Has anyone suggested Lee Carsley? Rob Dorsett from Sky says Carsley is on the FA’s list and he’s joint second favourite alongside Howe with SkyBet. Potter being favourite - would be typical of the FA to go with him because he’s unattached and not having to pay compensation!

Could step up as an interim manager for the Nations League matches this Autumn, giving longer for a permanent appointment.

Possible although didn’t Southgate get in as interim first before getting the job full-time? I don’t think he would be a good long term appointment so the FA would need to make clear it’s very much interim - IMO it would be unfair to place someone like Carsley in to the hot seat when he’s nowhere near ready for such a job.

What the FA will never do:
Wait and consider all their options. They have the option to put in place a decent caretaker/interim manager until effectively the end of the 2024/25 season. Depending on the draw England get, qualifying for the 2026 World Cup starts as late as Sept 2025 and at worst there are only two qualifiers before June 2025...
There must be a number of highly qualified managers who will become available in that window (for a variety of reasons) and some would probably like a crack at winning a World Cup with what is undoubtably a talented squad. Why rush to appoint the wrong person? Sound some out whilst they are busy winning other things and then give them 12 months to win the biggest tournament in the world...
