Reading have rejected Millwall’s approach for forward Femi Azeez as the Royals hope to keep hold of the 23-year-old this summer, according to reports from the Reading Chronicle. The paper received confirmation that Millwall’s bid was formally rejected. Azeez has a year left on his contract.

I remember City spending about £1m on both Akinbiyi and Thorpe as well as a Danish striker (Anderson?) for about £1/2m in the same window and that would have been mid 90’s? Our record is still little more than £300k over 30 years ago. Embarrassing.

I dont find it embarrassing. Would rather return to being a club that regular finds and sells on striking talent for millions then one that sp**nks millions on strikers and still stays in the same division!
Now we just need to get good at unearthing gems again

Now we just need to get good at unearthing gems again I agree. You just have to look at the additional interest in TV games we saw Lambert in the top flight and wearing an England shirt. Quansah or Anderson are now adding a little more interest in the top flight for some.

Would rather return to being a club that regular finds and sells on striking talent for millions then one that sp**nks millions on strikers and still stays in the same division! Now we just need to get good at unearthing gems again We unearthed a non-league gem in Barry Hayles and had to pay about £1/4m to sign him 25+ years ago. What would a modern day Barry Hayles cost us? Probably more than we’d be prepared to pay judging by our reluctance to not break what we were willing to pay for a centre back 30+ years ago. I doubt anyone wants us to frivolously spunk millions on strikers on a regular basis but to have not taken a gamble on even reaching £500k once over the course of 30+ years is imo embarrassing. Is there another club in the top 4 or 5 divisions with a longer standing transfer record than us? I don’t think it’s anything to be proud of. Just because a big fee gets paid for a player doesn’t mean you can’t still make a profit on that player.

Charlton spending £1m on a new striker - blimey. L1 gets tougher and tougher every season. They’ve just received c£750k from Brum for Alfie May (who only cost them c£250k a year earlier) meaning they had 3/4 of that ready to spend, so not all that surprising if they’re looking to go up this year.

He's had injury problems in the past and spent some of last season injured. So I didn't think he would for the criteria of players playing the majority of games for a number of years. If he regains his fitness he will be good at this level, but it would be a risk for that amount.

Ennis only joined Stoke at the end of January and signed a 2.5 year contract for his former manager at Plymouth. Why on earth would they want to get rid so soon and how on earth could we afford the fee and his championship wages?
