Had 36 games to turn Cheltenham around and failed to save them. Who can blame him for taking a job in our league with a big team who had just been beaten in the playoffs. All about the money I would suggest.

Great move. So happy he's finally getting a decent gig. Not sure what's surprising? Has done well in L1, almost got us promoted and has only ever been in League 1 with squads with poor budgets? Definitely a "time to prove yourself" move but confident he will. Left both us and Port Vale struggling near the bottom of L1. He did well for us in the first season back here, but apart from that, nothing which should excite a club who will expect nothing less than promotion. I wouldn't even want him back here Who knows how well he will do with a decent squad to start with and a decent budget none of which he had here, or I doubt at any of the others he managed in league 1. Hope it works out for him.

Oh wow, did not see that coming! Great opportunity for him. This is his real opportunity to manage at a higher level than L1/2 after turning down Leeds all those years ago.
Good luck to him!!

All about the money I would suggest. Probably the smallest team in the league and they had 0 points and 0 goals scored when he took over and they went into the final day with a chance of staying up? Remarkable even if it didn't happen.

Leeds wanted him when they had that mental owner that went through 50 managers. He was sensible not to pursue a move there. If Barnsley arent top 3 by Xmas he'll be gone cant see their fans jumping with ecstatic jubilation if he does get the job Having been to Barnsley on a number of occasions, believe me the only thing worth jumping for joy about is when you're on the train to Sheffield. Good luck Darrell. 💙

Great move. So happy he's finally getting a decent gig. Very surprised Barnsley would want Clarke as League 1 seems to be his ceiling limit and they will want promotion Not sure what's surprising? Has done well in L1, almost got us promoted and has only ever been in League 1 with squads with poor budgets? Definitely a "time to prove yourself" move but confident he will. When did DC ever almost get us promoted from L1, I can't recall him ever managing us whilst we were in the top 6, let alone almost get us promoted. It's a totally random appointment given that in recent seasons he's only ever managed teams at either the bottom of L1 or the top of L2. It'll be interesting to see how he gets on and also what Barnsley fans make of the appointment.

Maybe if Matty Taylor had not left and not been replaced adequately, he might have been in with a chance, but it didn't happen.

Why not just accept your wrong, no team ever gets promoted in December and once MT was sold and not adequately replaced we eventually finished 12th. Even with MT in the side we were only ever around 7th or 8th before he left. The only time in recent years we've ever looked serious promotion contenders was under GC, but that season also fizzled out once he jumped ship and was replaced by BG.

That’s close to being in contention for promotion.

Being close is not being in actual contention, nobody who watched us play that season thought we were in with a chance of promotion once MT departed. It'll be interesting to see how DC gets on as he needs to go from a manager who's never managed a side in the top 6 to really needing to be there all season.

Spot on. It is a great opportunity. But it’s also a bit of a defining appointment for him. After us, Walsall, Port Vale and Cheltenham this appointment with a club who will demand to be among the top six is very different from the others. This is his chance and he needs to take it. No smaller club achieving well above what they should be doing. Fail here and he will be limited to league 2 or lower league 1 jobs. Pressure will be on. Good luck to him. UTG!

Good luck to DC, I hope that it works out well for him. They’ll expect no more than promotion, so he’ll be under pressure from the start.
