Would love to be a fly on the wall at half time and know what Southgate says to them

Impressed with the defence which I expected to be our downfall. The palace CB especially. Subs all required and did a job, but why Foden wasn’t taken off for Gordon or other option after about 60 mins I don’t know.

Guehi and Stones vs Vlahovic and Mitrovic 🤞 🙏 Guehi looked really good during the first half. 👏 Attachment Deleted

That was harder than it should have been, but only our second opening match win in something like 10 games if I heard the commentary right. I kept hearing this but from what I remember: WC 22: 6-2 Iran Euros 20/21: 1-0 Croatia WC 18: 2-1 Tunisia Euros 16: 1-1 Russia WC 14: Uruguay L (not sure on score) That’s as far back as I remember. Unless they were speaking about euros only?

Southgate’s won all of his first matches in major tournaments. We won We scored a great goal We kept a clean sheet They only had one shot on goal. I think it was a decent start against the best opponent we’ll face in the group. I fancy us to top the group with 7 or 9 points now which would be massive because if we came 2nd we’d probably face Germany in the last 16 and it would be early to be playing them.

Every great team needs unsung heroes who just get stuck in when the going gets tough and inspires those around them to “ man up “ to use an old expression that will probably cause offence . Not sure England have one

Stevie G and Lamps revisited, Foden cannot play on the left get Gordon there, and bring Foden on for Bellingham on 60 minutes, to keep them both fresh.
Get Coooooole palmer on for Saka too on 70 minutes.

I thought we would see Cole Palmer last night, though Saka did well. Interesting that the BBC (and possibly other media) is already running a piece on how to get the best out of Foden, though I didn't think he did too badly last night.

Foden was isolated and had little support from Trippier who had no condifence to drive to the line and use his left foot. As a result Foden had little useful service to make runs into and around the box and his involvement became limited to little passing triangles which eventually went square or backwards.
The left handside is a major hole in this squad.

Fitness permitting, we definitely need Shaw at LB as soon as possible to give us some better balance on that left wing. Foden drifting inside would suddenly make a lot more sense then.
Personally not 100% sure how I feel about TAA in CM yet. Obviously the upside is that you have a player in the middle with an outrageous range of passing and the ability to pick the lock of a tight defence. But you undoubtedly get some downsides off the ball. Interested to see him there again vs. Denmark.
Guehi was brilliant. Stones rusty but understandable. Rice quiet but did what was needed in the middle. Jude the best player on the pitch.
Overall not thrilling, but three points against a tricky opponent in your opening game isn’t to be sniffed at. Only clean sheet of the tournament so far. Plenty of positives to build on and things to be improved upon too.
We go again 🏴

Get Coooooole palmer on for Saka too on 70 minutes. Gerrard and Lampard was an issue because we were rigidly sticking to 4-4-2 back then. They would have worked well in a more modern 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 - Mourinho wanted to link them at Chelsea and he’d have made it work with the system they were playing at the time. IMO Foden should play at 10 with Bellingham a bit deeper as a box to box No.8. He’s an amazing athlete and that position is where he played most for Dortmund. Real Madrid needed to play him as a No.10 this season but that doesn’t mean he has to play the same role for England. Foden is a generational talent and I can see him being wasted by the current management which would be shameful.

Was it brilliant? No, far from it but we won and that’s the most important thing right now. With the other game ending in a draw you could say it’s the perfect start.
Lots of positives to take though. First 90 minutes for Stones in a long time. Saka also still getting his sharpness back after injury at the end of the season. Guehi was excellent. After watching the Denmark game earlier I would still put money on Serbia also making it through the group.

Good game but as expected. Serbia were decent but we had them in our pockets all 1st half and not surprisingly they worked us out 2nd half and kept a good hand in game. A few scary moments but never really a threat. I’d say we deservedly looked like favourites!

I was thinking last night during the anthems, when did England last sing God Save The King at a major international tournament?

A few scary moments but never really a threat. I’d say we deservedly looked like favourites! It was job done but typical park the Southgate bus and defend a 1-0 lead. Let’s hope we are improved as the tournament goes on as that certainly wasn’t a final, semi final or quarter final display. Foden surprisingly looked poor yesterday but we know he is a class player and need him firing for sure.
