... courtesy of a much improved, much more forward AE. Excellent match from him.
Whether Wigan had issues, (I know Humphries was kind of disciplined) or injuries , but they rarely turned up and if you were a neutral, you'd probably think we were the championship team last season. On this display, may be we will next?
So.......is something starting to click?
Has JAB started unlocking some of the potential?
With Wilson, Krama, Woods, Brown just a few names waiting in the wings, the long season some may have dreaded potentially look very appealing with this form.
Do we dare to dream? UptheGas!

Also as an afterthought... Great to see on each goal, the spontaneity of ALL our players going to celebrate with the goalscorer, leaving the Wigan team to ponder on their own what went wrong!
Great team spirit, there!

I don't think so, but glad some people are enjoying the football. Our play in the first 30 was pedestrian, predictable and littered with mistakes. We have some fantastic players and in flashes we really turn it on and are unplayable. I'm amazed anybody is posting anything negative tonight on the match thread, after the rubbish we've had to suffer in L1 since DC lost his way. You are amazed? That is many football fans in a nutshell right there. Lose and its doom and gloom. Win and its all smiles. I'm sorry but it should be completely ok to highlight good and bad things in a game regardless of the result. If you can't handle that, then it is a very naive way to follow professional sport. Of course there were negatives yesterday! Collins gave the ball away from 2 of his first 3 involvements. Taylor spent far to much tome on the ball for their goal. Collins was greedy and could have put Thomas through 1 on 1 again in the second half. The East stand lino was sh**. Our crowd was completely flat for 90% of the first half. We can do better if we want to have a good season, otherwise yesterday will become a freak result.

Another post praising Grant. I have stood by him on here and was pleased he was given another chance. I will admit I didn’t think he’d be as good as a CB as he was today. Hope he keeps that up as that really gets us out of a hole. (Just home 6 hours to do 100 miles thanks to a 4 hour stop on the M4) Fair play to JB and Wael for standing by him and funding the ops and his rehabilitation and then offering him a new contract. I wonder how many other lower league clubs would have just shown him the door?

Blimey a good honest interview by an opposing manager after a defeat!

I was thinking the same thing, I think we're capable of playing the 'footballing' sides and beating them quite often, it's the ones that sit back and invite us to break them down we need a way of playing against. As the team clicks, as it clearly did yesterday, then we might not need to change things but we have to learn to win ugly sometimes.

Was a back four. Then varied between 4-2-3-1 and 4-1-4-1 Noticed at times our two central defenders split very wide to allow full backs to move on and therefore the wide men to move up to a three. Note, three out of the four came from crosses.

Home early after negotiating the car park better for once .... What a cracking game ... Must admit I totally got that wrong at 2pm when i saw the team... Anyway here are our marks ... Cox - 7 ... Pretty faultless - good punching under pressure from the gorilla Wyke, distribution a different class from the midweek keeper. Vale - 7 Very good full debut and put in an excellent shift at LB Taylor - 7 Won most things in the air and scrapped hard - distribution getting better Grant - 8 Excellent at CB - Distribution brilliant and fought really well in the air - Would cement him in there now. Hunt - 9 - Love this guy!! Quality throughout and a goal + an assist to Big John. Finley - 8.5 I have been his biggest critic but today he was outstanding - led by example - terrific in the tackle and had a few shots at goal as well. Evans - 7 - Got kicked throughout but another really good hardworking display and drove us forward Bogarde - 7 Seems to take some time to settle into games but some nice touches and worked hard Thomas - 8 Excellent performance capped with a nice goal Collins - 7 Worked hard - created chances and got a deserved goal Big John - 7 Worked hard - got pushed and shoved and a cracking header for his goal Subs - Collective 6 - No one really stood out but did enough to see out the game Joe Barton - 7 Well I thought he had got the selection wrong but what do i know ? Josh Grant at CB and Harvey Vale at LB was inspired - Clearly told the boys to shoot more this week and it paid off. Referee Team - 5 - Very poor at times and some of his decision making will have made the assessor weep!! Fans- Strong 7 - Noisey at times and supported well - Loyalty rewarded today Wigan - 5 - Looked really good in the warm up - really good. I thought we would struggle against Wyke + Aasgaard but wasn't he case. So a thoroughly enjoyable game - is this the sign of things to come - we shall see Certainly taught me that we have more strength in depth than I thought Have a great weekend everyone. The ‘midweek goalkeeper’ was our player of the season 2 years ago, absolutely key to getting us promoted, and remains a decent 1st Divison goalie…..no idea why you feel the need to be so disrepectful

Yes. Vale was left back. Got forward first half a lot which was great but left us open at the back. Much more controlled 2nd half. Was excellent. Understand Gordon was doing pre match exercises on the pitch on his own so hopefully nothing long term
